Tip of the day ; Take a 5 gallon bucket of seawater and pour it slowly over the frozen lines at the cleats, it will defrost them enough to make it a lot easier to untie. Once free dunk the whole line into the water to defrost it , coil them up and leave them on deck till it warms or in the shower. the water temperature was warm enough where you were to defrost the lines.

That 76 is a small ship. My favorites are still the Fleming yachts. But, I love the Nordhavn’s also. I currently have a Grand Banks, its nice to be able to do 20kts when you want to get somewhere fast. Glad I live on the gulf coast where it never gets that cold.

Excellent boat handling !!!! especially use of the wing engine and understanding how to use it in a very tight situation. If not handle properly you can get yourself into a big mess. Hats off to the Captain. I would feel at ease with you at the wheel. I have never done winter boating and would always feel uneasy with icing up.

@@mvfreedom looking in my pae paperwork here, looks like a 76 has a base price of $6.4m. of course that is stripped down with nothing, then you have all you customizations on top of that. i assume on a boat of that size you would have a min of $500k of add ons up to whatever you want to spend

Have you considered using the "port backing" tendancy of a single screw in conjunction with hard right rudder and jockeying ahead then astern while using the thruster to move the bow? The stern will move out to port, headway will be neglible, and the thruster moves the bow inder control.

Very smart to remember which side your get home is on , when docked starboard side to , to help pull you off the dock ! But I would be left wondering when turning them off , did the blades flip back properly ?
@shawnkrenke39492 жыл бұрын
Yes, the centrifugal force causes the prop to open while engaged in gear. Once disengaged from gear the water pressure when making forward way will force the prop closed.
@timeandtideplans2 жыл бұрын
Yay! We’re winter mooring at Point Hudson and the wind at night has been a pretty regular occurrence. Makes me feel better to know a seasoned boater thinks it’s bad too! This is not regular rolly go to sleep wind in a marina - it’s being slammed against the dock 😋 the views, town, and people make up for it! We’ve also gotten more creative with dock lines going in and out of the slip too.

Not trying to be a know it all and there are many ways to dock and leave the dock. But I see a lot left for you to learn on how your lines can be used for assistance so you don’t have to look so rushed all the time in unfavorable conditions, Especially with all that space you have boating out of season. A great time to practice new more advanced techniques. I’m not a big life jacket guy but with all the options today and in that weather I’d wear them on icy docks etc. coming for a guy who road a motorcycle without a helmet for years I’m even surprised I’m saying that. Hello, I am not sure if you folks get questions asked about your choice of vessel vs others that are out there so I thought I would ask you what exactly drove you to select Nordhavn over, say, a Fleming craft? What exactly makes the Nordhavn your preferred craft? I know next to nothing about large boats but am fascinated by y'alls experiences with your boat and really enjoy the blog. We are retiring and thinking about getting a boat on which to live in a cooler clime in order to get out of the hot Texas summers. Thanks, Matobani.

does the wing engine exercise itself like a home generator or does it just hang out until you start it? Does it run your thrusters?
@TrolloTV2 жыл бұрын
It has to be started intentionally, there are no automatic systems on those. Im not sure about their particular boat, but on some Nordhavns they are even built to be completely manual operation and without any electricity. So gravity fed fuel tank, mechanic fuel pump, all of that

I’m interested in learning more about the “wing” engine you have. Does it have its own shaft, prop and transmission?
@shawnkrenke39492 жыл бұрын
It does. Completely separate yanmar engine, shaft, and folding propeller. Our main engine is mounted on the centerline of the boat and exits the keel and the wing engine is offset to the port side by about 3’ and situated just aft of the main
