Must We Really Rinse Our Coffee Filter Paper? | What's Wrong With Using Brown Filter Papers?

When we were “young”, we were taught that brown filter paper has a papery taste. Is it true? Why do we always need to rinse our filter paper? What does paper taste like and how does it impact the taste of your cup? Let's do a blind tasting together to find out what's happening with all these filter papers. I've always used brown filters and never heard of this paper taste debate until I bought some from a new brand and those completely changed the taste of my coffee for the worse 🥴 This drastic change in taste got me worried now that I'm drinking more than just coffee..

I always use brown paper filter and I rinse them (but mainly to get the brewer up to temperature).

If it is only testing for paper tastes, isn’t it easier just to test plain water running through them?

Very interesting! I wonder how would the Cafec filters fare against this Hario brown. But i definitely did taste very bad paper taste before from a chinese brand flat bottom paper that wasn't rinsed. It went down like sandpaper down my throat...
