January 1980 I was in a Peaches record store in Indianapolis. I was 15. A super cute worker was unboxing new releases. I started a conversation with her -- hey, anything new you recommend? She pulled London Calling out of the box she'd just opened. "Buy this," she said. I'd never heard of the Clash, but the cover looked cool and I wanted to impress the clerk. So I bought it. One great song after another. No bad tracks. Intense, funny, passionate. I swear I listened to the whole album at least 100 times during high school. The standout track was "Train in Vain." Not only because it was a great song, but because it was not listed on the jacket or the label. My first experience with a 'hidden track' -- way before CDs came along. Fifteen was the perfect age for this album. I was impressionable, eager to learn. Desperate to break out of the oppression of high school. The Clash showed me a new way. This album changed my life. It was my generation's Revolver. I'm 55 now and I still listen to London Calling all the time.

Normally being a fan of 90's alternative, and only having heard the Clash's poppier songs on classic rock radio, it was a true joy to hear the breadth and depth of music on the album. From the gloriously bitter "Death or Glory" to the proto-emo "Lost In The Supermarket" to the sheer ragged desperation on the title track, every song was full of clever lines and often searing criticism and I loved it all. Furthermore, the strong reggae influences immediately made me think of that other tumultuous reggae-styled punk band, Sublime. To hear the musical genesis of so much alternative music in that one album was amazing.

In 1979 I was a Jr. College student with a very interesting English teacher. One of the things he had us take a look at was consumer culture, subliminal messages from advertising, etc. He recommended we all take a listen to the Clash song, "All Lost In the Supermarket," which he often quoted lyrics from. Didn't think much of it and did not listen (no internet in those days and albums cost money) until a year or two later when, despite my Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Clapton, Santana guitar roots, I joined a really fun New Wave band called The Defectors. They insisted I get off my bluesy purity pedestal and listen to newcomers like Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Ramones, Pretenders, even Sex Pistols and, of course, The Clash. I'm awfully glad I did, some of the best music of the era. Have loved London Calling ever since, favorite cut probably "The Guns of Brixton," love that rock-ska sound, also "The Right Profile," " The Wrong 'em Boyo," hell, not a bad cut on the whole thing. Really? I love my SG! My SG and my Les Paul Special DC are my 2 favorite guitars to play. My favorite sounding guitar is my 90s Japanese Fender Jazzmaster. The only problem with that one is it requires a perfect setup to avoid tuning issues or rattling or slipping out of the saddle. The break angle on the bridge has to be right and the neck needs a slight back bow. Even you set it up perfectly in a few weeks it will need a neck adjustment. I shimmed the neck but I probably should just get a Mastery bridge. Everyone who has one swears that fixes any Jazzmaster issues once and for all.

I was a teenager when London Calling came out. we were rockers but we all loved the clash and the stranglers, still do. we used to cover the song London Calling in my band before we did our own music. great album, great band. my favourite double album is Live Rust, Neil young and I'm not usually a fan of live albums.

I was born in 1968, and my parents were post-hippies. So, yeah - I got into punk (and jazz), especially when I felt the need to get snobby about rock (which was my parents' music). Thinking about London Calling, which I believe is the greatest punk album, what first struck me is how easygoing the album is. Sure, "London Calling" and "Clampdown" are British punk in the tradition of the Pistols (and even Wire), but "Jimmy Jazz", "Wrong 'Em Boyo", and "Spanish Bombs" are as beholden to Bowie, pub rock, and ska as they are to anything of the time. Great pick.

Well, I buy a lotta records all my life, starting out buying Beatles records in the 1960s. The good records are suspicious when you buy them and grow on you when you own them. Over time, you listen to them more and more and you go back to them as the years go buy. The Clash "London Calling" album is like that. Check out the biography video of Joe Strummer to get some inspiration. The song "Guns of Brixton" is my favourite on the album. Congratulations to JHS Pedals for a great "real deal" channel and some great pedals. I have played guitar for >40 years and I wish you the best!

Ironically, I was listening to London Calling earlier today. It came out at a pivotal time in my “guitar life”. London Calling, Brand New Cadillac, Clampdown, and my favorite… Train in Vain. I love the sound and the energy, and I knew that I would never be able to play guitar like Eddie Van Halen, so hearing this made me feel as though I at least had a chance! 🎸

“London Calling” is my favorite album of all time. It’s like a musical journey; they play a little bit of everything on that record. It’s also one of those albums you can listen to straight through without intending to, and it’s just a balanced, complete record. There’s not a throwaway song on it. The only band that matters! PS: my one request for the DJ at my wedding was that they play “Rudy Can’t Fail”. Also, that Christmas, my wife got me the Joe Strummer Telecaster.

As someone who was 18 when LC came out: it was a little weird. Only two years before The Clash were a true garage band (as the song on their debut said), with maximum energy and minimum fucks given for musical expertise (albeit with a cool sideline in reggae appropriation). LC was a bolt from the blue. A DOUBLE, with a far more polished sound and far more sophisticated approach. Just goes to show what two years solid graft will bring... At the time I was a bit put off by their sudden transformation into a cool looking biker gang, but Ray Lowry's epic parody of the first Elvis album for the cover (along with Pennie Smith's iconic pic of Simonon smashing his bass) remains a design classic, and many years later, this still sounds vital. I was wrong for thinking they'd sold out. It was their last, truly great statement...

Blonde on Blonde, hands down. Simultaneously, and confusingly, one of the best-ever blues albums and romantic love-song albums. Next down from that is the Beatles White Album. Great tunes, great engineering, great playing. As for two-in-one pedals, do we get to include any of those wonderful old wah+extras pedals? You know, the ones that included sirens, tornado/surf sounds, or fuzz. I came into a Korg Mr. Multi this past year, that lets you work the foot treadle like a wah, or like an LFO rate control, to adjust a phaser, a wah, or what Korg called a "double wah" (that sounds a lot like the Schaller Yoy-yoy sound).
