MW3 In Depth - Silencers & Range Proficiency (w/ MOAB!)

In this episode of In Depth I cover all of the effects of Silencers in Modern Warfare 3. First up the muzzle flash is covered with side by side screenshot examples. Then I took Pass The Pi and I am Scrotus from Twitter, made them stand back to back, shoot some guns with or without silencers, and measured the dB level in Sony Vegas. Remember that perceived loudness and decibel outputs are linear, the actual loudness reduction was calculated. Then there is a segment on wall penetration and damage effects. Lastly, I spent a lot of time talking about exactly how much the suppressors reduce range. They nick range by 25% but that 25% is based off the the weapons maximum range. Two examples are shown the in video. Oh yeah, then after dropping the MOAB on Bakarra with an MK14 I take about a minute to discuss the Range proficiency.

Yup. The 25% is based off the max range. Lets look at the MP5 for example which has a damage drop range of 600-800. You put a silencer on and the range is reduced by 800*0.25 = 200. So the new range is (600-200) to (800-200) or 400-600. I think it's kind of crazy too but that's how it works. Silencers punish weapons with big gaps in their damage drops and don't effect narrow gap weapons as much.

an interesting thing to note, simply because some may wonder if on certain weapons you dont want a silencer like the mk14 because of reduction/etc at long range, well one as far as ive seen you get range proficiency from specialist, so get 7-8 kills and that almost nulls your silencer. but more important in mw3 especially most maps are close quarters, and you likely wont notice much of a range reduction.

Suppressors only muffle the sound of the of the explosion inside your weapon and reduce muzzle flash. There is still a secondary bang from the bullet breaking the sound barrier, a supersonic crack. There are subsonic rounds available for any standard round size, these rounds do not travel fast enough to break the sound barrier and hence don't make the crack. If you combine these rounds with a suppressor the weapon is much quieter, you only hear the bolt action.

I hate it when people say that. camping is sitting in a corner, patrolling an area is staying in one general area, and defending it. There's a difference. I can't expect to rush with an LMG, and get 24 straight kills without dying.

If you don't allow for the crosshairs to meet up, your sniper bullet tends not to go where you want it to go. For example, aim for the head, hit the legs or something because the aim isn't fully centered until you're seeing through the scope.

The hot gasses coming out makes the flight of the bullet more stable, while the silencer prevents the gasses coming out just to make a clearer view of your sight and sound reduce.

You shoud definitely do a video about the thermal attachment and its affect on all guns. For example, thermal and grip on LMGs make them extremely accurate and the PP90M1 is a litte more accurate than usual and has quickdraw built in.

I'm the rare guy that uses it mostly for the reduced muzzle flare and reduced sound. The sound thing is a much bigger factor on the consoles since a lot of people have integrated speakers that don't complicate sound. The staying off the map thing in my bonus :)

Ay Drift, I think another useful information you could tell is which gun could have no damage/range penalty/decreased when you combine range prof and silencer together.

The 6% drop is because you take off 25% of the big number, then add 25% of what is left, so you get a little bit less. e.g 1600 - 25%(400) = 1200 then 1200 + 25%(300) = 1500. that's why it drops a little bit.

Actually on dark maps the muzzle flash often gives the enemies away for me, so I always use a suppressor on dark maps to be the most invisible ninja type guy I can be.

the reason there is that 6% decrease is because they way percentage increases and decreases work 100 +25 = 125% than the -25 % is 25 % of 125, so 100 +- 25% 93.75 % (6.25 % decrease, roughly 6%) of initial range, the result is the same if you decrease first.

Yes but they come with double exp for the whole team and an emp effect, so, really it helps your team a lot more than a few care packages. Kill wise you get more, but the overall xp of the MOAB would overwrite that.

They take 25% of the Damage Drop End for the reduction in the Damage Drop Start, not 25% of itself. It's really messed up that way, because the Damage Drop Start can be reduced much more than 25%.

Suppressor: Used for fully-auto weapons, as you can't silence a gun that causes an explosion twice every second. Silencer: Used on pistols; Low-caliber explosions within the gun makes it easier. Silencers are gov't issue though, it's EXTREMELY hard to get a silencer, not even normal military has it. Suppressors are available for pistols though.

Yeah I used the XM25 to measure the range on shotguns with silencers vs without. The Striker is about even but the SPAS-12 loses about 2 meters with silencer+range over non silenced.

It only really affects the MK-14,the MK-14 shoots slower with a silencer for balance reasons.It might just feel like weapons are slower because of the time to kill is a little slower at range or the sound might be a little slower.

Well technically, the suppressor does affect the MK14, but not practically, it still kills in 2 shots at short-medium range, and 3 at long range :) Also, it's not so much about others hearing your suppressed gun, but that it's much harder for them to hear where the gun is firing from :)

Not trying to sound like a smartass ou anything, but I searched on google and found that silencers and suppressors aren't the same thing. While a silencer only silences the shots of the gun, a suppressor does the same job but it also reduces or removes flash muzzle, which a silencer doesn't.

You get them all, except for the damage proficiency. You will only get the pro perk benefit for the perks you unlocked to pro.

The reduction with range is because the silencer effect is applied first 100*.75 is 75 then they factor in range 75*1.25 is 93.75, a 6.25% drop in range over all :/

yep, its multiplicative so if you take 75% of a gun with the range proficiency (currently at 125%) you get 93.75% the original range
