MVMT, got their start 6 years ago, in June of 2013. A brand started by two college-aged guys from Southern California, Jake Kassan and Kramar LaPlante. But amidst their growth from 0 to 100 million dollars in just 5 years, and being acquired by the long-standing player in the industry, Movado, the criticism rose alongside the sales, making them one of the most controversial consumer brands in the world. In this video, we address the controversy head-on, with a trip to MVMT's world headquarters.

Hey guys, I hope you enjoy this video! I decided to re-upload after getting a lot of feedback about the audio and exposure. We published a release date in advance and thought we would have everything perfectly done in time, but we found things taking longer than expected (since truthfully I have never made a video this in-depth, and didn’t realize how much longer it would take). Instead of pushing back the release date we decided to do everything we could to get it out on the promised day. There were some very late nights leading up the release, and in honesty, a lot of the mentioned feedback we didn’t catch from pure sleeplessness. In retrospect, we should have been more thoughtful and particular on saying when we would have it completed. I’ll make sure I learn from this and we are more careful with promised release dates and the audio/video quality moving forward. If you’re curious - we improved the audio and exposure the best we could but it certainly could have been better. I felt this topic deserved to be bigger than just a skype interview, so we traveled to LA on our own dime. We only had one day with the MVMT team and since we spent most of our budget traveling, I could only bring one person to capture everything (operating two camera angles, capturing audio of two people, etc.) so some of the captured audio and video exposure was off from the start since one person was focusing on so many things. Additionally, we had to rent some of the equipment locally in LA, and our team wasn't very familiar with some of the mics we got since our usual mics weren’t available at the local camera rental store. If you have edited video before, which I’m sure a lot of you have, you know there’s only so much you can “do in post” to improve things. Next time, we’ll do better to have the appropriate crew and equipment. As my channel and business grows we plan on producing more and more premium, in-depth content around the world. This has been a great learning experience, and your support means everything and makes it all possible.

Hi Teddy! I think the production of this video was pretty good but I don't really like the bias in the video. I felt that zooming into Jake's face was a poor tactic which clearly shows you're trying to guide the video in a certain direction. I don't think that Jake's reasoning was unwarranted. MVMT watches are not quality. But I would say that they are a good looking watch and that there are watch brands out there, that are just like MVMT but more expensive. I do agree that the pricing has been set by MVMT for maximum profitability and marketing but I don't think MVMT's mission was to be the most affordable, best watch movement brand in the first place. MVMT has never really targeted the watch connoisseur market.

Let me frame it this way. I think I can say with a fair amount of confidence that most people in the watch community will not only buy strictly on quality of the product, but the emotions and connections we make with a particular brand. How many people buy a Royal oak or nautilus not strictly because of the quality of it, but because of the hands it has touched along the way. You can for sure find better quality for cheaper (maybe not many but i'm sure you can) and that isn't even taking into account the crazy after market people pay. So to have this "value" argument with MVMT I think is fair, but I can also understand a person that is trying to make a watch that isn't entirely about the quality of the product, but instead how it makes you feel. Sure in the example of the Timex Weekend compared to a MVMT watch you could say that it is similarly spec'ed and costs double. However if we did that for every single watch, once you start comparing swiss watches to grand seiko's the value prop gets blown wide open. Is the rolex date just over priced in comparison to Grand Seiko with similar date and high beat. You could certainly make that argument. The only difference I feel is that once you've reached that price range of Rolex vs Grand seiko there are more redeeming qualities that you could say well "I bought it for reason X". Where are the lower at here the only reason really results in "It looked nicer" or "It's cooler" (in part thanks to marketing). However I think those are perfectly fine reasons to buy a watch. In short, is the MVMT watch a good value per specification that it offers...No absolutely not. Is a MVMT watch a great watch to get if you can really connect with the story that MVMT is telling... Yes absolutely. These antiquated devices we wear on are wrists are so obsolete it really circles back to kinda being funny again. It really is all about the stories we tell ourselves. Like why is a re-release of the 321 movement from omega a big deal. In fact as far as moving the needle forward in watch making, there is an argument to be made that moves us backwards in creating demand for nostalgia instead of improvements; But it is all about the stories we tell, the memories we make, and the things we appreciate. There really is no wrong watch to pick if you love it.

Hey Teddy, First off, great documentary. Speaking from experience here - a few years ago, I purchased a MVMT as a graduation present for myself once I graduated university. I loved it for a year or so - it seemed to be good value (to someone who really knew nothing about watches). But it did exactly that. It made me start to research watches. It made me find channels like yours and many others and encouraged me to learn about watches and horology and what value in a watch means. My MVMT has since stopped working, and I have purchased a 1967 Omega Seamaster Chronometer that I LOVE. My point is, for better or worse, MVMT was a stepping stone for me into a hobby/interest that I likely otherwise wouldn't have found/couldn't afford to get into at that time in my life.

I can blame the "screen death" of my "Samsung Galaxy Watch Active" for my sudden tangent into starting to collect watches, got a cheap "Boderry Urban" skeletal watch, a nato strap to go with it, and I've really enjoyed wearing it. I've got Orient Commuter on the way now and have my eyes on ordering a Orient "Mini Triton" dive watch, as well as a Gshock that I plan to do just a silly amount of mods to just for fun. Got a Garmin Instinct Solar to replace the fitness tracking the Samsung used to because it's built like a tank and doesn't do the flashy extra junk (and a ligit 12 day battery life so no daily charging), and it's such a utilitarian simple thing with a rubber case on it that I have no shame wearing a second watch on the opposite wrist, something cool on the left, something practical on the right, it's fun

Lots of respect for Teddy for asking questions with unfaltering conviction. Respect for the MVMT guy as well for taking the questions like a champ, being more transparent than I'd expect makes business sense for him, and - for seizing an opportunity all the watch brands we love could have seized but likely felt was beneath them. The overwhelming majority of people looking to buy a watch just want something that looks good, works, and is at a price point they can afford. These guys realize that more than most and have built a business worth hundreds of millions of dollars BECAUSE they've put that insight to work. I'd buy a Casio or an Orient or a Seiko before I bought these guys' stuff, mostly cause these others DON'T position themselves to be something they're not. But I understand that many people find the MVMT watches better LOOKING than those others - and that's what most people care about most.

I got into watches around middle school and started by wearing $8 Walmart watches. After a few years of this my mom got me a MVMT watch for Christmas. It was a big step up for me at the time. I thought it was great and compared to what i had been wearing it fealt like I was wearing a true luxury watch. Slowly I got more into watches and started buying more quality brands Iike Tissot and Bulova. While my MVMT watches fealt cheap and kind of shit after getting more quality watches, I have to give them credit. They make trendy looking watches at a decent price and I think they help guide people into more serious watch collecting

Before saying anything I would like to say that I dont own a mvmt watch . I am not a watch enthusiast by any means. I have just 3 Japanese watches from seiko, orient and casio gshock. Having said that I don't understand why are people hating on mvmt watches ? Maybe because they have nothing to do? How is the price of a commodity set in the market ? Through demand and supply. If people are willing to pay 200plus dollars for mvmt watch then how is that wrong ? As long as there is demand the watch company will keep on supplying the watch. That's not anything to hate about. And the thing about high markup, what's wrong with a high markup ? Is there a limit set by world leaders on what the markup on watches all over the world should be ? I am quite sure that their watches isn't a value for money when you can buy orient and seiko watches but still that's not an illegal thing to do. And the final thing of their excessive marketing, I dont think there is any limit set by world leaders on how a company should market or push its products. You know, I don't have a problem with that. If I was doing a watch startup I'd probably be doing the same thing. I have a cousin who was the guy who went to China to source parts for a well known consumer product you may have owned, which you'd probably say good things about. What I have a problem with is being dishonest about it and using "social influencers" to push it as something amazing. There are plenty of small brands out there that don't pretend to be something they're not, and I have a lot more respect for them, and would probably pay more for them.

She's right you know. This has been blown out of proportion. I'm a watch enthusiast but why are we giving MVMT so much attention anyway? I don't get it. The old man is right, we all have to start somewhere even if it means buying our first watch like MVMT. Hell, I owned a Fossil and did not regret it at all. What we don't realize maybe is that MVMT has a very different market segment and I don't think we belong to that segment. Not everyone cares about "value for money" or the movement whether it's Miyota or ETA. A lot of people care about looks and just telling time. That's it. It is what it is. My friends and family don't care about watches if it's a Seiko or Tissot. Nobody really does that's why I don't bother educating them. I tried a couple of times but they said, "WE DO NOT CARE." Again, this has been blown out of proportion. For me, I don't care and I don't mind that MVMT exists.

My first actual watch (apart from these 20mm SpongeBob watches that I used to have when I was like 5) was a fossil and it got me further into watches. When I bought it, I didn't know a lot about watches and went to the store knowing already I would buy a watch because I really needed and wanted one. I tried a few watches and bought a pretty basic watch for 130€. I like the original design and didn't know any better and I'm fine with the quality. I'll buy my second watch soon, it will be a Seiko srpa25k1 and I can't wait to order it.

Well done Teddy! I was happy to see someone that is respected in the watch community (you) ask MVMT the questions we all had and you didn’t hold back, either. I think that MVMT had the opportunity to show the watch world what makes them different and justifies their price/cost to consumers and “quality” of their watches and they failed to do so. Final Verdict: MVMT make a quality watch if it was priced at $50 or less where the fashion branding is worth the small mark up. As a quality watch it doesn't stand up against other brands at similar prices. If you meet someone with a MVMT watch explain to them that it is just a well marketed cheap Chinese watch and introduce them to a mechanical Seiko 5 which is cheaper and you will have a friend for life.

I'm a headphone enthusiast. Before Beats, $400 headphones were unthinkable to almost everyone. Sennheiser, Audiotechnica, Shure, Beyerdynamic etc. were established but niche brands catering to audiophiles or studios. Beats came out and were reviled, but then the aforementioned brands started coming out with their own fashion oriented headphones to compete. This was a gateway drug for many people including myself. In highschool I wanted either Beats or Bose. Then I started researching and bought some Senns instead. Now I am able to say I have heard almost everything, from the cheapest no-brand earbuds up to Focal Utopias and even the Orpheus and I've never owned Beats. If Beats weren't around I don't know if I would have considered even entering this hobby. Tyll Herstens, the Godfather of headphones has a similar opinion: Beats were a necessary evil that revitalized the whole headphone industry and turned it into the thriving behemoth it is today. I think MVMT, Daniel Wellington, etc. are the same thing for the watch industry. (Non Smart)Watches are normally viewed as a) cheap bracelets or b) extremely expensive bracelets. These guys are in between. Yes, many people will buy one of their products and stick to it. But others will buy it then look for a sidegrade or an upgrade... and boy, are they in for a treat when they find out what they've been missing.

Man Teddy is no Joke! Not a single flinch, stutter. Straight forward questions. And dam good facts to back those questions. No escape at all... But respect for MVMT for saying YES to this. I have no hate for MVMT. Because of them I fell in love with watches and started to build a passion for it. Which lead me to appreciate the real watches and the craftsmanship behind it. 2 years after buying a MVMT, I was looking at Seikos, Orients, Tissot (affordable good automatics). I will say I agree that these watch companies should exist. I don’t like their products and I’m not a fan of any company that makes a cheap thing look expensive; but when I see things like MVMT I think of my dad. Growing up, my dad always bought Fossil watches. They were junk, but my dad loved wearing a watch and he didn’t want to spend reasonable money on a good watch. But it fed his desire to wear a watch. When I entered my 20s and graduated college, he was desperate to get me to wear a watch. He felt that a real professional wore a watch. He would buy me Fossil after Fossil, each one getting regretted. And then he’d wear it rather than return it. When I was making enough to buy a nicer watch, I decided instead to introduce my dad to a nicer watch first. I bought him a Citizen Air Diver Titanium from a Japanese market place. When I gave him the watch it looked like he was having a seizure. The next day he threw away every Fossil watch he owned. But his eyes were open. About a year later he bought his first Rolex Submariner...which is resting on my wrist now. Then he bought 3 more Rolex’s. MVMT is that gateway drug for some people. People who may otherwise have never worn a watch. And when some of those people have the money, they might buy a nicer watch. And through that, the watch industry will grow and good watch companies will have a larger market to sell to and they will do better as companies. And I’m cool with that.

Benjamin Gibson Teddy’s point is that yes, these are entry level watches, but they’re not priced as such. They’re too expensive to truly be entry level. People are paying too much for them. They’re using marketing to convince consumers that the watches are cool, and to not notice how poorly made they are for the price. Timex, Seiko, Citizen, and others at lower price points are better made, will last longer, and look just as good.

Fossil, maybe. But MVMT? These people doesnt give one shit about watches and heritage. People who pulled the trigger on MVMT, more often then none, werent opened to the watch world later on. Teddy, thank you for a well filmed documentary about MVMT. To be 100% honest, I almost fell for their marketing hype and purchased one. There are some of their styles that I like, and at the time I didn't know enough about horology to understand what a watch at their price point represented. At the end of the day, value for money is very subjective. As is evidenced by MVMT's customer base, plenty of people believe they're getting value for their money. That means a watch that works, looks good, and is considerably less expensive than an Apple watch (which I would guess is a large target market for MVMT). MVMT's target market is not the seasoned watch collector. I do agree that someone who buys a MVMT watch could evolve into that seasoned watch collector, however, I don't believe that is MVMT's intent. They just want to sell watches. It would be interesting to know how many customers are repeat customers. Also, knowing we live in a capitalistic, free market society, nobody is holding a gun to the heads of consumers and forcing them to buy MVMT watches. Good marketing is clearly used to sell their product, and they're very successful in their marketing strategies. What MVMT is offering to potential customers isn't too much different than what ultra-low cost airlines offer versus the top level airlines. For that matter, it's not too different from what Korean car companies offer versus BMW, Merc, Porsche, Jag, etc. Marketing is all about drawing consumers to your brand. Perhaps the question to be asked is, "are they deceiving their customers in any way?", or "are they running a shady operation that puts out an unreliable product?" I think if I spend $100-$200 on a quartz-based watch, I'd expect it to last until the battery dies. If MVMT watches don't last as long as the battery does, then they're running a shady operation, IMHO. I think that's a part of the documentary that is missing; how reliable are their watches? How long should a customer expect their watch to last? That's where value for money goes from being subjective to being objective. Also, many in the millennial generation don't necessarily buy products to keep long-term. Almost all products are simply discarded when they fail, and a replacement is purchased. I'm sure if you asked a MVMT customer what they'll do if their watch fails, they'll say they'll just buy another one. As always, great content, and I look forward to more of your videos.

I just got a Tissot Chrono, swiss made for $450 AUD. The watch is absolutely beautiful. This cannot be compared to a $250 AUD mvmt in any way. Save a little more and get something that is really worth you money.

I do believe that at the beginning, at the very least, they were selling premade watches with their logo put on. However, I have to agree with what Jean Claude said, since I am one of the very people he is talking about. My first watch after many years of going without one, using my phone instead, was, indeed, an MVMT. I actually bought two more style watches before I started to get more interested and started collecting real watches. Now those first three watches are gone, and I have nine better quality pieces, with more to come.

The point about brands like MVMT being the entry point to watch collecting is very true. I wasn’t interested in watches at all before MVMT’s marketing was so prominent, and partly because of them, I’m really into watches now. Luckily I was smart enough to do my research before buying, so I ended up with a seiko 5 for my first watch, but I do have to give MVMT some credit for getting me into watches.
