This week, I’ve got a video for you on morning routines. Check it out to see my classroom and how I run my own morning routine, but if you can’t watch right now I’ve got a quick recap below!
The goal of my morning routine is to help my kids focus, stay calm, and get a chance to work on something simple. This allows me to greet them, take attendance and lunch count, as well as to handle any issues or questions that may come up. So here’s my routine:
Line Up
We line up in the hallway outside my classroom when students arrive, until the bell rings at 8:50.
Morning Greeting
My morning greeting is an individual time with each student. They have a choice to give me a high five, hug or thumbs up. They tell me their preference each day, and it gives them a nice range of options for those who don’t like to be touched all the way to my big huggers. My kids are 6, so a lot of them love to give hugs, but you can change the options based on the age of your students.
Unpack
My students put their communication folder in a central bin for me to review, and then they unpack coats and backpacks in their cubbies.
Morning Work
Their morning work is usually ready at their seat, so they take down their chair and start working on it. I really love morning work that is simple enough that I don’t have to help too much, but still gives them a good review. Choice
When they finish their morning work, they turn it in at the turn-in spot and they have two choices: they can read an on-level book from their book baggie, or they can journal.
I have found that this routine allows the kids to stay calm and get focused, and they have a chance to make smart choices to start the day right. At our school we also have morning announcements during this time, so they listen to those while they work.
For me, I love getting to give each kid an individual greeting and once I’m done greeting, I use the time to take attendance. I know some teachers use a chart or other system where the students report their lunch preference or pick up situation. Personally, I’ve found it’s just easier to ask them and count it myself.
Our morning routine takes about half an hour, and it’s one of the many routines that make my days run smoothly. What does your morning routine look like? What are some of your favorite activities for morning work?

Having a structured morning routine is a life saver. I love your way of greeting the children as they come in the morning. Some children just need to know that someone loves them.

My kinders come in between 7:10 and 7:30 when the bell rings. No way I can keep them in the hallway. Plus they eat breakfast in the classroom.

I like the look of that morning work sheet too. Where can I find it please? Your morning routine is very similar to mine. It stops them just milling around when they have a task to get started straight away. And a fast finishers routine too. Love it!
