The two Chamic languages formed the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian family. They were one among several ethnic groups in Hainan. Many Chams over the years intermarried with the locals and Hans. Ethnic Chams are of Malay-Polynesian origins. They looked like present day Cambodians or Malaysian in features. The Chams are indigenous people of today's Central to Southern Vietnam. Since the 17th century CE, Champa became an Islamic Sultanate. Today, the Cham people are largely Muslim. Many Muslim Cham from Vietnam fled to Malaysia as refugees in recent time. Historical facts - Champa kingdom was invaded and somewhat destroyed by Vietnam in 1471. What is now central and southern Vietnam was finally annexed by Vietnamese King- Minh Mạng in 1832. Unfortunately the original Chams are treated like 2nd class citizens in their own land and ostracized by the Vietnamese today.

In China, all Han ethnic groups or those that are related to Han but are Muslim are called Hui, unlike the Uighurs, their Turkic group is not related to Han, so Uighurs are not called Hui. The Cham ethnic group still looks similar to the Han ethnic group, so sometimes they are assimilated as the Hui ethnic group, in fact the Cham are still Malays, both of whom are seafaring people. In the past, the South China Sea was called the Champa Sea
