Have you ever wondered how easy or difficult it is to change the oil and oil filters on a Nordhavn 43? Well, Elizabeth thought it sounded pretty easy so she attempts to change things herself with only a LITTLE help from Shawn. All in all, this 3-step process is pretty easy although not as speedy of a job as she thought.

Shawn ..you have a beautiful setup, let alone wife, that was a great idea installing that oil pump, did you do all the work? that must have been a heaven sent, I didn't know the procedure was so entailed. Material alone, expensive hobby but I'm sure it's worth it, I want to compliment you guys on the cleanliness It looks like you can eat off the floors in that engine room, and that's the way it should be , all mechanical rooms should be battleship grey, clean!

For horizontal or inverted vertical oil filters; after the 'warm up' period; poke a hole in the uppermost portion of the filter. a punch or a simple nail will suffice. This drains the remaining oil 'locked' in the filter to the sump. Then bag the filter and remove. there should be practically no oil remaining to spill. :)

Besides saving money, there's the satisfaction of doing your own mx. Of course, on a boat, it's also an essential safety skill! I've found that an end-cap filter fitting that is turned with a ratchet is invaluable for changing the oil filter on my truck; the filter is in a very tight spot where there's no space for a strap type filter wrench.

I have wanted a Nordhavn for the last 27 years ( I'm 60 now, doesn't seem likely at this point...)! I started with the 46's and now yearn for a 43. This is the coolest Nordhavn video I have ever scene; I feel I can live vicariously through you two. To get to see the maintenance and operation of systems I've only fantasized about is quite a thrill! Thank you so very much for posting this.

I never warm the engine up prior to the oil change. The oil filter won't have oil in it and doesn't make a mess. You get the oil out of the engine at room temperature easily. No need to warm. New subscriber. Love your videos. Another tip....use Dow Compound 4 on the oil filter seal, DC 4 available from Amazon. The seals will never cook onto the engine. We use DC 4 on aircraft engines all the time.

If you ever decide to trade Shawn in for an older, less attractive and not as cool a guy, give me a call. LOL On a serious note I really love the way you guys communicate. Trying to teach someone to do mechanical things like changing the oil can be stressful at best. Hi, i watched your video, glad to see you change your oil yourself. By the way i noticed your Racor fuel filters don t have the required stainless bowls at the bottom. It is a uscg requirement, min case of fire, the stainless shield will protect the plastic bowl from direct heat from a flame. You should be able to buy the stainless shields from a local Parker or West marine store. Kind of surprised Northhavndoesnt install those as standard equipment.

A good idea that all auto manufacturers do is add a magnet to the inside of the oil pan. You can do the same getting a little stronger magnet and attach it to the outside bottom of the oil pan. What can save you are scared cylinder walls. Just a thought.

Good video, especially for us engine guys. I'm surprised you didn't prefill the filter on the main engine, since it's vertical. I assume the John Deere is plain main and rod bearings, so prefilling insures there is no interruption in oil flow while the filter is refilling.

In the grocery business in my dad's stores, the markup had to be 55% minimum in order to make a 30% profit. Of course that includes all the expenses like employee pay, utilities, building, etc. I use to work at an auto garage and material markup was the same. Plus "MISCELLANEOUS" items such as gaskets, screws, cleaning material, trips to get parts, etc. often 5% of the parts bill. (total rip off) Then there was the labor. There was an actual book that shows what time it takes for a good mechanic to do a particular job. Then you take that time to another book and that book will give you cross reference of time vs price you want to set. Those two books will give you the invoice to give to the customer. Back in the 60's we also charged by what the customer wanted. example: We do GOOD work. We do FAST work. We do CHEAP work. THE CUSTOMER GETS TO CHOOSE TWO OF THE ABOVE. THEN WE GET TO CHOOSE THE THIRD. And the owner was serious about it. We could do a FOOD CHEAP job. But it will take a VERY LONG TIME. or We could do a GOOD FAST job. but it is NOT going to be cheap. The owner could have been a multi millionaire, but he was a drunk and would gamble on just about everything.

It makes sense not to use the refill function when you are working with single gallon containers of new oil. The only time it really makes sense to use it is if you are buying the 5 gallon / 20 liter buckets of oil. Though those have the benefit of the empty bucket to use for draining into next time.

" NEXT TIME AROUND" you really need to stop using DELO 400--while its not the worse diesel engine oil out there--the SHELL Rotella 15/40 full synthetic engine oil is sooooooo much better in terms of oil service life, and normal wear on the engine. Yes its kinda pricey up front, but due to the fact that you can get 3-4 times more life between oil changes, then it becomes way cheaper over the life of the engine, and is actually better for all internal engine components since its a known fact that traditional petroleum based oil will "cook" and "adhere" to internal engines parts that for one reason or another don't get lubrication, and will eventually have a build up on internal parts. Contact Lugger, and who ever the engine manufacturer is for the generator, they will probably tell you the same thing!--happy travels
