Great information here. Got my first Hawken in 1987 and have been shooting black powder almost exclusively ever since. 👍🏼👍🏼

Thanks for putting up this video. This is extremely valuable information for the new shooter, and also useful as a valuable reminder to us older guys who have been muzzle loading for many years. It is always useful to compare notes with other experienced shooters, as you can always pick up new ideas or a different take on the way you've been doing it for years. Best wishes and thanks again for this video.

I found using Hoppes cleaning patches. Fits snug enough when folded to between bore and jag. But, not too tight to clean bore thoroughly. I usually use unfolded first 1 or 2 swabs then fold to get what ever is left. Many better choices are available but this has worked great for me. Awesome, introductions.

Range Rods: brass is ideal, avoid fiberglass or steel, they will wreck your bore. Patches: Michael’s sells pillow ticking by the yard and there’s several methods for cutting them into rounds or simple pre-scored strips. Cleaning formula: Dawn dish detergent + H2O works very well.

Good points. My steel rods have turned muzzle bushings to protect the bore

Nothing wrong with steel if you have a muzzle protector on it.

Great timing. Tracking number says the flintlock will be here tomorrow and I’ve built a list. It’s always nice to cross reference to find what many different folks mention.

I would recommend an unbreakable ramrod for field use. T/C used to sell one that was very affordable. you can still display your rifle with a nice looking wooden rod, but they have been known to break during use.

You can get good unbreakable ones from Dixie Gun Works in Union City, Tennessee.

I just had the YT algorithm suggest your channel. As someone who loves to Muzzleloader hunt. This video is spot on. The one thing I would add, is for some Inline Muzzleloaders. I keep a 12mm socket and handle in my kits for the breech plug on my CVA Kodiak.

Excellent list - I can't recall if you listed a shooting bag, ball and/or shot flask, or flint wallet - but your effort was spot-on as always. By the by, today I fired and cleaned my flintlock rifle after leaving it loaded for 12 days due to Wisconsin's muzzleloader season. It fired without delay - Cortney was confident that it would fire, I was not. Thank you for the excellent content and your introduction of muzzleloading to Cortney and I.

Definitely good items to have, I consider those on a “round 3” buying list. Good to have, but not a need to get out and get started. Thank you for sharing! Always cool to hear how muzzleoaders perform like that Richard!!

As a traditional flintlock shooter, I don't always agree, but this was a very good and needed video. I also wanted to thank you for mentioning Ted Cash. It's a local business that has supported local and national muzzle loading

I now enjoy making my own tools and accoutrements. I also love rock hounding for flint at some of the old wharf locations where flint was a ballast and tossed overboard as cargo was loaded. Some of these flint rocks can be knapped into several usable and good gun flints. Next is a Wheelock since I have access to iron pyrite (foolsgold) for the spark.

Keep up the good work Ethan, you are helping new people's interest in the sport. I see it at events, just blank firing so they see the flash & boom from a flintlock excites the public's interest. Thank You & and Merry Christmas to you & yours.

Keep in mind about the in lines. Alternative parts are very limited as if your model are discontinued, you will be screwed. I have a Winchester Apex which is no longer made and Winchester ended it's muzzle loader line up before being bought out by Browning. The only thing I can get for an alternative and thankfully the barrels are from CVA as only AC1678A Kodiak breech plug works as an alternative. It's easier to get alternative parts for traditional muzzle loaders than in lines.

I've been shooting traditional BP guns since 1993. I started out with " Hawken" style percussion rifles and a possible bag weighing several pounds, and an obsession with accuracy. Now that I'm old, I preferred smoothbores with paper cartridges

That was a lot of good info, Thanks. But was wondering if anything different for smoothbore or shot gunning?
@ILoveMuzzleloading7 күн бұрын
Wads/cards or tow wadding. Shot snake would be handy, and a means to measure the shot. The rest would be the same. No need for the short starters

Eathan, what do you think has more impact on accuracy, patch thickness or powder charge?

I can’t get mine to shoot with any degree of accuracy. My wads are shredded black messes. Thinking they’re too thin and I need a smaller RB and thicker patch. Maybe change lube also.

You are on the right track. Change one thing at a time and see.
@FokkerAce19175 күн бұрын
If by wads you mean patches then it could be one or more issues. What is your ball size and patch thickness? How much powder? Do you know the twist rate of your rifling? Is it round or flat bottom rifling? How easy is it to ram down, as in does it feel nearly impossible to ram or does it go down without resistance?

It is always nice to watch your videos. Ethen i am building a hawkins in vest arms 50 cal cap lock. I am having a problem getting the lock and barrel fitting to either. There is a slot on the barrel the lock will not line up plus getting the trigger and lock to work is a night mare. Any advice would be great, If you have a video on this, please advise .thank you much

I remember the first time i shot my brothers hawkin rifle. After the third shot i couldn't ram the ball down so i went up to a tree and thumped the rod hitting the tree. I learned something that day. It still comes out very quickly. And swab the barrel after two or three shots.

Awhile back i came across a video of some dude talking about what cost to get into muzzle loading the guy was looking crap up onlune and naming off prices then quotes a total of 2000 dollars the guy never showed an actual price or even a picture that video infuriated me why would some one lie to newbies to the hobby i sat around for probably 3 months before i made my video on the true cost to get into muzzleloading and as you mightve guessed its not even close to 2000 dollars the real cost is way under a 1000
