We headed out of St Lucie Inlet on Florida's Treasure Coast with one thing in mind. Catching BIG Mutton Snapper and once we found them it became a Mutton Snapper Slay Fest. Gear used was Star Rods, Shimano Speedmaster, and Shimano Torium reels. The Mutton Rigs and presentation mean everything when fishing for Mutton Snapper. The leaders are 30 to 50' long depending on current of 30-40 pound Yozuri Flourocarbon leader. For hooks we used 4/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hooks. Attaching the leading to the main line is a Spro 80 pound power swivel and then a FisherKing weight clip on the main line. Baits of choice are Bonito belly strips,, Ballyhoo plugs, and the best performing bait of the day which was live medium size Pilchards. We ended up catching a surprise monster fish on this trip also. Watch the video for more Mutton Snapper fishing tips and feel free to comment with any questions.

Thank you very much. The clip is called FisherKing clips. You can get them on Amazon or their website. I buy the five pack with the balloons off Amazon and then add a heavy bank sinker clip. You’re using a chicken rig and most likely fishing right on the wrecks. With Muttons you need to make your bait appear as natural as possible.They’re smart fish especially the bigger ones. Find wrecks along reef lines and anchor up current of the wreck so you’re fishing 100-200 feet from it. Enough weight to hold just over bottom with a long leader drifting back to a single circle hook.

The Paraflex is 30 to 50 mono or 50 to 180 braid. As you can see on the first fish how much play it has though. I use it for heavier fish also and you need that strength when trying to horse up bigger Mutton fast. The Star Delux on the Torium in the video is 15 to 30 med/heavy and is fine though.

Great catch. Curious why you use a long leader and not a 3 way?
@CProFishingWithWayne
@CProFishingWithWayne 3 жыл бұрын
Mutton are smart fish and very wary. Weights will spook them especially the larger one's. The long leaders keep the bait far away from the weight and make the bait look more natural swaying in the current. Because of the long leaders you would have to hand line it in once you reach a three way swivel. That's why I use a power swivel and the FisherKing clips I can remove and reel down to the fish.

If you had a lot of current, how are you setting up on those fish using 8oz of lead? Are you pulling up way past them and just drifting your bait back or are you dropping pretty much on them?
@CProFishingWithWayne
@CProFishingWithWayne 3 жыл бұрын
I use Gamakatsu octopus circle hooks. The hook will set itself by the time you grab the rod when they take it fast. If you notice smaller taps when they don’t run with it, you just reel fast until you’re tight and the hook will set.

Whether drifting and spot locked the weights are nearly vertical. Probably end up 10-30 feet down current behind the boat. I like the weight about 5-10 feet off the bottom with the long leader swaying straight back.

Awesome video Wayne, when checking around about 100yds off the wrecks how do you 'look' for the muttons out there in the sand to see if they are there? Are you looking for the 'dust' on the bottom or the distinct lines up off the bottom? I can only seem to find grunts, thanks
@CProFishingWithWayne
@CProFishingWithWayne 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you much appreciated. I have come to learn the type of areas I will find them, and recognize their patterns on the depth finder which I showed in the video. When they're schooled up they will be from the bottom and rising up in the water column. When they're rising in the column you are going to have a good time. Use bigger baits that Grunts and other reef dwellers won't bother with. Don't use squid or sardines which will work but if there's other fish around they will eat away at it. Use light flourocarbon leader 30-40 lb and make sure it's long and far away from the weight so the fish don't get spooked.
