I just did a front timing cover reseal on a 14 Focus .. I learned this lesson the hard way. I ended up with p0016 timing correlation code, but surprisingly the engine did run. Your video helped me to understand that the crank sprocket is not keyed to the crank, nor is the pulley which contains the crankshaft position sensor reluctor wheel. I was able to lock the crank in place and roll the cams back into alignement and all is well. Thanks for this video, it was very helpful.

Did you use old crank bolt?

@@cjslowman08 Yup I’ve been working for Subaru for seven years as a SM Tech now I do used cars for extra coin. The job looked very similar to our chain cover re-seals and other Toyota chain cover re-seals so I did not focus on reading every warning on Shop Key Pro. Before removing the crank I saw the reluctor gear and said “weird”, double checked Shop Key and said “well I don’t have the special tool”....”I’ll just mark the pulley against the timing cover”. Three hrs later car won’t start. Then print out all the data from Shop Key, including the safety info and supplemental info. A pot of coffee later I call my Ford guy (who’s a foreman now) and say “how bad can someone shot their self in the foot doing a timing cover re-seal without knowing the warnings?”. His response was “you pulled the crank pulley without the stay tools...ugh...we’re getting an average of one a week this year. The whole engine is out of time and the valves are probably bent”.

@@cjslowman08 yes I reused the crank bolt and diamond lock washer.

@@Shirkatron I did a front timing cover reseal on a 2015 ford escape 2.5 for the first time. l reused the crank bolt and diamond coated washer. Did a test drive and everything is fine. I just heard it is recommended that a new crank bolt was nessasary when taking off crank bolt. I had co workers that helped me that have done this. Didn't read Mitchel even though I printed up the instructions.

@@cjslowman08 i mainly work on Subaru and you would be surprised at the bolts, washers, and seals they want replaced when taking a timing cover off. Like your coworkers I used good judgement and decide on what needs to be replaced. If the crank bolt didn’t fight me coming out, I keep it. If I didn’t rip the crank seal taking the cover off, I keep it.

I replaced the timing belt on a 1800 Mazda F8 engine. The timing marks on the cam pulley is A or B or CX. Which of these are the correct setting? Much appreciate your help in this.

Thus happened to me, crank pulley jumped. Heads have to be worked on now. Now my question is, if pistons look ok, did this hurt the crankshaft or piston bearings? Pistons are able to smoothly go up and down. I removed the oil pan, no debris in there.

how did it happen, was it torqued correctly?
