BrunoT - You're a prime example why I started the channel, when I started most channels just glossed over what a beginner needed to know, I was told by several people before starting the channel that I had a natural way of teaching, whatever it was I was speaking about, so I decided to start teaching new pipe smokers what they needed to know when it came to smoking a pipe, and I have to say the success I have had is surprising, I thought I would put up a video, and might have a couple hundred subscribers, but wow, over 10,000 in a year and a half, truly unexpected. In addition to what you just said, in my experience I've noticed that the ash that we usually tap during smoking created unecessary hot spots in my briar pipe. In other words, today I always remove the ash just before it gets too hot, and relit again for the final round and it works perfectly, as a result the top of the bowl doesnt get hot. I'm happy that you took a time to teach people, those little things about smoking a pipe make a lot of difference, even to prevent cracking the bowl. Thank you Muttn!

After about a 20 year hiatus, I found my pipes in a box.. back in the saddle again and enjoying your channel. One question that still plagues me is... building cake at the base of the bowl. May I ask what state you are in ? Also what is the name of the app (?) you catalog with on your Ipod and is it available on Google Play ? Right now, I'm smoking some Captain Black White (aka Original) in my favorite pipe, a Stanwell Danish Star, also known as a Diplomat. Its kind of, well, dainty but it has the best grain of my 17 pipe collection. Despite what other tobacconists say about Captain Black (like "Why dont you move up in the world and smoke something better") its my favorite tobacco and to hell with them. I smoke what I like and it was the aroma that got me started on pipe smoking. Best Regards. Steve from Denver (We re a dying breed out here !)
@tcc3008922 жыл бұрын
I usually, like you, smoke until there's about a quarter or a third of the tobacco left, then tap the excess ash out. Before relighting for the final time I add whatever small pieces of tobacco were left over from the flake that didn't fit in the bowl initially, then relight. It makes the experience last a little longer, plus there's something satisfying about smoking the entirety of a single flake rather than returning the leftovers to the jar. Obviously this approach might not be possible with larger bowls that require more than a single flake to fill, but it works well with the relatively small bowls that Falcon pipes tend to use. Cheers for the videos! 👍

As you smoke, another way to get rid of the ash is to blow out in a controlled manner, the air will blast the ash out, leaving the heavier tobacco in the bowl. If you do this throughout the bowl, the amount of ash coming out is almost unnoticeable. Just remember to use the tamper more often throughout the bowl.

Thanks for this. Might seem obvious to some but as a new piper I actually thought you just tamped, re-lit and carried on smoking. Was finding as I got down below the half bowl mark I was having trouble re-lighting and was getting an ashy taste. Earlier this evening I actually thought I must have finished the bowl so stopped smoking but when I went to clean it out there was still a quarter of a bowl of tobacco left under the ash. Also, presumably the thicker the layer of ash the less oxygen can get to the ember causing more re-lights?
@MuttnchopPiper8 жыл бұрын
Stephen Green right you are my friend, yeah, some tobacco's seem to burn fine, I can go from char light to the bottom of the bowl, but others like you said I get to the last quarter of the bowl, and the ash layer is so thick the tobacco underneath won't stay lit, so I loosen the ash, dump it, and re light the tobacco. 👍👍👍

Love you videos. When you poke the loose ash and dump it out from the last third of the bowl, I notice there is unspent tobacco built up along the side of the bowl. Do you recommend caving in those edges making a flat burn surface, and lightly tamping it so you don't waste tobacco? Or is this something you don't recommend?
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Nigel Mancinie - You can do that, but there is so little tobacco along the sides it might not be worth it. 👍👍👍
