I came here because a commentator on Järvi's rendition said this one is even wilder. It's true! If it's true that Mussorgsky threw all concepts of structure to the winds - which I can't really judge - then I love him for it!

For me too original version and arrangement by Modest is the best

It says something that Maestro Abbado preferred Mussorgsky's original to Rimsky-Korsakov's arrangement of this tone poem. This may seem more chaotic--but who's to say that wasn't Modest's intent?

Basically no relation to the exciting version we have been listening to for, in my case , some 60 years. This sketchy version lacks the spooky and eerie atmospherics and lyricism of the established version which I could hum note for note. I couldn't discern the semblance of a tune in this video. I am glad this attempt was evidently discarded by , I assume, the composer.

This was a version that was written by the composure and “discarded’” . It must be an interesting story.

This is the original work by Mussorskji, not a ‘discarded’ version. The one you are used to is the rearrangement made by Rimskji Korsakov after M. death.

@@luigiquartucci5844 In that case, kudos to Korsakov . I think he rescued the piece from imminent mediocrity, in my opinion.
