I almost wouldn’t call it a phobia for plankton. For us sure it’s an irrational fear, there’s no reason to be afraid of a whale. Sure they could kill or injure you but they wouldn’t try to. But Plankton is plankton. Whales literally eat him. I’d call that fear pretty rational, even if Pearl prefers an alternative diet. Even the way she says it implies she has eaten plankton before “I prefer salad to plankton anyway” Like if our society had sentient lions and a lion came into a public space with you and specifically commented “eh I prefer gazelle to human” wouldn’t you be afraid too?
