Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu, who lived during the Eiroku era (1558-1570), founded the Eishin Ryū lineage of swordsmanship. Jinsuke wanted to defeat his late father’s murderer and decided to go and pray the Hayashizaki Myōjin deity. There, he became enlightened with the secrets of Iai (sword drawing) and thus named his style Hayashizaki Musō Ryū (also known as the Shigenobu Ryū). Jinsuke eventually managed to avenge his father. After him, the school spread into many branches. The 7th Headmaster Hasegawa Chikaranosuke Hidenobu blended his own techniques with the old ones and created a very precise and efficient style that would become known as the Hasegawa Eishin Ryu (“Hidenobu” can also be read “Eishin”) or Musō Jikiden Eishin Ryū.
During the 2nd year of Enpō (1674), the 9th Headmaster Hayashi Rokudayū Yasumasa started to disseminate Eishin Ryū in the Tosa domain (modern Kochi Prefecture) where he served. Since then, the school became the official and exclusive style of Tosa, where it would be preserved and passed down for many generations.
The 17th Headmaster Ōe Masaji Shikei was concerned by the decline of martial arts in Japan and decided to spread Eishin Ryū all over the country. The 18th Headmaster Yamauchi Toyotake, who was a relative of the Tosa lords, published a book entitled “Iai Shōsetsu” (Auspicious Theory of Iai). The 19th Headmaster Kōno Kanemitsu founded the Meibukan Dojo in the Toshima area of Tokyo. The 20th Headmaster Onoue masami inherited the dojo and then handed it down to the 21st and current Headmaster Sekiguchi Takaaki.
