Yes, baking soda works too. I bought this salt wash to try and I like it too. I also have some of the Fusion salt spray texture that I got on clearance for $6 and it works great too, but the baking soda is the cheapest and most accessible.

The last project you made with the lovely month pictures made me gasp, I have the book those came from! It's called The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden. I got mine when my great grandmother passed on, as it was a book the two of us used to read and look at every time we'd visit them. I'm a little torn as I'm not fond of destroying books for art but the image you chose does look wonderful in the frame!
