Mwana, Murera's Miracle Baby

The birth of Murera's baby is extra, extra special after the horrendous injuries she suffered prompting her rescue, as a tiny baby by SWT. The love, the months of around the clock care, never giving up on this precious baby girl and re establishing wonderful Elephant habitat for compromised Elephants to safely return to the wild is gob smacking. To SWT and all the Keepers who always go the extra yard for 'their babies' as they grow and choose to go back to the Wild -- CONGRATULATIONS !!!! Hearts are warming all over the world. I bet there has never been an Elephant so trusting that she happily just stood there to be milked. The men in Green Rock !!!!!💓🐘

Wow, this is a first for me seeing an elephant "milked" like a cow. Really sweet how they trust their caeegivers. I have been following DSW for 3 or so years watched all videos I could find and I do not remember seeing a video on the rescue of this MaMa ellie.

On reading Murera gave birth, I emitted a shriek followed by tears. I am so happy for Murera, the Umani Springs herd, her keepers, and SWT. Since first learning about SWT Murera became my heart ❤️ rescue girl and I adopted her. I am thrilled little Mwana is starting out life with a loving extended family and will look forward to the keepers monthly daily notes to keep up with Murera and Mwana’s progress.

The website article linked in the video description said that nursing "clicked" for Murera on the 11th day, and that Mwana seamlessly shifted from mommy's milk in a bottle to nursing from mommy herself. :)

I got to meet Murera last October on a tour of the Sheldrick integration sites. The keepers had a strong suspicion that she was pregnant. God bless SWT and their wildlife charges one and all. ❤

I am so happy for Murera and all at Umani. I know it was the keepers’ desire to have a grand baby out of Murera one day, but they feared if her hips could bear a bull’s weight. I love that the keepers showed/taught Murera how to let the baby feed. Elephants, just like humans, are not born knowing how to do everything and after Mama's traumatic start in life, it's not surprising that she didn't know how to feed the baby. That said, she figured out, after having the keepers milk her, what was supposed to happen, so it did. Remarkable!!

So amazing!!! I give everything in my life for DSWT!!! They are amazing. They started out the year of my birth. I am truly grateful to see baby elephants 🐘 have a safe place to go when they have been misplaced or other means. I surely love baby elephants 🐘. I am so eager to get to get close to a baby elephant or even an elephant to give them loves as they are definitely my favorite animal ever. Thank you DSWT for EVERYTHING YOU DO!!!!! I’m so happy to see that the keepers seen how the baby couldn’t reach the mom nipple to drink and came to the rescue. That was the thing I noticed about the little one. Thanks to all the keepers for working so hard for the Ellie’s 😘🥰🥰🐘🐘🐘🐘

It wasn't that the baby couldn't reach, but that Murera wouldn't let her baby nurse for the first 10 days, that she would walk away, but she let the keepers milk her, then they bottle-fed the baby Murera's milk, then on day 11, nursing "clicked" in Murera's understanding and she let Mwana nurse from then on >> as described in the website's article that they linked in the video description, a wonderful little article!

Perhaps Murera didn't understand about nursing because she hasn't been part of a natural herd so she never got to be an allowmother and comfort nurse a calf and watch mothers nurse their calves. Sometimes instinct can only take you so far.

Years ago I watched a you tube video of one of the keepers at Umani Springs. This incredible man said that it would mean so much to him if one day, there was a baby, but he knew it would be a big ask. I am not sure if he was referring to Murera specifically but I am thrilled for him. Umani Springs is a magical place!
