Anyone else incorporate a tablet or iPad into their productivity setup? What are your thoughts? Should I give an iPad Pro a try?

I use my iPad as a second monitor with Duet. Outside of that, I've never found it feasible for actual work.
@nic_ccc33665 жыл бұрын
If you need full MS Office features (and it looks like you might) then the iPad might not suffice. You will get more power though and the iOS app ecosystem is fantastic. But as you're a Windows user, think the Surface Go would suit you more.

@@nic_ccc3366 I'm an Apple user for work purposes. My main gripe is that it's just too damn small and lacking input options to do things like effective code reviews, project documentation, or projects that require me to be working with multiple servers/SSH sessions simultaneously. If my use cases were similar to some of my colleagues (emails, presentations, etc...) it would absolutely suffice, but it isn't a feasible option for "power users" at this point IMO.

Yes! I have an XPS 15 and a surface, but recently changed from using the surface to the iPad Pro 12.9”. The battery life, light weight, always on nature and one of the best pen experiences makes it the perfect companion for the XPS (at least for me). To me carrying a laptop + ARM tablet makes more sense than carrying 2 laptops.

Three years too late but I started the tablet/laptop combo when I first started attending university because Ohio State had a digital flagship program where they gave everyone iPads. I was never an Apple guy and only every used it to write on or take notes for class; at home I'd use it to watch KZbin videos. At the time I was also rocking a garbage laptop, the thing did its best jet engine impression whenever it did anything more than idling. I always thought I preferred desktops, to laptops; turns out that was just because I had never had a nice laptop... I ended up falling asleep with the iPad in bed one night, and being the spastic sleeper I am, I manage to yeet the thing off the bed; it landed on the front sight post of a rifle I had on the floor. The poor thing had some pretty bad damage in the middle of the screen. At the time, I didn't know OSU also had insurance for them you could use. Needing a tablet to do schoolwork online, and not wanting to spend money on an Apple device I didn't really like, I ended up coming across Microsoft's Surface line. Found a pretty great deal on a "Like New" open box bare bones Surface Pro X and they also had the basic Surface pen, and the Surface dial on sale. I think I got the tablet and accessories sub $600-700 after tax; definitely not cheap by any means, but at the time I figured that wasn't bad for a nice full-fledged Windows system... turns out ARM incompatibilities meant I was still lugging my laptop around, because the emulation overhead was too much for the SQ1 and 8GBs of RAM to handle. Over time I found apps/software to replace the writing tools I used on my iPad and just fell in love with the thing. Sure, it's no workstation, but I have the bare bones model and for the web browsing, note taking, and video streaming I end up tasking it with, its more than enough. Every once in a while, a 100+ tab browsing session will lead to an Edge crash, but it typically restores quickly and without a hitch; the auto tab sleeping feature prevents it altogether, unless I'm flipping through loading them all. I ended up falling in love with my SPX and ended up grabbing the Slim Pen 2, a keyboard, and the Surface Dock 2 for it. I was using it to power my whole desk setup for a decent chunk of time and the SPX handled it like a pro. Moving into classes where software incompatibility was going to be a big issue, and my old laptop not being able to handle the software we were working with, I ended up needing a new laptop pretty bad. Being quite particular about the look, noise, and more generally: my desk set up; I was deciding between the Dell XPS and the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio. I already had the Surface Dock, the Surface Slim pen, and I had become quite found of my SPX; I ended up finding a pretty great post-Black Friday deal and found Amazon selling the i7 32GB RTX3050 1TB SSD model for like $2,200-2,300 and picked one up. At the time, I was initially hesitant about the screen hinge holding up, the outrageous price to performance ratio, and the absolute pain that is opening the thing up (which I have not and do not plan on doing). I didn't even really plan on using the touchscreen in tablet mode at the time, which is arguably the one reason you would go for the SLS over the XPS. I just liked how well rounded the quality was, and that I already had the accessories I needed. I still think the value proposition is pretty terrible for what you get; IF you don't mind the lower quality of plastic chassis, don't care for the haptic trackpad, phenomenal screen, dope tablet mode, and generally well-rounded ecosystem the Surface line had created. While initially the screen on the SLS feeling delicate scared me, it's something you get used to and I use it all the time now. I absolutely adore the SLS/SPX combo I am rocking nowadays. The SLS has enough power for what I am doing most of the time, is an absolute pleasure to use, and the battery life isn't horrible (at least compared to my old junk laptop... lol). The SPX compliments it perfectly. It's far lighter, makes a wonderful notepad or extra screen to display notes, has impressive battery life, and fits perfectly in my tech regiment. I can still dock it at my desk (although I only ever charge it at my desk while I sleep and watch TV on my laptop); my slim pen 2 attaches firmly to my SLS, where it stays charged and secured; I can use the pen across both devices without the need to fiddle with pairing procedures; the 3:2 aspect ratio is wonderful for both regular use, or portrait mode when I need to reference PDFs or webpages; and the magnetic 40 pin Surflink docking connector is beautiful. I never dreamed I would find a mobile system I liked this much, having the tablet and laptop both use all the same chargers, accessories, and operating system is amazing. I have the synced clipboard setting on and the latency is so small I rarely even realize I am using two different devices; I have OneDrive set up for file syncing and have made sure to keep my file system organized, so I can access all my files from either device. The extra screen and flawless interoperability is just too nice. What the SPX lacks in power, it makes up for in portability and battery life; vice versa for the SLS (to a lesser degree though... probably. I don't know if the battery life is bad compared to comparable Windows devices to be honest; I'm not a big phone guy, and these are the first new non-phone devices I've had since ~2017). Regardless of my perhaps unfair disappointment in the SLS's battery life, the thing charges quick enough of the dock and even my 60W charging brick and 45W limited USB C to Surface connector charging cable can keep it humming along if I'm not doing anything crazy. I actually was quite disappointed ~ a month or two after getting my SPX. It felt like Microsoft was a bit dishonest, about the impact of it being a Windows On Arm machine (WOA). Even now, I definitely think they could have been more transparent about the limitations, simultaneously putting more effort into speeding up the progress they were making with WOA development; but I think the SPX has a ton of merit for its existence, was super sad to see it get put on the chopping block. I know they still have they SP9 with their newest SQ3 chip, but they're stuffing it in the SP8 chassis and I liked the fully sealed, slightly slimmer, and fan-less design of the SPX. I'll have to try and snag a pimped out SPX with their last gen SQ2 before they run out of new models... :( As for the SLS though, I'll use this one until it's not keeping up with what I need, or I end up killing it... then I'll probably get the latest gen model of the SLS to replace it. The only thing that could really steer me away from the Surface line at this point would be an abandonment of the Surflink connector (not because I have the dock, I just love it); a lack of meaningful generational improvements, that saw the Surface line losing some of the premium features not widely seen in other Windows machines, OR a company doing everything I love about the Surface while being far better in terms of value proposition, repairability, and developing/open-sourcing a convenient connector that rivals the Surflink. Especially that last one, I ADORE the Surflink for charging and data, I get that they have a proprietary charging standard for the Surface connect port, but not having it capable of at least accepting PD3.0 to 100W with a USB C to Surflink cable is just flat out criminal. I am not carrying an unwieldy charging cable with a massive AC/DC Converter in the middle of it; that brick is 3x the size of my cell phone and I could just as easily, pack a new 100W GAN brick and a 3ft cable on a Fuse reel. Do better Microsoft... I'm genuinely sad I like their stuff as much as I do, because I certainly don't expect them to proliferate that beautiful connector of theirs; hell, I doubt I'll see a > 45W PD charging solution hit the market from a third-party seller. One of these days I'm going to get a cheap Dock 2 for parts, harvest the cable and try to figure out that data protocols and power ramp-up... Not sure if this is true but I recall reading Microsoft has gotten around the risk of arcing the tightly packed pins by slanting the physical interface, and having the current through the power pins start at a low value and ramp-up over time once a solid connection is made. Theoretically if that's the case, and you could sniff out the handshake and emulate the power ramp-up of the genuine power supplies, you could find an IC that fits your constraints and have a custom PCB made for a power brick or adapter cable... Thats diving dangerously close to my dream of creating a strictly cable managed world though; and I have not the time, or the energy, to change the world rn... lol TLDR: I like rocking a tablet too; it's a game changer.

For example, if you have some Excel files in your laptop and some Excel files in your Surface Go do you find it a hassle that some files are in this machine and some files are in the other machine? Done. I can't imagine not using it. IOS is not ideal for me and I can't stand Apple, Linux requires too much fiddling to get minimum functionality. Windows 10 is better than all previous versions of windows. If it wasn't for telemetry it'd be perfect. I use Windows 10 LTSC which doesn't update and doesn't have telemetry (Supposedly) or any of the annoying things of Windows 10. It's real good. Good luck staying with Windows XP though.
