A local subscriber reached out to me with a Hyosung AQUILA 250 GV250 that he bought new, it was getting harder and harder to start then died while riding 9 years ago, he wanted it gone so lets see what it failed for and can we get it running again.

It never fails to amaze me how people will spend thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars on a piece of machinery or a vehicle and then park it outside with absolutely no protection from the elements. Is putting a $8 tarp on it too expensive or to difficult to put on?

actually, covering a bike in a tarp and leaving it for years will accelerate corrosion due to humidity being trapped in there. its better to keep it uncovered to let air around it. ideally it would be in a dry shed or garage, but that isnt always possible

Hey Mustie! Young lad from the UK here, I had the 125cc version of this bike when I was 17 and its the exact same! Identical, even the engine parts and build. Got some fun advice for you if you continue work on this bike. The intake manifolds are gold dust, make sure they dont crack. Good luck getting that airbox out, you cant unless you drop the engine. Stator is known for burning out, check the copper for black residue if you want to. 8 valves is a lot in a high revving 2 cyl so they need checking often. Bike is pretty much unmodifiable, change exhaust, ruin airflow. Change air filter, ruin airflow. Change carb jets, ruin power. Rear cyl known to get hotter than front, a fun way to reduce the build up of temp is to run carb to rear cyl slightly rich to cool cylinder. The carbs may be built with soft screws and they mash really easily on purpose to stop tampering. Somehow you managed to get the bowls off with no issues. Maybe 17 year old me didnt know about JIS drivers haha. Brings back some good memories, I loved my Hyosung. Great build quality and such a looker. I slash cut my exhausts and it sounded absolutely bonkers revving to 11,000.

I've been given one that's in really rough shape and I'm working on it currently trying to get it back on the road as a cheap runaround to have alongside my big bike. The airbox rubbers are missing completely so unsure of how to go forward really - pod filters and a rejet maybe? I'm trying to spend as little as possible 😂 It's running currently, but really rough and inconsistent on idle. Do you know what the vacuum device is on the right hand side below the air filter cover by any chance?

I worked my way through college by working at my uncles gas station. Under the right conditions, the gas tanks in the ground can accumulate water in them. One of our customers came in because he had just filled up his tank at another gas station and it quit running and he coasted into our station. We tried everything, spark, fuel and could not get it to run. Then we smelled the fuel and it was water. When he filled up his tank at the other gas station it was nothing but water. I think that may possibly be what happened to this motorcycle.

I had that happen to me back in the late 80’s with my ‘80 Rabbit. Filled up and went to the train station to go into NYC For the day with some friends. Came back and tried to start it and it just farted once and quit. Had to have it towed and the fuel filter ended up looked like it was full of hot chocolate.

Back in 1974 I went to tow a car that had quit on the road. When I got to the vehicle there was a second car stopped a way farther down the road. The driver walked back as I was hooking the first car up and said his car just quit. The drivers had just seen each other as the fueled up at a gas station just over a mile away. As we were talking, a third car coasted to a stop. That driver had filled up at the same gas station. I had come by that station and there was a tanker there filling the tanks. Either there was water in the gasoline being delivered or there was some water in the sump in the tank that got stirred up as the new fuel got dumped in. As I towed one car and pushed another back to the shop, we stopped at the station where they had filled up with unleaded gas to tell them there was a problem and they shut down the unleaded pumps. We later heard that there were at least 12 vehicles that had problems. We towed three, drained the tanks, changed the fuel filters, added Isopropyl Heet to the tanks and filled them with gasoline. The station that sold them the gas paid for it all.

Evaporust and a tank sealant/liner could possibly bring that tank back to life. You can't really tell what the tank condition is until it is cleaned out, so no guarantees on that, and I'm sure you know that. There is a clone of Evaporust that works, but it does take a bit longer using EDTA and Citric Acid.

I absolutely love Evaporust. The Handtool Rescue KZbin channel uses it extensively and it's quite entertaining.
@davidclark7973
@davidclark7973 8 ай бұрын
Evaporust works great but its expensive. White or apple cider vinegar works great with a little care and patience. Tank lining is almost always short lived and the end of the tank when it fails. This tank could be good as new with a few gallons of white vinegar. Got to follow up with a rinse of bicarbonate of soda to neutralise the slight acidity.
@richardclifton4120
@richardclifton4120 8 ай бұрын
@@davidclark7973 There is an alternative to Evaporust and I posted the video that proves it, but someone deleted the link on KZbin. It costs about a nickel on the dollar to make and I know it works because I made some. The liner is only as good as the person prepping the tank and after all, he said the MC isn't worth $500.00 but buying a new tank probably isn't worth it either. A few more years and the tank can be used. Search for EDTA and Evaporust on KZbin and you should be able to find the video for the clone version.

Any acid added to a liquid instantly makes it different than evaporust. It also makes it instantly destructive. Evaporust converts the rust but does not attack the metal. The acids attacks the metal no matter what.

But last year I got myself a 2001 Yammy Virago XVS250 from a friend & paid X amount and got it towed home on a trailer... it had sat in a garage for the last 11 years. I drained & replaced the oil & replaced the oil filter. I drained the old petrol & replaced. I replaced the air filter sponge. I brought a new battery & I put in the key & hit the startup button. She fired up instantly & she purred. She then cut out when put into gear... turns out the sidestand sensor had seized up being in the same place for 11 years. Went & got the WOF and re-registered her. Had a few things to watch out for. When the shocks blew out, got fixed. Changed the 21 year old tyres & tubes. Noticed petrol leak so replaced the whole fuelcock unit. This bike had only 3,8ookms on her clock at the time I got her. She is now up to almost 14,000kms. So there are gems sitting away just waiting to be put back on the road again 🙂nz*

Author:MCN Staff Published: 23 November 2006 Updated: 21 November 2014 The Hyosung GV650 Aquila is an oddball Korean concoction whose extreme Dan Dare styling is surprisingly more than matched by its consummate ability, specification and value - for a cruiser at least. Look past the GV650 Aqulia's Star Trek styling and there’s a decent SV-style engine, quality cycle parts and effective, real world performance - and not much to rival the Hyosung GV650 Aquila. Ride quality & brakes Next up: Engine 4 out of 5 (4/5) Again, surprisingly good. Many assume cruisers don’t handle and although the Hyosung GV650 Aquila's certainly no sports bike, with decent usd forks and twin discs up front and a reasonable twin shock set-up at the rear, the GV650 Aquila manages to be both laid-back sumptious AND retain enough control to makes bends entertaining. Well, for a custom bike at least. Engine Next up: Reliability 4 out of 5 (4/5) The Hyosung GV650 Aquila motor is essentially a copy of Suzuki’s excellent liquid-cooled V-twin from the SV650 - and a good choice it is, too. This mid-sized V-twin in the Hyosung GV650 Aquila is eager yet flexibile, responsive around town and yet thrilling and brisk at the top end, too. The gearbox is sweet, too. If it can match Suzuki’s own reliability record, Hyosung are onto a winner with the GV650 Aquila. Reliability & build quality Next up: Value 3 out of 5 (3/5) Still a little early in the day to say with the Hyosung GV650 Aquila. The oddly-named GV650 Aquila was launched onto the UK market in early 2006 and although no major problems have yet come to light (nor have they with the similarly powered roadster GT models), these are new products from a still largely unproven manufacturer. Value vs rivals Next up: Equipment 3 out of 5 (3/5) At £4000+ new, the Hyosung GV650 Aquila isn’t actually any cheaper than Suzuki’s own SV650, wo it’s not actually the bargain many expect. That said, the Hyosung GV650 Aquila is well equipped and, in the middleweight cruiser class, is pretty well unique making it good value. Find a Hyosung GV650 Aquila for sale. Equipment 3 out of 5 (3/5) You don’t get a hugger or centrestand with the Hyosung GV650 Aquila. You do get a pillion seat on the Hyosung GV650 Aquila that’s not a dirty joke, and a digital display for water temp, trips and clock making the GV650 Aqulia a pretty equipped bike. This from Motorcycle news uk,should help you put more value on the bike...................

The rust on the spark plugs be the poor fuel water being burnt? I wasn't expecting the carb bowls relatively clean . A new tank and she's ready to go. Greetings from a snowy small airport in Iowa. By the way my last name in Czech means Falcon/Hawk ( close ).

Because the innards of the carb were clean but the tank above and the float bowls had rust it makes me think the water for in the tank from either rain or condensation...ran down the fuel line (water being more dense than fuel), collected in those bowls with the rust it brought down, then evaporated.

I bought a 98 Rebel 250 here in the uk . Been standing for years onside a garage . Tank was like yours . Never managed to get it usable . I bought a Chinese replacement from the usa . Cost under £100 and solved all the problems . My carb was even worse than yours . Bike has only 3k miles on it and looks and rides as new now . Great video . Only just found you .

Mustie1, I’ve never seen rust so fine and powdery. Weird for sure! But you got it running even though the plugs were rusty. Be interesting to see what those cylinders and rings looked like (no do’t take it apart). It runs so put a tank on it and sell it. Hope your year started of good.

If there is such a thing as “pretty rust” we just saw it. Run a pressure washer wand in and around for twenty minutes with the tank upside down. Evaporust is a great product. Mustie is a frugal guy when it comes to fluids. I would try this next. I was a bit puzzled when he said that it’s ONLY a 500 dollar bike. All profit ! He would rather make a Frankenstein vehicle because it’s way more fun. So be it. Nuff said.

Pro tip: bikes with oil coolers typically need to be started and run for a few minutes before oil level is checked. They're all different--you usually have to default to whatever they tell you in the manual.

I think I might check torque on heads. A impact drill with a JIS bit and some lube is good to get the carb screws out. Set the drill on a low setting at first and work your way up. Love this one!❤

You nailed it, water was getting in tank sitting outside. explains why it stopped one day.. likely after it rained. Bike likely only needs exhaust gaskets. the guys that clear drains with pressure water hoses have a reverse spray nozzle that could be useful for cleaning out gas tanks. The gas tank can be fixed by mixing vinegar with baking soda & pebbles to shake inside tank, then something to halt the oxidation. WD40 & Mineral Spirits also work well for removing rust. heating up some grease to coat the top inside of the gas tank and rest will give it years of protection from rust after cleaning.

That's a good looking bike, worth a bit of effort. I'm sure a new rider looking for their first bike would be thrilled with it. 250cc= cheaper insurance. Or maybe it's a good candidate for a cafe conversion. Better to modify a cheap bike than mess-up a more desirable original BMW etc. In Canada, we have product called Seal-All that is my go-to for gas related sealing. I've plugged many, many pinholes, sealed leaky petcocks and salvaged deteriorated gaskets with great success. I'm sure it's available to you in the US, hell, it's probably made down there!. I'd certainly give cleaning the tank a try. The Por15 tank kit works well, but the etching acid might be a bit much in this case, maybe dilute it a bit and give it multiple flushes. Evaporust and a bit of patience might be the answer. Certainly worth a try. Love your videos man, been watching for a long time!

Clean old tank well but maybe add an inline filter if tank metal a bit funky to avoid future issues? That dry rust powder is crazy stuff! Was just thinking that perhaps that tank has a way of not sealing well and that surround fills with rain water and allows water into that tank? Treat with vinegar, clean and then treat with Ospho? Reline with Caswells tank cream or other?

It will be interesting to see what Evapo-Rust would do to the inside of this fuel tank. My 2010 Kazuma Jaguar Four Wheeler, it’s a Polaris clone, had a similar tank issue but it was remedied with a poor in liner. The engine from this bike would be cool in a two or four seater dune buggy.

Over the years I have encountered several rusted, gunky gas tanks. I have found that filling the tank with pepsi cola and allowing it sit in a warm place for a day or two will clean the tank very well. Looking at this tank a second application might be necessary. I have been watching your videos for 2 years or so...I often get involved in recovery of "used up" machinery and enjoy your approach. Thanks for the entertaining and informative hours. I used to sell Hyosung new (amongst other bikes) and it's nice to see a deep dive into one. They're an air/oil cooled 8 valve engine designed by Suzuki and made in South Korea. I always thought they looked like a "little Fat Boy". I confess never actually rode the 250, but I did take the 650 out a couple times but it rained both times... Amazing the way that the powdered rust in the carbs came through the fuel filter! It looks like there is NO gas cap drain on the bike and that allowed rain water into the tank...Bad design and outdoor storage caused that bike to almost die. Interestingly the Australian site lists NEW gas tanks (amongst other parts) still for sale (bit pricy though...) (and I think you're supposed to turn the crank clockwise...)

The tank can be easily salvaged. Clean it out with pressure wash, then let some vinegar sit in it go get the big chunks, then finish with a full tank of Evaporust. Blow dry it, add your favorite internal protectant and you'll have a tank good as new.

I'm surprised the owner didn't take it to a shop for repair. It just needed a carb clean. The rusted tank damage happened while it sat 9 years. Usually people won't give up until it's been in the shop a few times. Mustie did a nice job figuring it out.

Those Hyosung bikes made in South Korea didn't have a great reputation with bikers where I live. They were seen as lower quality clones/knock-offs of Japanese brands like Honda or Suzuki (they had a model similar to the SV650). I don't think it was just down to bias against Korean manufacture. The reviews I remember recommended spending a bit more on something with better quality and parts availability. Still, if it's free and you find you like it, then all is good.
