Totally concur. I've had my FGX5 for a little over 3 years now and it just gets better. My biggest dilemma was/is what strings to use. So far I've been happy with D'Addario XS 12's.

For the price, the FS3 is probably the best playing and sounding guitar under 1k. Sure, the 5 is a little better, but I just picked up an FS3 for 800 new and it's fantastic. 85% of the guitar at half the price. Snappy, loud, light and airy as any guitar I have ever played, and warm. It's a cannon. I have already written an original song using it.

@@09.hoangminhhai74 you can't go wrong with either but I'd go with the FGX5. The fit and finish is so good. Also, it comes with a hard case. Since it's made in Japan opposed to China, it'll probably hold its value better.

Great review guys! I own a few of the older Yamaha guitars, an FG180 from the late '60's, and a hand made FG-1000J from the mid '70's and a 1978 FG375S. They are all fabulous guitars and I cherish them. When I was able to get my hands on an FGX5, I pulled the trigger pretty fast! Incredible guitar and, like all my Yamaha's, great value for money. My daughter really likes playing my guitars and I let her play them but the dreads are all kinda big for her so I found her an FSX3. She loves it. So do I! Sure, it's made in China at a Yamaha factory with great QC. You can tell by handling it that Yamaha takes great care in the fabrication of their guitars at their Chinese facility. Does it sound as good as the luthier built Japanese one? No. Does it feel just as good to hold and play? Almost, but not quite. Is it great value for money? Absoluely! Is it better than most guitars in its price range? Yes. The whole Red Label series is awesome and the biggest bang for the buck in all checkboxes except snob appeal.

I wrestled between a Martin Road Series 12 as well as the Taylor 327e. Played with the 327e for a good month and it wasn't for me. The Martin 12 just didn't seem as an instrument I would personally like to spend a lot of time with. They are both great guitars. I haven't even gotten a chance to play the FGX5. As I was waiting for the Martin I decided to pick up the FGX3 to see what it was like. I fought the feeling of really enjoying it because I thought to myself, "who goes to get a high end guitar and ends up with a Yamaha?" Well... I did. Here's why I love it. 1. It's built tough. Feels like it can take a hit. The 327e felt very thin and I was concerned I would crack it. 2. Plays very well. The playability is not as easy as Taylor but smoother than the Martin Road Series. 3. The base and mids and highs are balanced. 4. The pick up system can be dialed in to my liking easy. 5. The sustainabilty and action is just right for me.....And I didn't even have an FGX5 to try which it is said that the action is lower and sustainability is stronger. I'm super happy with it. And I appreciate you guys at the Acoustic Letter for your reviews. Thank you!

Nothing but respect and admiration for Yamaha acoustic guitars despite owning high end Martin's and Taylor's. My Dad played the same early 70's FG 180 for over 40 yrs as an local bluegrass/country musician. Fret board needs to be replaced but still have it tucked away purely out of affection for Yamaha. Most of the guitar players in my family and friend circles have owned a Yamaha acoustic at some point. They simply work without breaking your budget

I have a 2019 FGX3. I put a bone saddle and ebony pins in it, left nut stock. The more playing time I put on this guitar, the warmer and resonant it gets. I am on about my 10th strings change now, have used it for several recordings and am very happy with it. I bought it new in Canada and consider myself lucky to get one. If you can find one, highly recommend it. The Yamaha LL16 models are amazing as well. I have many acoustic guitars (some high end some el cheapos) and these Yamaha’s are top notch.

Just added horn pins. Great bass and sustains like crazy. It is a dreadnaught. Already had a G&G case. I also have an LL16D. It is a jumbo and wider than the FG3. Swapped for a Tusq nut and saddle. Added bone pins, bought a Yamaha hard case. The FG is Sitka over sipo mahogany. The LL16D is englemann over EI rosewood. The tones are totally different. The difference between the 3 and the 5 is that the 3 is line made in their Chinese factory (high quality, for sure), while the 5 is handmade in their custom shop in Japan by 1 luthier from start to finish who hand selects the best woods. Aside from that, they are essentially the same, as you've mentioned. I own the 5 and it's absolutely fantastic in every way. Really great setup right out of the box too.

@@vespass225 this person is just inaccurate. I don't know where this person is getting their information from, but this is simply untrue, and can be verified by just every press release and demo regarding this guitar made by Yamaha. I doubt highly that a company that has been making quality instruments since the 1960's would tarnish their reputation by lying about it. They don't claim that the wood is from Japan, so regarding that, who knows. But other than that, I wouldn't put much stock in what this person is saying just because they are Japanese. That's like saying I have the inside scoop on Taylor guitars just because I'm American. 🙄

It’s a luthier and at least 12 apprentices, first choice in wood goes to Japan, bone nut and saddle, wood look pick guard, and more human time in Japan, compared to automations, more time on the finish to prevent clouding, and better initial setup. Hard case. Both solid woods. Both Great.

It's by far my favorite of all of them. And it's the only one of all of them that has inspired me to actually play more. The HD-28 I have is definitely louder but sounds very muddy and kind of dead even with new strings. And it just feels stiff to play even with light strings. The other is the low end of the Japanese factory, made by people with the least experience. I think my FGX5 was made by a summer student 😂, currently waiting on the replacement under warranty. I'm hoping I'll get used to it (my two other guitars have pretty thick necks though) because I would like to hang on to this beauty. You barely pick,/strum and it sings all the way up the fretboard.
@joeblough261
@joeblough261 4 жыл бұрын
Hey there, would you mind explaining more? Wouldn't a slim neck profile actually make for easier playing? (Or obviously not per your comment).
@jackaro2
@jackaro2 4 жыл бұрын
@@joeblough261 Slimmer definitely can make it easier but I've gotten so used to thicker C shaped neck that it's not the case for me, especially when playing open position. It's like I don't have enough leverage to fret the strings so I have to squeeze more than I'm used to and my hand would cramp up after about 20 min of playing. I probably could've gotten used to it in time but ended up selling it... but I kinda regret it because it is a great guitar.

Interesting, thx so much for the reply. This is what makes buying a guitar online difficult...you can read all the specs on paper but you really need to hold it and play it in hand. But everytime I go to a guitar store to try a certain axe I see online, they don't have any of them. In this case I usually play a Simon & Patrick with a pretty slim neck and it works great for me, so maybe this would be the same....

@@joeblough261 I've been reading up on neck profiles. It helped me understand why I'm not thrilled when playing my Martin DRSG (road series) with the "performing artist" neck shape (not talking about the taper) vs other guitars that have a "modified low oval," that I do like. I agree that you won't know how it feels until you hold it. Martin has a page on their website with cross-section views and explanations.

I'm sure the model from Japan will be much lighter. Yamaha always give you the best value for the money regardless of the level of quality. A good balance across the strings without any over powering sounds, and made by hand. Be it a Yamaha motorcycle, outboard motor - drum sets, etc.

60 years of playing both professionally and in a studio and having owned no less then 8 top Martins and 3 Taylors and a few Breedlove's I strongly do feel that Yamaha has surpassed them in build quality, playability AND tonal balance. The LL and FG's out of Yamaha are so dang loud, warm and rich......consistently. NON of the other manufacturers are there. Only the boutique builders can equal them in all regard. Martin's in particular have really fallen off in their workmanship and consistency. Taylor's may play well but to me are weak.

These are not intermediate guitars.... I like him better than a factory Martin D28... let's just crazy talk if you try to downplay them to be anything less than pro guitars.... And if you get one with the electronics, they're high the as well. Best to try to get your hands on The specific one you want to buy if possible.... Just replace at least the saddle on the model 3's with compensated bone... Which is crazy easy and cheap to do these days. You can find 3's that are just as resonant as the 5's.... You can't find a five with a slightly less desirable soundboard.... But have yet to hear one that isn't at least very good.... Just a matter of degrees. All wood is different. It's total b******* if anybody claims that these are not pro guitars! And if you get one with the electronics
