How is anyone supposed to trust a MP with a criminal record? Doesn’t matter whether rape , embezzlement , theft of public funds , “ insider trading “ . The list goes on . Absolutely ridiculous that MPs have the vote on whether they should be punished for breaking the law.

The issue of injustice applies to the accused also.
@TheMightyHams
@TheMightyHams 16 күн бұрын
@@fabiennemitchell2371 I agree. While everyone wants to approach the issue from an emotional standpoint and always support and believe the victims, an arrest isn't a measure of guiltiness. An accusation with practically no supporting evidence is potentially enough to justify an arrest, so excluding MPs purely on that fact will inevitably cause massive injustice and potentially encourage false accusations. Once the police and CPS believe that there's enough evidence to take a case to court, that is the point of charging, and that should be the minimum baseline for applying any sort of suspension/exclusion. If there's concerns for safeguarding in parliament then that's a separate issue that has to be worked out by parliament, and blanket exclusions or suspensions with no evidence isn't the way to do it. We're in 2024, so if there's concerns about safety then I don't understand why systems can't be implemented where MPs can attend parliament via video call from home. Courts, companies, and schools have been doing it for years, so it's not like there isn't precedent and evidence to show that it would work.

There is a problem when anonymous allegations are made which are later shown to be politically motivated, or just a "tabloid tale"; the legal system in another country already cautioned the political parties against: abusing the system; tying up court and police time; making it more difficult for genuine victims (as yet another year-long case collapsed). So while I do agree with Jess Phillips, if politicians are suspended "their constituents" lack any political representation they may have had, as the court process takes it's own time... While the media publishing allegations and names of those accused, before charges are brought; I don't believe should be allowed. It's a thorny problem: abuse and also abuse of the system; MPs being treated as above the law; at least the problem has been highlighted, so I support Jess.

To give the devil his due and to perform an ad-hoc reductio ad obsurdum. If jess's proposal of removal from parliament of MP's at the point of arrest were to be adopted it really wouldn't take much imagination to come up with a multitude of ways to get MPs falsely arrested. The police are by and large complete retards and they arrest and charge innocent people all day everyday. You could affect the outcome of important votes for example by organising strategic and vexatious complaints. I fear the medicine may be worse than the illness?

The problem is people are arrested all the time. That doesn't mean you're guilty of a crime, that is determined by the subsequent investigation. Only when there's sufficient evidence you are charged but you're still not guilty until proven in court. What I find disturbing is the insinuation and presumption of guilt just because you're arrested. This isn't right, regardless who it is.
