This 4 year video may have just helped cure me of my elbow injuries. I didn't realise that pronating/supinating required the full rotation of the shoulder as well as the arm. Thanks!

Great video. I have been thinking in this direction for many years now. I especially like the part were you give som arguments on why there is a need for an angle inbetween the arm and the racket. I shall look in the Badminton Familiy plattform if I can some more on how to the grip ideally should be in the hand to create the right angle. BTW, we Love the clip content in Badminton Family. Exactly the topic I had been dreaming of every night to ask, and you answered it!! I have one question though. If I am trying to return a shot either FH or BH side approaching from a distances away (which means I have to run sideways towards the shuffle fast), I find this difficult because I am thinking to hit it hard, i need to have big swing. So what is the best way to hit this kind of shot? I understand about the forearm rotation you are referring to, but it seems to work better if I am closer to the shuttle and can hit it upwards. If the shuffle is further away (that's why I have to run towards it), then I cannot rotate the forearm and find I need to swing more to generate so power.
@chitung2277
@chitung2277 4 жыл бұрын
I understand both your answers, but sometimes the shot may call for a big whack (with a big swing), as seen done by professional players regularly. Maybe that's beyomd the abilities of us mere mortals. Thomas...keen to see what you might add to this thread.
@BadmintonFamly
@BadmintonFamly 4 жыл бұрын
Correct it is tricky to rotate fully when reaching for the shuttle far out in the sides, the finger power is key here, and can you just get a small rotation in the wrist/beginning og the forearm then it still can be a good shot with a lot of power💪🏻
@chitung2277
@chitung2277 4 жыл бұрын
Thx Thomas and understand what you are saying. So you suggest don't do the big whack (with the big swing)? I find this shot very inconsistent and soft but it seems like the logical thing to do and I see pro players do it as a defensive shot.
@chiewhoong2020
@chiewhoong2020 4 жыл бұрын
@@chitung2277 Then you need to have the fastest rotation. Meaning lowest length to rotate. So you move your arm in 1 direction fast as you can. And rotate with min area of your arm covered. For the lunge, you can't bend your elbow much. For swing, it needs to be compact and bend your elbow smoothly and sharp; to fix the length distance between you and the shot, you need to step further as you swing.

Would love to see a video from a different perspective. I've been playing for 10 years and I dont remember rotation my arm at all. I'd like to improve my backhand clear but when I watch this video and I look at my arm and how I swing, i'd have to change the way I hold my racket, which I hold normally like you do. I dont understand how to hit the shuttle when rotating to arm, I completely miss the shuttle.

It is a hard thing to learn, but necessary in unlocking almost every shot in the game of badminton. First up start by learning the forehand version. Go find a video from us on the forehand grip. Then from there watch our newest video on clear and look at the slow motion stuff in that. If you get the grip right, then the forearm rotation tends to come naturally. The next thing you do is that you look at learning the backhand version. For this the best material we have is on our app Famly Plus, whack you can get acces to bu having an account. All of our best stuff is on there. If you don't want to use the app then we'd recommend for you to watch our video on the "perfect backhand" and try to train it. Then after all this come back to this video and watch it again. We know that it's a bit of a process, but once you learn it it'll change your game forever!

Just watching your latest (and very good!) TV podcast. I'm considering doing training sessions with a higher string tension than I'm comfortable with to train me to find the sweet-spot and then when I play with a slightly lower string tension in the match it will seem easy to find the sweet spot (albeit with a little less feel). Kind of the same principle as with training with a powertrainer racket - train hard, play easy.Any thoughts ? Thanks Dan
@BadmintonFamly
@BadmintonFamly 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan, interesting thought, but i would probably stick to the increase of tension as you master the tension you play with now, so you developer at the same time the tension goes up👍🏻 But if you are up for it you could try your idea amd see if it works😉 Nice to hear you like the podcast🤩

We always talk about forearm rotation in badminton, but in your example you seem to rotate the whole arm and not only the forearm. I've always used only the forearm because it was the way my coach showed it to me (along with finger power and whole body movement of course), but is there a big advantage of using the whole arm as you seem to be doing here, mechanically speaking?
@boliussa
@boliussa 4 жыл бұрын
obviously if you rotate your upper arm as well as your forearm then all the better.. He says the arm generally. That's why when people smash they rotate their arm, upper arm, lower arm.
@ImKrazyFrench
@ImKrazyFrench 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend using the whole arm in every situation especially for a drive. The movement is to complex and will most likely lack in precision once you tire a little bit. Also it creates instability in the whole body as the torso is in movement. In a fixed drill it's ok, but in a complex situation, it is an hard task to remain still with such technique.
@BadmintonFamly
@BadmintonFamly 4 жыл бұрын
I agree there are more steps/layers to this topic, but i also mention the wrist, the forearm and the full rotation. In the video about the power smash physical i go into more depth on the topic as well💪🏻

@@knowbasics7380 you need to to face net side on with left feet in front if you are right handed. You need to push forward with back leg and twist hips forward whilst upper body is stretched out awaiting for smash. Watch the coaches smash video

Badminton Famly I bought it already. String tension 25lbs. But my game was very bad. Few times mid of the game I changed my old racket (Arcsaber 1000). After the game my elbow and shoulder were painful. Is it because new racket? What I should’ve done first?

William Jacob probably the stiff shaft cause you're not used to it

@theasparagus0076 4 жыл бұрын
William Jacob yes as Mars Hermington said, maybe because the shaft is stiff. I have Astrox 99 and I feel hard to use it. I change back to Voltric 100 Light.

Slowly I’m getting used to it. I guess I had the pain because not getting the sweet spot. Stroke was helpful to my muscles remember the right way to hit the bird.

@BadmintonFamly
@BadmintonFamly Ай бұрын
You hopefully shouldn't sprain a wrist from this. That sounds intense. Inflammation maybe. And if that's the case then yes you are probably using the wrist and not the forearm. The two can be hard to distinguish between. But for any pain that seems out of the ordinary we advise you to seek out a physician to get it checked.

One doubt thomas. The weight of the racket also matters in firearm rotation. There is a racket named apacs feather weight which is only of 69g the lightest racket in the world and your racket is of 4u means around 85g but i have never seen anyone using the racket. We can rotate our forearm with more ease if racket is light so why not a racket of 69g!!?

I think if the racket is heavier the swinging will cause greater momentum in shuttle. Personally I have a light racket but I've tried heavier rackets. They are harder to swing but it's worth the power when smashing. But since my playing style is not aggressive, I like the light racket which I can move with ease and control delicate shots more easily, but compromising power of smashes.

Rotating speed and racket weight both contribute to smash power. But I think the weight factor overrides the rotating speed factor.

lightweight rackets are good for defensive players but offensive players who preferred to attack and good at it prefers the heavier racket. I personally use 4U, my coach is using 3U and my trainer uses a 5U-6U, it depends on the preference of a player.

I agree on the comments here, more weight=more power but at the same time harder to swing around. So go for a weight balance in the middle section in my mind👍🏻
