This is really an incredible performance. How do they do it!? (Who invented this as an a cappella performance?) Very powerful contrast between the lead and the back up, and the backup contrasts with itself as well. This is definitely the best one I've seen of whatever category this is, (these qualities, and what with he extra size of it, with the additional male voices). I think male voices, especially low ones, can contrast especially beautifully with female voices. There's a strong bass here. The effect reminds me of "The Weavers - Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida." Put differently, I especially love listening to beautiful women's voices with low mens voices in the background or accompanying them, [Sissel & Placido Domingo!]. They take flight, soar ("Holly Near & Ronnie Gilbert, from 'Wasn't That a Time?'")! I really like her lead voice across this range and in this very powerful contrast (great song choice for her). It's a great new favorite for me. This form of a cappella is very disciplined, especially in the background, which then makes a great contrast. I think this genre has an ascetic quality to it, in the discipline and repetitive quality (not even singing words). I see it as a kind of spiritual discipline that they've developed (that the genre has developed). The background singers go to great lengths to back up 10 or 20 lead singers, one at a time, each in demanding ways, before they themselves take the lead. And then the lead singer and the melody and lyrics ("and now we fly") here are quite easy going, in contrast. So here they support this lead singer, in these contrasts that enhance or help actualize the beauty of her voice. They work very very hard for her, (and visa versa in the other performances). It's a wonderful act of support for each other I need a playlist of these. This song especially illustrates all of these qualities and values. (So here it is, so far: "A Cappella Favorites")
