This was the 32 valve V8 era and each are well deserving to own. My top favorite is the Cadillac as I grew up with a 1995 Seville and was a wonderful car. The performance is unbelievable as well as the ride and handling. If this comparison test came out in 1995, the new Lincoln Continental would have been included and would be my second choice. But to be clear, any of these cars as excellent in their own ways. For 1995 and on : 1. Cadillac Seville STS 2. Lincoln Continental 3. Lexus LS 400 4. BMW 740i 5. Mercedes 400E 6. Infiniti Q45 7. Audi V8

I was astonished with the atrocious body roll exhibited by the Lexus and Infinity... yet the Cadillac seemed to do quite well in comparison. This was quite a surprise; I would have really expected the opposite.

I've driven every car on the list except the INFINITI. The BMW is way too expensive to maintain here in the states. I prefer the Cadillac in every way but the Northstar engine can't be trusted. That leaves the Lexus,it's a spectacular car. It's comfy, reliable, and quite handsome. The Lincoln Town Car is my favorite, it's too bad they did not include it.
@starxlr78638 жыл бұрын
+Scott Witkowski Ahhhh yes the Northstar V8 can very well be trusted and is an extremely reliable engine. My family has always had one as well as several other people that I know and they are excellent!

It's too bad the Northstar engines had such horrific reliability problems, they looked so good on paper.
@starxlr78639 жыл бұрын
+0utc4st1985 Only when not maintained properly!! Plain and simple. And the same goes for any other engine. They are excellent engines and very well built.
@0utc4st19859 жыл бұрын
AMCNorthstar 93 High rates of head gasket failure are not caused by maintenance issues, it's a design problem. That's why you only see it with specific engines like the Northstar, the 4.1L HT4100, and several modern Subaru engines.
@starxlr78639 жыл бұрын
@105247556663630771629 Wrong. I have been around these cars all my life and worked on several GM vehicles including Cadillac. It is a coolant issue and that's how it starts. The coolant intervals are very important. The coolant turns acidic and does eat away at the head gasket itself and other gaskets in any other engine.
@0utc4st19859 жыл бұрын
Then how come the Chevy engines never had this problem? How about the Buick engines? They all used the same coolant, why is it the Northstar had more of a problem? Furthermore that coolant wasn't even around in the 80's, why did the 4.1L HT4100 also have this problem?
@0utc4st19859 жыл бұрын
I'll also point out that this problem was fixed with a redesign in 2000, the fix was bolt sleeve inserts which proves that problem actually was a design problem and had nothing to do with the coolant.

+Eric Haley I had no problems too. Perhaps people forget to add oil to the engine between the actual oilchanges (I have to add a quart every 2000 miles or so). Or they baby the car. It can be useful for the engine to make full-trottle-accelerations once in a while (the engine collects some dirt with time which gets out after some harder accelerations....Of course you don't do this with a cold engine. Wait for it to warm up properly.)

CADILLAC IS THE BEST!!!! The Cadillac is truely and impressive car. The power, performance, handling and quality of the Seville has won me over from these other models. I already owned two lexus ls400s and they were full of problems and cheap parts. not to mention a bland looking car and can easily mistaken it for a mercedes or something similar. I dont care what people speak about the lexus cars but they are NOT the best cars ever built!! Just over priced, boring looking toyotas! And the 32V Northstar will leave the lexus way behind in the dust and has the best sounding engine in this group.

I'm surprised at the STS performance, it's pretty shocking to see that is was 0.5 seconds faster than its closest competitor. If the STS was rear wheel drive or AWD cadillac would have been a lot more competitive in the late 80s and 90s. Ever one knows that FWD is for peasants and people who don't know anything about cars. Acura is paying the price right now for not building a v8 and a RWD platform.
@ossimjew10 жыл бұрын
I have a newer rwd STS and it is an absolute blast and the engine is far better than the German competition. I have a 5 second 0-60 on my channel of it.
@wutang80oc3910 жыл бұрын
The newer RWD Caddillacs are nice, it's just a shame that these old STS's are FWD, they are really comfortable and I like they way they look. They are much better looking than the E-class and 5series of their time. The 1992 STS has a pretty modern look to them and the Northstar versions have good straight line performance.
@ossimjew10 жыл бұрын
Kelvin Wu The newer one is less comfortable the suspension is much firmer from it being the magnetic ride control. 90's german cars looked awful I agree, I don't see the hype with them (especially the e30 m3 overrated). While the northstar engine is one of the most underrated engines of all time, if they only had good head gaskets and did not drink oil like a semi, the engine would be perfect.
@starxlr78639 жыл бұрын
+drmario05 These older Seville's are still great performers and I really don't see anything wrong with FWD. That's what makes it nice to have some different variety and most GM cars at the time were FWD. I drive one everyday and I wouldn't give it up for anything else. Only the Lincoln Continental for 1995-02 would be my second choice. They are very comfortable and handle great for various kinds of driving.

Brother used to have a 99 STS even though I told him repeatedly to get a Lexus Ls. Comfortable and pretty good acceleration but was a money pit to the point my parents had enough and wouldn't spent anymore. Complete POS in many many ways yet had under 100000 miles. Don't buy one unless you love spending Lotta of money on repairs. The Cadillac that made me never want to buy one ever. EVER!!
@starxlr78639 жыл бұрын
+Itheman123456789 If these cars are maintained properly, they wouldn't need repaired often. Just because you had maybe a bad one doesn't mean the rest are bad. Maintenance is everything and can also happen on the others cars including Lexus.
@Itheman1234567899 жыл бұрын
+AMCNorthstar 93 " If these cars are maintained properly, they wouldn't need repaired often." Only problem with that saying is it doesnt apply to all cars and the sts is no exception. There dirt cheap for a reason. The northstar engine in them is a design defect and r notorious for headgasket failures coolant issues and many expensive breaking every month. Maintenence is a nightmare and expensive and the interior build quality and fit & finish is horrible. Even my Lincoln Ls feels Toyota like solid and reliable compared to that junkyard on wheels. If your saying the sts is reliable, then I feel sorry for what else you own cause they must be complete POSs.

+AMCNorthstar 93 A lexus ls however is a much much MUCH better built vehicle than the sts.

@Itheman1234567899 жыл бұрын
+AMCNorthstar 93 You should come back to reality. Like them all you want but it doesnt change the fact their unreliable and have a bad rep. That model ruined Cadillac's reputation to this date and those Northstar engines were regarded to be one of the worst engines Cadillac have had. Spending hundreds to fix that hoopty just to keep it on the road unlike the Lexus plus the gasket issues was in fact a bad design and bad coolant made them fail sooner. All sts even with low miles are dirt cheap because their mechanical nightmares and fall apart, from interior bits and pieces to air bag suspensions to many engine problems. Almost impossible even get past 200000 miles even with maintenence unless spending thousands in repairs, which the Lexus Ls it's just strectin it's legs and retails much more at the same time, let alone a similiar year Ls in good condition and low miles would fetch well over 9000 probably higher. Most other GM cars in 1999 dont even compare in unreliability to it, it was really bad. You can like them how much you want and may be pretty nice but dont lie to yourself that that sts is reliable quality.
