Aww... "Märsi viu mau" for this video... You reminded me, how much I miss that funny language! I spent one beautiful year in Switzerland. I began to understand after 6 months :D. I went there with knowledge of "hochdütsch" but had no idea it won't help me at all :D. When I first heard somebody speak, I was suspicious I went to Netherland instead, but the Alps on the horizon made me calm .D Greetings from Czech republic!

Thank you for this good video. I am also Swiss - and of course there are lots of variations. For example I say "Excüse" instead of "Entschuldigung"... and some people also say " Äxcüsi", which is only another pronounciation of the same. 😊 And: "Gopferdami" is quite a hard swear for my perseption. Therefore many people just say "Gopf" or "Gopferdeli" or "Gopferdeli-nonemou"... 😄

Hi Greg, I spent many years to learn German. It's a quite difficult language, but I love learning foreign languages;) With my Hochdeutsch I traveled to Switzerland and... I had problem, that I can't fully understand what the people said, hehe, so that I changed to English. I think, it has something to do with 'Akzent'. When I hear how the swiss people German speak, I remember the Schwäbische Region in south of Germany. Nevertheless I do have to say I enjoyed this differencies and the Swissgerman words you given in this video:) Very nice explanation that I can follow it! Danke vielmals!

Thanks a lot for your feedback 😊 yeah our language is different also in writing and older than German. But because there is so many different accents even in Switzerland we use German as a common ground when writing 😊 it sounds very similar to the German from Southern Germany even though they will never admit 😂

First of all, I want to thank the author of the channel for making this beautiful and useful video for us! Many people are embarrassed to speak a foreign language if they have no speaking skills. People are afraid to hear criticism from others in their address. It all comes from having a psychological complex - to make a mistake. But, after all, he who does nothing is not wrong! In Yuriy Ivantsiv's workshop "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language" states that we need to talk as much as possible: with yourself, with the mirror, with inanimate objects, with children and with pets. Find an interlocutor in real life or online. Talk without shyness. People won't care how you speak. They understand that you are a foreigner, as long as they understand you. They may even acknowledge your progress in their language and compliment you. However, always be prepared for criticism of your speaking skills. If you have the will to speak, you will gain an interesting interlocutor to consolidate your knowledge. Everyone is strewn with mistakes - don't be afraid to learn from them. As the Latin wisdom says, "walk and thou shalt not go astray". In the book "Polyglot Notes" by Yuriy Ivantsiv an entire chapter is devoted to the development of spoken language. Here you will find many useful tips and each student can choose a technique that suits him or her best! I wish you all the best of luck in your language learning!

I'm an expat living in Lörrach(Germany) but I live exactly on the border with Switzerland(Basel), literally I hear border policemans from my apartment. It's funny and interesting, to walk exactly 1 minute from my apartment and to hear this ''funny'' swiss accent, and then 1 minute walking back and everything come back to german. Actually here the dialekt spoken is Allemanisch which is close to Swiss Deutsch, but without that CH HHHH accent which I find difficult and funny. Grüsse / Grüße :)

When you come to Switzerland as a foreigner and take language classes, how does it work actually? Do they teach standard German first and then Swiss German? Or they go directly to Swiss German?
@SwitzerlandInsider
@SwitzerlandInsider 3 жыл бұрын
I think you can choose which one you want. If you are going through the hassle of learning German, I would learn standard German, as you can also use that in Germany or Austria. In Swiss German there are so many dialects that it‘s different everywhere in Switzerland (words, grammar, pronounciation) and you can learn that later or on the side and in the dialect thats useful for you 😉💪

@SwitzerlandInsider
@SwitzerlandInsider 3 жыл бұрын
It‘s tricky because there are many dialects around. Also the market is not that big. So I suppose what‘s out there is what‘s out there 😉 If you are in Switzerland find a person that is willing to teach you a bit. Like that you get the dialect from where you live. It can be hard because everyone switches to English for their own comfort, but your friend that is willing to teach you is out there and maybe you just havent met them yet 😉😉

Am here to pick a few basic words but most importantly, to make friends so that when I come to Switzerland to start on my journey as a practising lawyer, I wont be so lonely without friends. Any ideas on how I can increase my friendship circle of swiss friends?
@SwitzerlandInsider
@SwitzerlandInsider 4 ай бұрын
Good that you write this question! I have been thinking about making such a video and now i will! It will come in the next couple weeks! Look, when it comes down to making friends, the biggest mistake you can make is the following. It is normal for foreigners and expats when they come to switzerland to start comparing culture and countries. During these comparisons Switzerland often comes across as small, ignorant, cowardly (neutrality), etc. This all pisses a lot of Swiss people off, as Switzerland is often portrayed as the worse of the two countries. Obviously sympathies are low after that. 😉 Then you can make friends at work or connect with other people from your country who have made friends with locals. In Switzerland friendships often happen by introduction through someone or a common hobby or living in the same house. Also give it time, it will come!!! The fact that you go out and ask this question online is proof that you will make it!!

and Two I guess it‘s different everywhere 😉 i like the point you make with exgüse (+ where it comes from), which i know as äxgüsi and don‘t really know anyone that uses it 😄 I think we shouldn‘t use too many rules with Swiss German as there are 100 versions of every word and phrase
