so weird hearing Mutts voice after my last meeting up with him in London 1978. He was in Highbury Studios with the Boomtown Rats. And afterwards we went to a club in the City. We were in the South African military together ,and I followed his band Hocus wherever they played. Happy that he has become such a success.

It's actually shocking there hasn't been a high end doc made. I really wish he'd at least do a phone interview with someone like Bob Rock just to share his process/how and why he did things the way he did..etc. I've looked up to the guy for the last 40+ years and while he owes us nothing, at the same time it's just such an absolute waste that we don't get to learn from him. Literally #1 on my bucket list would be to sit in the back corner of his control room for a day just to watch how he works and creates with other artists.

@Matthew Cox yes he did lose a beautiful thing. But from what Shania said in “Why Not? With Shania” she said that her marriage with Mutt was breaking down for a while because she was away from Mutt (because she on tour a lot, on the road etc) while Mutt was also away from her because he was working in the studio with other artists as well. Both of them were workaholics. Most times they weren’t together despite being married. They drifted apart from each other. While Shania always trying to work things with Mutt, he pretty much gave up and told her. “It’s over between us” he was probably having an affair with Marie Anne at that point. He went a stray. Marriage takes alot of work, and because they were apart, the marriage broke down. It takes two people to ruin a relationship as well as two to make it work.

@@nomadicdullard Agree! Completely different band tbh. The difference between High'n'Dry, with Steamin and Pete Willis rocking hard, and the sound they have today with Viv and Phil. Just two very different bands. The electric drums also has a say there, obviously. They went from stellar hardrock act to superb Sunset Strip cartoonish band. And I don't mean that in a derogatory way, because I enjoy both sides of the band. Still it's remarkable how much they changed over the years.

Everyone artists had producers who are there for the artist. Shania had many songs of her own that her record company wouldn't let her put on her first record. Songs like Boots, Any Man of Mine, No One Needs to Know, God Bless the Child. They let her put God Ain't Gonna Getcha for That, (the only real country song on the album). But didn't release it. Can you imagine how much money Mercury Nashville had made let her put those songs on her first album? Critics came after Shania because she was a talent on her own...those songs I mentioned, her songwriting and musicianship, and that she was Canadian. If she didn't write her own songs and was American, and shopped for songs like Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Glen Campbell, Carrie Underwood, the list goes on there might have been some interest in her. None of these recording artists would have made it if they were from Timmins Ontario Canada. All artists have producers. The Beatles had George Martin, the BeeGees - Robert Stigwood, Meatloaf - Jim Steinmann, Michael Jackson - Smokey Robinson. Again the list goes on. Mutt was instrumental in Shania's career. As all producers are instrumental for the record companies. If he hadn't shown interest in her music and voice, at a certain point, her 2nd album might have come at a later date. Or Harold Shedd would have let her put her songs on the second album. Mutt was not successful as a performer or songwriter early in his career. He was in a band that went nowhere. So he got into producing. Like many failed artists trying to become famous. But nobody ever mentions that. Now of course they became good collaborators. But Mutt could never be the performer, singer songwriter and producer that Shania is. If it was the other way around Noobe would say the woman made the man's career. Only critics have been the ones to only credit Mutt Lange not those who know her story. She's been singing since she was 3 years old; becoming professional at 8. And those who do criticize her it's most likely they're jealous because their favourite artist isn't as good or iconic. The previous singers I mentioned have producers and songwriters well. But No one says these people made their career. And Shania's career is still hot. Where's Mutt Lange these days? He made an album with Nickelback - nothing. He wrote a song for Carrie Underwood - ???

Producers become producers because they weren't successful on their own in a band or solo. Mutt was in a band called Hocus Pocus who went nowhere. Hence producing records for other other artists who met success with their songwriting and performing. I think Mutt became jealous of Shania's success. After all she made as a Canadian as far from celebrity (Timmins ON) as you could be. And got a recording contract in Nashville without Mutt. That's success right there. Mutt didn't have a big recording contract ever. With the exception of God Ain't Gonna Getcha for that, Mercury Nashville didn't let her have her own songs on her first record. By pure luck Mutt was given a package of the latest in country music and liked Shania's voice...wanting to know if she wrote her own music and sang him him 4 songs. The record company got a new president (Luke Lewis) and let Shania put those songs on her next record. Without this new president there would have been no The woman in Me. I'm not denying Mutt's contribution at all. But Shania is the talent. The proof is that her career is still hot. Whereas Mutt produced a record with Nickelback that went nowhere. The same with a song he'd written for Carrie Underwood. I also think Mutt became jealous of Shania because she was such a great success...writer, singer, producer,entrepreneur, author. Made her tours the great success they are

Calm down Donna the band was called hocus and Mutt was a teenage in South Africa when they were in that band! They were kids performing in small venues whilst in school back then! Mutt studied Music in a private boys school in Zambia. Mutt has written hundreds of songs, and won 6 Grammy awards. In face you win my love wasn’t a Shania collaboration, mutt wrote that song years before he met Shania and gave it to her to use in woman in me. I’m sure you know about how def leopard have said that their best band member was the one that invisible and said they wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for Mutt Lange during their speech when they we’re inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame! Stop downplaying a legend! Shania is a mediocre singer/songwriter and her songs are above average. Mutt added the wow factor to her songs.
