I mean i knew we say alaikum because a jew said “as saamu alaikum” (may death be upon you) that to the Prophet (pbuh) but i didn’t realize the practicality of the “wa alaikum” in that it was to protect the muslims because the jews or christian could disguise their “As-Salamu alaikum” (may peace be upon u) by saying “As-Saamu alaikum” (May death be upon you). As for good measure The Prophet (pbuh) instructed the Sahaba (RA) to just say “Wa alaikum” (And upon you as well) just in case.
