The club has absolutely nothing to do with that area. The heli-ski outfit is a foreign owned capital company that would privatize the back country and lock out sledders if they could. And there's a good change the guide isn't from anywhere around here either.
@brettgregg3103Күн бұрын
I sled in BC, and I've done a fair bit of sled access skiing, so I enjoy both sports. The problem with Heli-Skiers is their culture of entitlement dating back to the late 60's. They actually think they own the mountains. It is 100% public land and unless they actually own the land (they don't), they can't kick you off, report you for tresspassing, or harass you. There are a few anomalies to this, one being Island Lake Lodge near Fernie, where a group of Skiers/snowboarders purchased the land from Shell Oil +30 years ago. Therefore it is private land. -Heli Skiers can drop pretty much anywhere, where sledders are extremely limited to where they can ride. -Heli Skiers are typically not Canadian, they are ultra wealthy Americans or Europeans. -Helis are louder and produce more emissions than snowmobilers -Heli Skiers (as Matt says), do not contribute to the local economy like a sledder or even resort skiers would. -A Heli Operation's License of Occupation will give them access (tenure) as the exclusive Heli operation to use that mountain. Same as a hunting outfitter given a LOO (exclusive zone) to guide on land that prohibits all other outfitters from guiding on. A L.O.O. does not ban motorized access like an environmental closure does, typically the only License of Occupation that can ban sleds are ski resorts (which makes sense). Pretty messed up a Heli can drop Euro Tourists on mountains with environmental closures, and they are completely closed for sledding for Canadians.

Heli skiers think they own Blue River too. They can take their money and shove it. Thats public land. I’m born and raised in BC’s interior and i am sick and tired of the rich and wealthy thinking they can take over the recreational areas of this province. From sledding to hunting, the deep breathers and rich and wealthy continue to take more and more from the rest of us. It would have been a much different situation for that guide if the crew i ride with were there. Keep it up Matt, the comments on this video are stacked with support. @JoeBoyle-pe5mwКүн бұрын
Well, lots of private industry profits of public land, like logging, so that’s a red herring. Ski something the sleds can’t ride? That’s getting increasingly harder and harder. You see the terrain you can get a turbo 165” up? Just “rich people”? What about locals out ski touring? Dude, powder is increasingly becoming a coveted resource. Everybody wants it, and there’s more and more riders (sledders, skiers, snowboarders) looking for first tracks. If all riders don’t learn to get along and everybody respecting everybody else’s rights to enjoy public land, land managers are going to get involved and you’re going to see more and more closures. Heli ski ops bring a lot of money and jobs to areas and have a LOT of political clout. They make better friends than enemies.

@JoeBoyle-pe5mw ive seen designated heli ski areas before when sledding. They had signs up and everyone respected the area. If it's dual use then it's first come first serve. We go to radium all the time and there's tons of ski and snowboarders that ghost ride their sleds down the hill. We always leave them be until they've tracked up their spot and moved on and then we'll go ride it once they're done. That guy was pretty rude so getting along has to go both ways. Also there's hardly any sledders out there yet so can't tell me everything is all tracked out on the first day of a 3 foot reset.

There’s been a lot of discussion about the interaction involving a heliski guide, but it’s important to consider a key detail: a drone was in the air while a Bell 212 helicopter was operating nearby and approaching a pickup location. Drones pose a significant safety risk to traditional aircraft, especially in these scenarios. This is a critical aviation safety concern that pilots and guides must address. It’s likely the guide was communicating the situation to the pilot, who may have been understandably alarmed. That said, while the guide’s response could have been more measured, it’s a reminder of the importance of clear and respectful communication in high-risk situations like this. A calm explanation of the safety risks would have been more effective. This isn’t meant as criticism of anyone involved, but rather as an opportunity to understand the broader context and the risks associated with drones and aviation. These incidents highlight the need for continued education and awareness about the safe use of drones in areas where aircraft are operating.
