I learned eichhörnli when I was little! (when I was a "bibeli" as my parents would say). For animals, I learned the Swiss-German words first before the English ones, such as vögeli and of course Himmälgüügäli. In fact, even though I'm barely conversational in Swiss German, I'll still automatically say the Swiss-German words first! In French, squirrel is still difficult to pronounce! (écureuil... in every language that's a hard word!) When I was teaching English in France, I'd love to hear my students say squirrel and see them try to make the right sound

Thank you so much for this, Claudia! Yes, squirrel and also écureuil indeed are difficult to pronounce haha. So nice that the Swiss German words come to your mind first!

Danke, merci, Andrea. These are my first steps in Swiss German. In Russian squirrel is "belochka" and in Latvian "vāverīte". Informal way of 2 words greeting in Russian is "vsem privet", which also means "Hello (privet), everybody (vsem)".

I grew up hearing, and using, most of these "slang" words. However, several have appeared only since around 1970's. "Mega fein" has appeared only since 2000. In California we have imported Red Squirrels (from eastern USA). In Swiss, these are Eicher if they are adults, in my younger days my parents called them Eicherli if young (or small). An "eichornli' was an acorn, food for the Eicher. I am accustomed to a slightly different version of "pressant"... I mus pressiere !, or... Mir muissied pressiere !. The plural of "Pass uf !", I learned as "Passied uf !" (a long "E" sound, rather than short "e") Or perhaps its just the Zugger dialect...? In a hurry? "Ih mues pressiere !..." plural, "Wir mund pressiere !..." "Adee mitenand", if you are toward the west can be pronounced with the French "Adieu mitenand" That's all for now.... Bis bald ! (until later...)

In Romanian, squirrel is VEVERIȚA. You read it vé-ve-ri-tza, with the accent on the first syllable (v is read like in English, not German). It is actually a very cute and easy word. Edit: It is actually one of the very few words preserved from the ancient language spoken by the Thracians/Dacians who lived in what is Romania now before the Roman Empire conquered.

In Irish(Gaelic), squirrel is 'iora', 'iora rua/glás' = red/grey squirrel. Red squirrel are native to Ireland, but greys came in from the US a few decades ago and are the more dominant species now, although the reds are making a comeback in certain areas thanks to conservation efforts. :)

In Austria, whenever people ask to hear something in dialect, the first thing people always seem to say is: Oachkatzlschwoaf (Eichhörnchenschwanz). Of course, each dialect may have a slightly different pronunciation, but that is, I suppose, the "Chuchikästli" of Austria. :P
