What a beautiful, rugged piece of country. My old legs cringe at the thought of trying to navigate all those rocks. Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us. I will be waiting for the coffee table book of old cabins, by Professor Muskrat Thomas. Many blessings to you my friend. PB

Good morning Gary. That river looked the same to Lewis & Clarke as it does today. The land doesn't change that mucover time. Putting together a picture book of all those lovely homesteads is a great idea. Have a nice day.

My oldest brother ran hounds all over in the late 70's and the Salmon River was one of his places to catch a cat or a bear. His last elk came from someplace down on the Salmon River. A cold wet night in the rain nearly killed him. Covid pneumonia got him the next fall. I get blown away every time I run down the Lochsa for the same reasons. Lewis and Clark were probably wondering what they were thinking there too. There is a great story about the "Carlin Party", a group of hunters that went up the Lochsa in 1893. I have a book about it and should read it again.

Lewis and Clark were following an Indian trail that went through the mountains just north of the Lochsa River.

Good Morning Muskrat, checking out those cabins would be fun, wonder why they don't keep at least some of them up ? And those roads should be fixed and kept usable, isn't that part of Forrest management? In Oregon I saw a lot of roads closed on the Forrest service allotments. I really like your cover on your truck. Have a Great Day. God Bless America and Trump. 😊

Beautiful country. Rugged isn’t the right word. Around here there are cabins in the woods but most structures from the past have rotted away or been consumed by the forest. Pretty lucky to get to see these. Enjoy the day 👍👍

I'd have to resort to some book learnin' to be a hunnert percent on Lewis & Clark's trip through there. I'm old, but I ain't THAT old! I do believe though, that by the time they got to that point, they'd explored the Yellerstone country, dropped into the Lemhi country, wintered up with the Shoshone and Sacajewa's folks, who set 'em up with horses, a shaky guide, and instead of sendin' em south to the Snake, pushed em off into country what shoulda eat 'em up an spit 'em out! Again, though, they ended up eatin' the livestock, starvin', and dependin' on the kindliness of the Nez Perce on the other end. Sorry, dependin' on my mem'ry, well, things is a mite tangled an fuzzy, but that's why them Boys kept good journals. Read 'em!! Good stuff!! Thanks fer the road trip, Sir! Beats hell outta where I been all weekend. Take er easy!

I've tracked and killed three mountain lions over 20 years, just me, no dogs. There's nothing more rewarding as a hunter. That being said, hounds are still the most effective means of management, and I have nothing against hound hunters. All hunters need to stick together as our numbers dwindle.

Another nice drive! Man, that road must've been quite an undertaking to get built. That book you mentioned would be great. I sure wish i would've thought about that when i lived over on the Montana side just East of you. Back then there still were quite a lot of those old cabins scattered around. I did take a picture of a few. I don't even have the pictures anymore.

Happy MLK/Inauguration Day. Lewis and Clark went over Lost Trail Pass eventually then down the Bitterroot Valley to the Lolo Pass I believe. It's been many years since I looked at the map. That route took them past what is now the Chief Joseph Ranch at Darby, MT. This is the ranch seen on the TV show Yellowstone. Never watched the show myself. Thanks for the drive down the Salmon. I might drive that road this summer.

Afternoon !!! I remember a documentary where they said Lewis & Clark hired an indian guide to cross the Bitterroot Mountains, I think that's correct. The indian said 14 day's to cross & in the end took 54 day's. They called them the most inhospitable mountain's they had encountered. That was going into Idaho as the narrator stated. 6 degrees this morning. Only had couple dusting of snow. 2inches last week. Still not as bad as last Jan the 15th. We hit -10 below. 12 inches of snow & then a lot ice. For a week.
@howmanable10 сағат бұрын
Lewis and Clark took only 11 days to cross the Bitterroot Mountains.

@howmanable interesting! I remember the narrator saying that it took 54 days to cross a mountain range. I have cousin in Salmon that taught school there. Wrote a book titled ," Joined by a Journey", by Mike Crosby. Big Lewis & Clark historian. Thank you for your reply!😅

@ they were in poor shape crossing the Bitterroots in 11 days. 54 days they might have starved.

Lewis and Clark two leaders commissioned to find the NW water way passage to the pacific. I often wonder how many times on the climb to two ocean pass did they ask each other this one simple question. What engineering genius thought that a boat navigation up the Missouri, turn into the Colombia for easy 🤔 shipping route? Oh oh I get it now, there was an entire firm of engineers involved. That explains everything 😂😅 only an engineer would try n get 💧 to flow up hill. By the way isn't it odd one was named Meriwether? Too close to fair weather. Oh Merry Weather Lewis and Summerville Clark 😮 two men in search of perpetual mild climate. Equal chance of discovery 😅😂. Sorry a day after 🧊 🐟 at -1 has me rendered 🤪 n funny haha this 🌄. Oh and 👀 the brilliance of educated engineering in my past. Just felt like hacking on them. Mountain man
