As requested here are some details on the frame-in-frame part of the build.
The inner frame is primarily there for the rigidity of the cut-out part, which is now a door. It will need to be smaller than the frame attached to the tailgate itself so it should be made second. The frame in the tailgate should be half under the sheet metal and half not in locations so that the door can close against it serving as a stopper. I meant to use stainless steel hinges but got the wrong ones. The door could use a rubber mat for protection. Note my videos are to give you ideas and not to be a perfect step-by-step example as it leads to more confusion.
I hope I inspired someone today. Share this with a truck guy.

Cool project, and you did a great job. Regarding the video itself, though, you raced through the important parts - I would have appreciated more discussion of the frame-in-frame design, for example - and lingered over the less important details. Everyone already knows how to spray paint, how to ruin the wife's blow dryer when she's not home, etc.

A lender has no say in what you do to or with the truck YOU own. They’ve loaned you money, not the truck. They can accept the truck as collateral in case you don’t pay, but it’s your truck until/unless you default.

But if you screw up the tailgate and then default on the loan they could possibly sue you for the cost to repair.
@AdmiralDG
@AdmiralDG 2 ай бұрын
@@davidbabcock5172 Nope, they just auction it and charge you the difference(usually in collections since you defaulted) from the amount you owe and what they sell it for. The only issues you cause yourself is owing more if you damage the vehicle or alter it and it sells for less at auction. Knowledge based on previous experience as a debt collector. Of course whatever contract you sign with the bank can have special terms that allow for them to collect in a multitude of ways, however they often use the boiler plate standard as its the simplest for them to recover funds with minimal cost.

Good creativity. Easy for us to be armchair posters. I only have two recommendations. 1. Get a tailgate from junkyard to hack on and save original when truck is sold or traded. 2. That can't be weather proof. But it's a great idea.
@PTRRanger951
@PTRRanger951 Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t have to be weatherproof. The tailgates are not sealed to begin with and will drain any water they get in them. They are not made to keep water and dust out.

That is brilliant! I’m a “Find storage in every little niche” kind of guy, and I love this idea. Just one word of advice: Get a patent or copyright or something on this. The auto manufacturers have probably already watched this and will be coming out with “new and improved” do-everything tailgates. The already have the steps and bells and whistles, so I don’t know why somebody hasn’t thought of this - till now! Good on you!

A patent attorney will usually charge between $8,000 and $10,000 for a patent application, but the cost can be higher. In most cases, you should budget between $15,000 and $20,000 to complete the patenting process for your invention.

Well done. Not hiding the error and showing what your plan to fix it is helpful to many people. Only thing that worried me was welding on the truck and not having the shunt attached to the battery. The electrical surge from welding can create problems in the different computer control modules. Older rigs the trick was disconnecting the battery but newer ones that doesn’t always work. I used to own a truck equipment shop and learned GM was the most forgiving for this issue.

Good job, KC, it looks great. But I agree with you about cutting open the tailgate. Not in my truck, at least not by me... I just put a 7/16ths sheet of OSB on the bed, pinned two slats of OSB strips long enough to chock in a Rubbermaid Tote up against the forward bulkhead of the truck bed and the left side of the truck bed. I keep my cargo straps, 2" receiver hitch plug, jumper cables, and anything else I care to put in the Tote. Works well for me. This is not to denigrate your excellent work. Your tailgate adaptation looks fabulous. It's just that I decide to keep things very simple.

This is my favorite tailgate storage build yet. I love how you used the original cut out as the lid. You also didn’t make a box to insert, just used the hole as storage but sort of made a box by sectioning off the area from the underneath with the foam. My only concern is how long will the foam last and is this water proof?

Thank You, It is not waterproof. I have had it get water in it when I hauled stuff when it was raining. Surprisingly it dried out fast in a day. I built this about a year before posting and it is still in great shape. I did apply more paint to it.

Thank youf ro sharing this KCreation ;) I bought an old Silverado and the tailgate is in great shape on the outside but apparently something hit it from the inside at high velocity and bent the tailgate to the point it is very difficult to open and close. I'm going to need to either find a way to straighten it or replace it. I was considering making a tailgate but I think I am going to do a hybrid with storage now. Basically, I'll make a tailgate that is a storage box with diamond plate lid but recess it into the skin if the original after it is relieved and straightened. Sort of like you have but the whole tailgate will be a storage box.

If you're scared don't be. Your paint colour is super common and those tailgates are available at a pick and pull for $100-$120 all day long. I'd have kept the brand new one in the basement and modified the junk yard one. Great idea though. Think I'll do something similar on my 4th gen.

@@KCreations4You Hey! Just watched your video again and I have a welding tip for you...lay a thick piece of scrap metal next to the thinner material you want to weld and flow over to the thinner stuff. Makes it less likely to blow through

@@CaramelColored Wouldn't the scrap piece be welded to it as well or am I missing something?
@CaramelColored
@CaramelColored 2 жыл бұрын
@@KCreations4You It would be a quick transition. I generally do it when my welder just won't go low enough for stuff smaller than 1/8 inch or sheet metal; any attaching points would be exceptionally weak so it should snap off almost by itself. I also do it when welding on sheet metal since it kind of acts like a heat sink too. I normally would just use a scrap 6x3 inch 1/4 inch thick piece.
@CaramelColored

@@KCreations4You If possible, absolute best way to weld thin stuff is to overlap and stitchweld or spot weld. It's beyond hard to get a good buttweld with thin stuff. Still though, the way you did it was a great way! I'm not a pro or anything, just a guy who likes making stuff and admired the work you did.
