The fanbase is real in the comments here. Ryo's without any doubt an amazing player and one of the most entertaining players to watch at that. But let us not forget how good RoguePenguin did against him in these sets. I remember him getting bodied by Ryo a few months ago. Now he meets him in GF's, becoming a serious threat to Ryo. I think RoguePenguin is going to surpass him in the long term, given how fast he improved.

Ryo wasn't even at kill percent on his first stock at the end of that first match... Followed by a JV2, and then the reset. He only lost one game, and right after that he pulled another two-stock where he only got to mid percent. Then two comebacks from ~100% behind! Ryo saying, "What the heck was I doing in the Losers Bracket? I do not belong in the Losers bracket. Here's why."

Announcing was the best part of this video. Although Ryo's combos only go about as far as up or down thow (dunno which) to forward air so they were wrong about that little bit. He's just excellent at zoning and spacing with Ike.

The down air to up smash is very old tech. There was a video about it last year showing it true combos at ANY percent. Yes any percent. I've labbed it several times myself. There are certain characters it doesn't work on though. It's either floaties or heavies I can't remember. I'll find the link and post it

Wii U pro controller is PROBABLY more suitable for Bidou button layout, mainly due to the additional shoulder button. It, however, is doable with GC controller as well and if Rogue likes it better, it surely helps him.

+Crying Ocelot what they meant, was that the dthrow to utilt is an easy bake, for glory combo. Good marios will usually be more creative, but when facing good players they will resort to the guaranteed combos as well.

+Jorge Fernandez Smash is much more about just "knowing combos". Also, I implied that I can play more characters as well, not just Mario. Anyhow, everyone can be a good mario. Mario is easy to learn. However, the growth one has as a mario main becomes logarithmic, because his meta is so well developed and defined that his linear playstyle can be exploited.

From what I understand, it requires a pro controller to use and not everyone has access to one, it seems like a lot of what it lets you do often goes against the games intentions, and it wasn't balanced around this tech. I mean it only exists because of a bug, basically. If it wasn't giving people a special advantage, I don't think anyone would ever bother playing with a button layout like that, right?

I don't? I don't have one, and It would mean I'd have to pay to be competitive (there's a pre-1.1.6 bayo joke somewhere there haha) but to be honest the controller wasn't my biggest beef. It's more the exploit-esque nature of it, and I always felt like it was melee's reliance on movement and engine bugs for competitive play that made it a less appealing game in the competitive scene than some other fighting games. Don't get me wrong, I got hundreds of hours of melee in during my teens and I appreciate the game and the pro players skills, but I believe melee was never produced with it's current level of competition in mind, it's a buggy engine. It was really only working on improving on the original smash, not creating the ultimate competitive platform fighting game. I am honestly surprised bidou hasn't been patched out, seems like there's multiple ways to fix it that don't even seem like they'd be that incredibly difficult for them to do.

I know people like melee, I like watching it too :P It's just not a very sensible-looking game when you look at top-level smash matches and compare it to top-level street fighter bouts. Are you certain it won't be necessary to patch bidou? I think it's not popular at the moment because nobody really seems to have been able to overwrite their muscle memory to the new scheme, but with time I feel like the number of players that start pulling off things the other player literally can't do will rise. Plus more applications for bidou do seem to be getting worked out, so it's only getting to be more useful. As far as patching goes, I still doubt they will ever patch it because they don't seem to care all that much about the comp scene. But it's not an engine bug, it's a control issue. From a bloke on reddit, "They could make it that the directional input of having Special mapped onto a stick doesn't fire unless Special isn't currently held down. They could make it that pressing and holding the Special button doesn't count as holding it down if it didn't activate a special when you pressed it. They could make it that pressing another Special button while it's already held down refreshes the input." Any one of those would basically stop bidou from working, they aren't engine overhauls either, they're just tweaks to a single input scheme. I feel like it'd be do-able, but I know they'll never really get around to it anyway so it's not worth worrying about.
