I’m sorry, call me a fake anime fan all you want but I have to go dub. I just feel like I connect to the characters more when they speak my native language. I also have to do something while I watch anime. I usually clean or do crafts or draw. Also sometimes I find dub to be better than sub on rare occasions. Assassination classroom is a good example of that in my personal opinion. Koro-sensei’s voice acting in the dub is absolutely AMAZING!!

Yes I agree, for me it's also just easier to connect when I can HEAR what their saying, also big agree on koro-sensei's ENG voice :) 👍

Mother's Basement released an episode today on 3D CGI where he compared it to the subs vs dubs and said "why not both". At this point most dubs are actually good, and the 2 have distinct advantages like subs opening up way more options and coming out first, and dubs being your native language and often have corrected wierd translation glitches, not to mention not requiring you to look at the screen so you can do things like eat, excerise, wash the dishes, or work. Currently JJK is my example of why i prefer dubs, specifically Nobara has a line in the exchange event that just hits so much harder in the dub. (Also when dub transitions to subs on some platforms a bunch of speach quirks pop up like the epithets of big bro or lil sis which no english speaker ever prefixes their siblings name with, and definitely not every time they say it. I can only assume its a quirk of japanese to english translation where the relationship is implied in how they say the name and a translation software included it and anyone doing a dub would correct it) I fully get that in the past dubs could be horrific, but Naruto aired dubbed in America along with plenty of other Anime so i really don't see the problem. (Or how people can extract so much more emotion from voices no in their native language, languages have such different rules about things like stressing and tonal importance that i don't get how people genuinely get more emotion out of it unless the dub didn't even try) Oh well im just a relatively new fan who thinks subbed vs dubbed is basically just gatekeepers being gatekeepers. (Aka people being toxic)

I agree, especially in certain animes where you need to watch for specific details but can’t because you are reading. And as for translation errors- wouldn’t that apply to subtitles. It’s still a translation.

I agree with most except the sub over dub. I watch dubs when I can because I have disabilities that affect my processing abilities and make it more difficult to understand subs than dubs, plus I just personally prefer them most of the time. My autism also makes it so that I really can’t tell the difference in meaning between the subs and dubs anyway, like the two clips from Naruto you showed honestly did not seem different to me lol. My sister also has dyslexia and cannot read subtitles fast enough or accurately enough, so she relies on dubs as well. I think it’s great if you prefer watching anime in its original language but PLEASE don’t relentlessly pick on those who use dubs because many disabled people need them to properly understand their favorite shows.

No Game No Life ruined the show in the first couple minutes for me for instantly sexualizing the 11 year old girl. They literally show a pantie shot of her and it shows her camel toe when she’s only 11! It instantly put a bad taste in my mouth. I tried watching 4 episodes but they kept sexualizing her and it just ruined it for me and I stopped watching. Idk how so many guys love that show. Must be a bunch of pedophiles.

i prefer dubs tho, cuz idk i can follow the story better in dub and simply feel much more connected to the characters when they speak a language i understand...especially with hellsing baccano or black butler where the story is set in england/america...i watch subs on my rewatch runs just to see what they're like, and the writing is better in some cases, but my main problem is that the comedy/horror/weight of what is said is kind of absent when you read it off a subtitle...again just my personal experience

I tend to apply the 3-episode rule to all my watching, but sometimes I fudge it. Life is too short sometimes when a show can grab me in one episode. Also, if I find something morally objectionable to me, a show doesn't get the three episodes.

Funny example with the Madara clip, I personally prefer the Dubbed Madara compared to the Japanese. His voice is 10x more terrifying to me with his deep tones, but yes in that clip you showed the Japanese madara was better but overall dubbed madara was phenomenal imo.

Rule #2 is a slap in the face, takes me back. I had no choice, subbed wasn't available. I went through the trifecta, 3 languages. I watched anime dubbed it my native language(Tagalog).. DragonBall Z, Yu Yu Hakusho(it was called Ghost Fighter) and Slam Dunk. Later Bleach and Naruto.. Then other local channels had Samurai X and Pokemon that were english. I thought Pokemon was actually an American cartoon. Then when I had access to Subs I never looked back. If had to choose one good dubbed anime, Stein's Gate is on par with the subbed one.. Especially Rintaro.. I follow most of the rules you mentioned. Skipping the OP is proabably the rule I break the most unless it's banger like Jujutsu Kaisen KaiKai Kitan or Fire Force Inferno or Black Clover's Black Catcher. Kaibutsu in Beastars in another one. Most OP's are misses but there are a few that just hits you.. Great video..

I agree with the sub/dub thing, but as an italian there is one anime that all people who speak italian as their first language need to watch dubbed: death note! Kira's laugh is extraordinary, that voice actor is really famous here in Italy and his performance in death note makes it worth to watch it dubbed. For what concerns other series, subtitles are generally better

1) You can definitely tell with some anime if it's a hard pass immediately, lol. If the show doesn't raise a red flag I do usually try to give it a few episodes. Very true that a lot of shows have slower pacing and take a couple episodes to build your investment in the setting. 2) Some dubs are actually really good. The dub is always going to be a different experience than the sub, but sometimes that different experience can be great in it's own way. Subs are generally better though, it's almost unheard of to have a modern anime with bad/unprofessional voice acting. 3) Always listen to the opening at least once. If it's a bop, I'll rewatch it all/most episodes. If it's not a bop, I skip.

You are Filipino too? Anyways I'm 32 years old and I'm part of a Anime Group that only contains 27 members including me and my 3 friends, it's a nice and wholesome group who just wanted some friends to talk about anime when we are in our day off or in vacation and when we are depressed, they are very respectful and helps new weebs recommending them beginner anime and explaining the "rules"... We don't try to recruit since when we made this group 27 of us are already been internet friends (except for my 3 friends, they are my homies ever since we are kids) for quite a long time now so we know our personalities and such and we don't really fully trust people to behave since trust is very hard to earn It's just a shame that the reputation of anime community is already bad because of the toxic part of it...

Sometimes it is necessary to apply the 3 episode rule, cause there’s some that I definitely would’ve missed out on if I didn’t stick it out a little longer. I would’ve been sad if I did that with Steins gate because it ended up being one of my favorite animes. But, there’s some animes that got me interested within the first 5 minutes of the first episode.

Ah, I remember these unspoken rules and how I had to learn them as I go. I used to actually have an 8 or 9-episode rule, because I similcasted a lot of stuff, and something critical always happens that far in, that recontextualizes everything that came before it! Little did I know, this was just the anime industry's way of implementing the 3-act structure across a 12 of 13 episode season.

3:57 I think it's totally unfair to call that bad dubbing, yes it wasn't as passionate as the sub but you read the scene wrong. Madara was hyped to fight Hashirama, he literally would refuse to fight Hashirama's wood clones so of course he's happy to see Hashirama. The dub did it fine and also the sub had no intention of making Madara sound angry at all, calling that scene out is quite unfair to the English dubber especially since he did many great works in Naruto.

The reason to watch the original dub is older shows contains made up lines or change atmosphere of the show. The best example is DBZ. It sounds more cheesy and changes a lot of dialogues entirely. It inserts additional explanations of everything. It has downright errors too, when translator used different meaning of word disregarding context. Even subs contain translation errors, but the general meaning is not changed for sake of accommodation to different culture or expectations producers of localized version had. I skip opening and ending immediately, if I don't like the music, which is most of the time. If the music is not to your taste, it's waste of time. Good OP and ED is just nice thing to have, it doesn't have influence on the quality of story and characters. Rule 6 is only the one that truly matters at the end of the day.

I skip the intro >_< I don't want to, but I'm so strapped for time these days, I'm just trying to squeeze an episode or two in wherever I can. I always make a point to at least watch them for the first and last episode, though (assuming they have them).

I would rather say never skip the opening the first time u see it..... Coz most of the times we weeb are binging 10to20 episodes at a times and sometimes they are just a hindrance in the on going story..... For example in narutos war arc I skipped everytime😅😅😅😅......

Perhaps an additional rule: DON'T make a show your entire personality, heck even a part of your personality. Anime and manga are forms of art and literature, and should be analyzed and critiqued as such. It is possible to like or even love something and still see its shortcomings.

I usually give shows a five episode and if i just cannot get into it. I cannot get into Naruto, DBZ, Attack on Titan, Bleach, and One Piece. I prefer subtitled, but Cowboy Bepop and Hellsing Ulitmate are better dubbed. I love Jpop and Jrock, so the opening and closing just get me. And yes my parents are the worse and mom is weird, she literally cannot get it unless its Spirited Away or X1999 Movie. The only rule i have is i don't date in the fandom. (I am married to a Furry! So what!) Yeah thats right if i am single i am female Anime fan and DO NOT DATE

ok, sorry, I'm going to go off a bit on all these points. I don't know if this video from a year ago still reflect Inakyu's opinions. but like. the only 'rules' I see as being actual good advice on this list are wear headphones, and don't harass the creators. these are common sense. the others. well, they feel so antiquated that they just don't reflect any experience I have with anime. I don't even know if any of these 'rules' still hold any weight or if I've just lost any connection with anime fans that I don't have any proper view on what 'the fandom' thinks. but I'm going to break down my opinion on these rules, and it's not like trying to yell at Inakyu, just express why they don't make sense to me. 1. 3 episode rule. absolutely not. there is too much anime I want to watch or even sample to get 3 eps out of everyhting. more importantly, many of the best anime I've seen nail it on 1 episode. while I grant that in your examples, soul eater has a nice structure of 3 eps for the three main protagonists, I believe the first ep is more than enough to gauge if you'll like soul eater. based on the interactions between soul and maka, the main duo of the series. the atmosphere of many scenes and events being at night, lending a bit of darkness or grim feeling, just the great directing from studio bones. plus, if many anime are 1 cour (12 or 13 eps), 3 eps is about a quarter of the show. shouldn't that number be adjusted for longer series? 6 eps for a 2 cour (24-26 eps) about 12 for soul eater which is like 50 eps. what if a near 100 ep anime you had to watch 25 eps, or even 40? no. that's ridiculous. 1 ep should be more than enough. made in abyss is one such anime. the craft that went into designing the world of the abyss, and the way it effected every person who lives around it, that had me and likely many other hooked from the very first episode. combined with the talent and quality of the people who worked on the adaptation (animation, action, directing, acting and music). I do actually think madoka magica warrants 3 episodes because of what happens in ep 3 but even then you can see the astounding quality of directing, art and animation in the show from the first ep. and the very dark and abstract artistic portrayal of the witch's domains? yeah that's there from the start. 2. Sub vs dub. wasn't this just a petty spat fueled by anime elitism? is there really any argument to have here? I find this frankly a crummy mandate since it doesn't even explain to people why folks are so opposed to dubbed anime. Inakyu did show an example clip of a show, a comparison between the sub and dub voice actor's presentation. but in this specific clip, I thought the comparison was fine. the JP voice sounds kind of laughing and mocking, that's the kind of voice they'd use in that case. so the EN voice follows the same tone. Plus I don't really know what show that is or what's happening in the scene, so it's not the greatest example, in my mind, of a bad dub voice. besides, I've seen people talking about the issues of subtitles. the same problems that exist in translation of dubbing voice lines can exist in how you write subtitles. one common example I think is there's a word that is often used by character, I think it's "shimatta!" If I've heard correctly, it means something like, "oh no!" but many subtitles translate it as shit, fuck, dammit, etc. it can make a big difference to have character exclaiming oh no vs swearing. the main reasons that I run with subs is that it's easier to find anime that way. not every series has been dubbed. it's available sooner. the subs are up so much faster than a dub. and I do generally like JP voice actors since there's more of them. but like really if someone wants to watch a dubbed anime there's no reason to dunk on them for it. 3. Ok the op. I follow this rule, inadvertently, pretty regularly. even often catch the ed. but I will skip the op sometimes if I don't love it, or if I'm watching a couple episodes in a row. since a few eps are usually enough to get an idea of how it goes, yeah I might skip an ep or 2 here and there. many, if not most anime, I will watch the op every ep, because it absolutely does fill me in on the mood for the show. it's an important part of the series. I have started to skip the ed more often if it's slow or not super enjoyable. but most of the time I like to catch the ed. all of this is to say that many people absolutely do not follow this guideline. plenty of people skip the op, even those of shows where many of us find the op to be an incredible or important part of the show. and it hurts to think how many people might look at the ops of anime I love, and go yeah I've never heard the song, yeah I skip it. but like, there's too many people who skip ops or don't have the patience for them for this to be a community 'rule'. 4. don't the loli. ok. when I finish posting this comment, I'll go and call the FBI on myself. but like where did you get that definition of a loli (sounds like lolly in lollypop). where did you get the idea of a loli being just any cute anime girl. loli comes from lolicon, which us a fetish based on childish and young girls. loli characters are meant to be lewded. people make the joke about don't actually be lewd about the loli. but like. that's what loli characters are for. I don't like or support the notion of lewding kanna or nezuko or really any of those little anime girls. frankly it gets on my nerves when peopel use loli to refer to any old anime girl. isn't this just a big joke, kind of a meme about the proliferation of a term within anime culture. I don't know. don't just go bandying this term about for any anime girl. 5. don't spoil a show. ok, I grant it's polite to not just dump info about a show or a thing if you know someone is watching it, and you're talking about it person. that could be extended to not just posting shit online. but also people should be able to post about their thoughts if twitter is really their choice of online microcommunication. and if you're watching popular seasonal anime, hey maybe be careful not to go to anime twitter before you've seen the new ep? I don't know, personally I'm very tired about the culture surrounding spoilers. there are dozens of anime that I believe would be just as fantastic and enjoyable if I had known crucial plot details, as they were when I watched them spoiler free. the mark of a really good thing is that you can enjoy it even if you've heard some stuff about it. like most tubers will put spoiler warnings in their videos anyway. I consume stuff so slowly and sporadically and without care for when it comes out, that I just often stumble across spoilers before I've even gotten to it. I've gotten a thick skin for it. like sure, if I didn't know anything about the legend of Zelda breath of the wild as i was playing, if I'd been playing when it came out, I might have had some much more exciting discoveries. but like even though I started playing in earnest 3 years after it came out, and had absorbed a few details about the game, it was still a blast. My experience wasn't really ruined because I knew a few things. here, I'll give you my own rule for anime fans. figure out what works for you. if you want to give anime 3 eps, do it. or don't. if you think 1 ep is enough, that's good too. hey sometimes I make abad call about not liking an anime that I come back to eventually and love. you can do that too. change your mind. subs? great. dubs? If you like them, that's fine too. may I suggest occasionally dabbling the version that you don't like? give a subtitled anime a try. see if there's a dub you like. here's something Inakyu didn't really talk about. the seasonal rush. do you want to catch every anime from the season? watch every anime that everyone's talking about? "You can't miss this!". yeah, but like I've watched shows I later felt like were a waste of time, just cause they were airing and I kinda liked them. or even caught a show that everyone was talking about, that I later felt I didn't like that much. you can skip the season. catch up on older stuff that's already been proven. figure out what you want to put your time into. after all, the best thing about seasonal anime is that they;ll eventually just be anime. you can catch up on something a few months or even years later. if it was really a show that you were going to like, watching it after it comes out shouldn't change how much you like it. sorry this comment was so long. it hurt to write too.

Correction: all subs miss the essence of the original language. We're reading an approximation. At leats the Eng. dub is a refined attempt. The intros/music exist to promote/elevate musicians who'd otherwise be dead in the water (and can be repurposed as karaoke video tracks. That's why they're that long and the text comes up). I don't really care about the anime community as one has to be woke, bang on about toxic masculinity, or other weirdisms.

I mostly follow the 3 ep rule but if a show doesn’t hook me with something in the first or 2nd then I tap out. the Sub vs Dub ‘debate’… I prefer sub but I say enjoy what you Enjoy, skipping the beginning… Heh, I do it alot, headphones - “Yes!”, Loli Lewding - “gross”, Spoilers - I don’t mind them but I try not to spoil it for others unless asked.

1 week for the dub of an anime episode to release??? Wow what country do you live in? wehere i live, it can take up to 2 YEARS for a dub to release. But i still watch dub because i'm a slow af reader and didn't want to pause every 0.5 sec because i wouldn't bei able to read the sub before it disappeares.

Hi, Ok, i do not care because it truly doesnt matter. But the sub/dub debate reminded me of a quora answer. Look watch what you want as you like it. But the only people who care about this silly debate are fans. Ask Neil Gaimen or Musashi Kishimoto, would you like your work translated. None of them are going to say no for 2 reasons. 1. What creative doesnt want their work enjoyed by as many people as possible? 2. No creative is going to turn down the money. Again, does... not... matter. But people only ever debate this from the fan perspective. That thinking has never set right with me. Take care and have a good one

One of the biggest rules hands down in anime (specifically outside of Japan) it's ok to be a weeb. But never NEVER cross into Weaboo territory. Once you start spouting all that kawaii crap 24/7 and dressing up in cosplay to go to the local asian market, you are dead to us.
