Hi Michael - thanks for the tips. I'm starting rotations next month and was wondering if you could shed some light on how rotations relate to STEP 1. I go to a med school where the schedule is built such that med students take STEP 1 AFTER rotations. Therefore, I am starting rotations without having prepared for/taken STEP 1 and I am feeling very unprepared as a result. Do you think this is a big deal? And do you think there are any high yield things I could study in this next month or should I just take it easy? Thanks

That’s super weird but I guess you really don’t have a choice. Step 1 would barely prepare you for rotations. I always recommend studying pharm as much as possible for rotations. You are gonna learn a ton on rotations and it will stick better than reading a book or memorizing flashcards. Go in with an open mind and try not to be too hard on yourself. Initially docs really only want you to get a good history and do a good physical. Of course try and come up with a plan but they won’t care what you say initially lol

I'm approaching 3rd year and start in August, how did you finance your living expenses in 3rd year like rent and commute ?

The start of 3rd year varies depending on school… but usually starts in July. Expenses will just come from your student loans

what would happen if you failed a shelf exam like surgery

I honestly don’t know. I believe you just retake it before the end of your next rotation.
