After the recent attack in San Bernardino, California, US presidential frontrunner Donald Trump called for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."
Despite an outcry from some against the proposed ban, the US has seen a wave of Islamophobic incidents, leaving many Muslim-American communities under added scrutiny.
But outside of these attacks, what are the issues facing Muslim Americans? Is there something distinct that can be called "American Islam"? And do Muslims in the US see a clash between the country's liberal values and traditional religious belief?
In this web special, Linda Sarsour, an activist and executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, and leading Muslim scholar Yasir Qadhi discuss the key issues facing Muslim Americans today.
Editor's note: This Arena was recorded prior to US presidential frontrunner Donald Trump's calls to ban Muslims from entering the US and the attack in San Bernardino.

Mehdi kept interrupting Yasir while he gave Linda free reign over her liberal/humanist wishy washy opinion. Also as a Palestinian she’ll raise her voice over the injustices being done to the Palestinians (rightly so) but everyone else should forget about issues in Iraq, Pakistan and Syria. On the question of "Who speaks for Islam?" Main stream Islam is derived from the Quran and the life of the Prophet. So anyone who's not muslim and has question should look to the Quran and the life of the messenger. There may be slight difference of opinions between people but the Quran is the same everywhere unlike the Bible, so that should help with getting authentic, undisputed and original information for learning about what Islam says about a particular subject.

I’m not a politician but what certainly know and believe in and it is clear in our religion Islam is that there is no separation of church and state like Christians. You see, in Islam God have you complete guidance on all aspects of life. Islam is real that God ‘Allah’ is above absolutely everything. In Islam the state makes laws that are compatible with God’s will, compatible with the Quran and sunnah. God’s will is for humanity sake and well being. People who are raised on secular values need to study Islam to really understand what it is. The talk in this interview “”appears to me” is based on western man made laws and values for the most part rather than on Islam.

Dear Al Jazeera Author, thank for the debate. Could you once present Speaks or Discussion a Scholar Muslim/Dai from Indonesia, the biggest Muslim country in the world, bigger than all Arabian country population. Such Ust. Abdul Somad Lc MA or Ust Adi Hidayat Lc MA. Cause most of speakers came from Arab Scholar, even that was in USA, like Nouman Khan which tend to Saudis Hanbali madzab perspective. It is good get the perspective from Syafii Madzab which mostly follow by Asean Country.

Couldn't they find someone who is rather, connectable. Who's opinion the people would accept. Someone with neutral and literate views. Maybe sister Yasmin or Amal. They are more aware on this topic as they interact with the youth and the mass. Or a sister who's a scholar.

The question is always aggressively subverted, when you ask people who follow Islam anything about their religion! The question was , is there a brand of American Islam . Neither really wanted to answer this , but preferred to preach and describe what their faith means and why it should be listens too! Why do people that follow Islam always see Islam, as a global identity first instead of putting their own country first , before their faith . Integration and inclusion should be their goal They need to stop telling people what everyone should except about their faith , without any tolerance, or expectance of any other values, or life styles .

I am from India, We have suffered for the last 1400 years in the hands of invaders like Arab, Turks, Mongols, Iranian etc. They partitioned my country with the help of the British upper class. During the time of the partition, millions were killed and millions were expelled from their home. If the white British allow these Pakistanis to grow and grow, in 100 years time, they will demand a separate country for themselves from which the white British will be expelled or killed.

Respect is a two way street. You come into OUR country and impose your ways on us. We like our ways. We like our pork, our beer and our dogs. WE allow our women to show their facesitin public. Your ways of ignorance are not welcome here. WE like speaking our minds.. calling a spade a spade. WE like our civilizatioin. which is second to none. Don't impose your sharia on us. WE are not obligated to obey Ramamadam. WE can eat a ham sandwich at high noon in Ramadam without any guilt. Your moongod has no sway over us. Sharia is man made law. It is not divine. OUr Common law is. GEt it?

May peace and blessings be upon you. Sir, you are absolutely correct in saying that respect is a two way street. In fact, Islam respects the right of people to choose who and what they believe in. Our holy book The Qur'an states: {Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error…} (Al-Baqarah 2:256) Therefore, one who is truly practicing Islam will respect everyone's rights to practice their faith as they please. So eat your pork sandwich, and practice your beliefs in the way you prefer. No good Muslim will try to 'force Shari' ah' on you. Further, we do not follow a 'moongod', our Islamic calendar is simply based on the phases of the moon where each month begins and ends with a full moon. And Allah (God) knows best.

Islam is not only a spiritual/religious doctrine, highly prescriptive socially, behavior and judicially. All encompassing and has become inflexible, as manifest in many places where it prevails in the modern world.

B Saver A glimpse at the subject of Women in Islam: I must state that this whole "Oppress Women" thing is not Islamic. Nor are they 2nd class. There are many proofs for this. 1) The Prophet Mohammed's first Wife, Khadija, was his BOSS. HE used to WORK FOR HER. She was his EMPLOYER. 2) BEFORE ISLAM, men used to Marry many, MANY WIVES, MISTREAT them, DISRESPECT them, and they could divorce them whenever. The WIFE had to COMPLY with everything her husband told her and COULDN'T REFUSE or DIVORCE. That was BEFORE ISLAM. HOWEVER, ISLAM put LIMITS on POLYGAMY, gave women DIGNITY, RESPECT, and made them TREATED PROPERLY. Women were given the RIGHT to DIVORCE. Women were also supposed to consent in marriage, as the MARRIAGE ISN'T COMPLETE without the BRIDE ACCEPTING. And either way, Muslim men have a financial responsibility for each wife, so if he decides to marry multiple wives, he would never stop working. That's why 1 wife is recommended. But there's nothing wrong with marrying more as long as it's within the limit of 4. 3) Women are NOT to be BEATEN according to Islam. The bigots and radicals pick out verse 4:34, and say it allows them to beat their wives. However, they are wrong. That verse says if you fear that your wife is CHEATING, you must ask her to stop. If she persists, you must not sleep in her bed. If you catch her cheating, the worst you can do is TAP HER in a way DOESN'T HURT, people mistranslate this as "Beat" even though it says TAP LIGHTLY (with a toothbrush according to scholars), and that is permissible only AFTER the PREVIOUS TWO didn't work. The verse starts off saying to protect/preserve them. 4) BEFORE ISLAM, men used to consider having DAUGHTERS and no sons as an EMBARRASSMENT. They used to BURY their NEWBORN DAUGHTERS in hope that the "gods would grant them a son". ISLAM STOPPED THIS. Surah 81 was revealed in order to put an end to this. In fact, the Prophet Mohammed only had daughters and no sons. I suggest you read SURAH 81, with this piece of knowledge. (It's not a long Surah) 5) Mohammed's Wives and other WOMEN RODE their own CAMELS in the same land where Women can't drive today. 6) Before you bring up the inheritance difference, you might as well know that in Islam, women have more monetary freedom than men. Men are limited in their spending, as they have to spend on the family. Women can use their own money on whatever they want. (Ask any man which deal he would rather have, they'd want the woman's deal) 7) The reason why 2 women are required in the place of 1 man during a property case is because we burden our wives and mothers so many responsibilities, and being a witness is a huge responsibility. We wish to not burden them so that they may enjoy. And yes, it's a burden, as jury duty is a burden. People often then bring a Hadith, claiming that it says that women are defective in intellect and religion, when all it says is that they have a DECREASED RESPONSIBILITY. The Word Naqis means that the woman has a decreased responsibility. And, even here, women get the better deal. 8) Women are NOT to get punished for being raped The rapist is to be punished while the victim is to be given money by the government. In fact, 4 witnesses aren't even required for rape cases. Rape is never excused, according to Islam. 9) In Islam, Concubinage requires consent of the concubine. Rape of a concubine automatically makes her free, and gets the rapist punished. Also, children of concubines are considered legitimate, and set the concubine automatically free, even if stillborn. Either way, it doesn't really exist to that degree today. 10) The Prophet Mohammed had more wives due to sociopolitical reasons. Usually they were to end conflicts. Also, he only had one recorded concubine, though some sources include her as a wife. Again, this was okay, and there was nothing wrong with it. This mistreatment of Women is due to people mixing their Pre-Islamic culture with Islam, the BLAME belongs to the CULTURE, NOT the RELIGION. Also good to know: at a time when people followed Sharia Law, the FIRST degree-granting UNIVERSITY was FOUNDED in Morocco BY a MUSLIM WOMAN at 859. STUDENTS of this university INCLUDED many Muslims, but also included the JEWISH Philosopher Maimonodes, POPE Sylvester II, as well as many other non-Muslims. As the Prophet Mohammed said, "women are the twins of men"
