These are some great suggestions. It is a good idea if you can, to set your sound system up in a temporary fashion and give it a test run before committing to cutting drywall. Also pulling cable through walls and attics can be very difficult and frustrating. Look at some of the cable pulling tools (there are many) like fish tape and fiberglass rods that are available to make this job a little easier. One tip I have is if you are running wire straight down (or up) try using a weighted string or length of jack chain to drop through the top hole. The weight of the chain will cause it to drop straight down to the hole below.

Banana plugs? Blech. Speakon is the way to go these days. I use them instead of banana plugs wherever I can, including wall outlets that are carrying or distributing any speaker level signal.

I know you haven’t gotten to all the accessories yet, but having an HDMI switch on the rack may help depending on if you want the other TVs to use items like a 4K Blu-Ray player or NAS. Also, signal through CAT5 begins to degrade after 100m. This is a long distance, but running CAT5 through walls, across floor joists, and back down walls can add up.

Hit JL Audio up for a couple of Fathoms! They owe you! Great videos Mark, appreciate the work you put into them! I also like the departure into home audio! It’s the natural transition from car audio! Cheers to you and your family!

Some devices use Bluetooth rather than IR sensors. Is there an option for Bluetooth extending to another room? I'm thinking of placing my rack outside the media room. Thanks
@davidreed9046Ай бұрын
I prefer Bluetooth remotes as they work outside of other rooms and don’t have to be pointed directly at any device. I was going to mention this route for the build. Thanks for mentioning this topic.

Really nice stuff as always but since you asked if anything else might be needed I would add a video balun. I found it works better to run the cat6 or higher than to run a long length of hdmi. Hope things go well for you Slick

I know it's nit picking, but I wouldn't really call these accessories, but pretty much types of essential gear to interconnect everything together depending on what AV equipment you have chosen. I would consider accessories to be more like home theater signage, fancy accent lighting, posters and frames, popcorn machines, ice makers, ticket booths, pool tables, not just must-have acoustic treatments but acoustic wall art, etc.

Yep, I just installed front height speakers today and totally forgot to order banana connectors. They're not necessary, but they make life a lot easier when you go to EQ the system and only want a single or a pair of speakers firing at a time. Luckily I remembered the bananas while running errands today and I was close by a Lows store, they had them in stock so I grabbed a pack. Just finished watching Pacific Rim and just as I suspected, this is way better than 5.1 surround sound, way way better! Cheers 🍻.

I used Keystone plates when I did my home network in my old place. I found some 6 port ones, and network rack panels. Wire molding is great for hiding wires.

Getting a good universal remote like the Logitech harmony system is a big help that most people don’t think of. Condensing everything into one remote as well as giving the ability to control smart lighting as well. Using a remote like this can actually eliminate a couple of the things in your video like the 12v triggers because it will power on and off most system components for you. As well as the IR repeater because most good universal remotes work over an RF frequency to the hub and then the hub sends the IR to the components.
@TheBrokenLife3 жыл бұрын
Most stand-alone amplifiers don't have remote controls, so you need the 12v trigger wire regardless. It's exactly like car audio where your remote wire tells your amps to turn on.

Hey Mark, I had a couple quick questions, completely off topic of course, I just couldn't find an answer to. Whether or not you answer, I thumbs-ed up, curved arrow-ed, and subscription button thingy-ed. This is the third time I had a question and thought of ya, and "Mark Stereo Dude" isn't the best query to find ya efficiently 😎. I think all that jazz helps ya out too, so win-win. Why do some car amplifiers have multiple fuses, even though each one seems to be at the max A(I) the amplifier should draw? e.g. an amp is 110W RMS x 2@4Ω or 350W Peak x 1@4Ω 220=(I) x 12V or 220W(P)/12V=18.34A(I) and 350W(P)/12V=29.17A(I) and it has 2 x25A fuses (Even the manufacturer didn't think this AB class amp would make 350W(P) hence the 25A Fuse, but why does it have 2 of them? I've seen some with4. This is purely academic, my car audio days ended with good hip-hop in the 90's, but I was giving a local Grom a hand, and the question has always made me wonder, and since I don't have to hit the library and order a book, I thought I'd ask. I just can't find any white sheets on his gear, or any really that address it either, so I had to bug ya a sec. I understand it has 2 channels, but the specs at peak performance(fantasy land) would only draw that 29.17A so 50A would negate their existence. Now for anyone else reading, this is where Mark will say 3 words and it'll be 💡 followed by me wanting to punch myself in the face 😂 Second question, an even more odd one you'll think I'm sure: To make it easy, use the same specs for an example; What would would be the minimum amperage requirement to power it up and get sound? e.g. If I wanted to test his components w/o wiring them into an automobile. I know a 12V source wouldn't need more than 25A max output, even though it'd be fine if it did, as the amp will only pull what it needs if they work like all other DC devices. My question is on the other end of that; Is there a calculation to find the minimum requirement to power it up and make sound? Most DC equipment I know of might not only not work using an under-current source, but a bunch of it will mess up the same as if the source were over-voltage. There always seems to be a documented "range" on the things I work on, yet I also couldn't find anything mentioning minimum power requirements. I wanna make the kid a power supply outside of his whip so he can dabble and experiment pre-installation, that isn't going to freak his Mom's out, but I'm outta pots atm to make him a little buck/boost circuit in lieu of a bench supply. “¯\_(ツ)_/¯“ I could use your input,No Docs, at least not that I could find, to explain either question.. I'd appreciate your help please Sir, if you can.. Those box covers with the keystones are pretty Dope too , I gotta say ... a long way from hot knifing switch plate covers like we used to have to do. I use those same banana plugs too, great value with room for decent sized average system wiring, and killer performance. Thanks for your time Homie, seriously, especially if ya made it this far, I appreciate ya!!! Much love!!! ✌ ϻя.ƹ

When pulling the cable from a spool it is best to un-roll the cable rather than pulling it off the top as you showed. Pulling the cable off the top as you show induces a twist into the cable making it want to knot up and not lay flat. You can keep the cable from knotting up by putting the spool on a cable caddy and pull it straight off, or if you don't have a spool holder just set the spool on the floor and roll the spool across the floor allowing the cable to lay off onto the floor.

I'm a big fan of the Keystone style plates, but holy crap can you spend some money getting them setup "just so". When I sold my house, I ended up keeping the plates because it was a significant expense that the new buyers didn't care about. Very few people would care more than just having the speaker wires run, so... it worked for all of us. And... I also used a boatload of RG6 (maybe have been 59), but I terminated most of it with regular CATV style ends. I did that because I could then use 90 degree adapters on RCA-to-RCA keystone inserts _or_ RCA-to-CATV keystone inserts as needed. Those 90s really helped on places were I had multiple analog signal runs in the plates. Those direct RCA to coax adapters are really deep and it gets tough to run them in a 3.5" wall cavity that also has a heap of other wires.

If you were going to buy RG6 cable already you should have just bought RG6 RCA ends and make your own RCA's. My subs sound ao good this way. I find that all of the extra av control items can be eliminated by using smart devices. TV, projectors and receivers are not smart and can be controlled via apps. I can even remember the last time I used the remote for home theater.

Top tip, use ethernet cable as speaker wire. Cat6a+ 👍 Save yourself money on overated speaker cable.
@Cuzin_Ken3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I've heard of using HDMI over ethernet, but not using ethernet cable to power speakers. I would think the wire gauge would be much too small especially for high powered systems.
