At 6am this morning, 7th October 2021, we were filming at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, so that we could bring our supporters a 'pseudo live' from this remote area in Tsavo East National Park.
Kirsty joins Head Keeper Benjamin and together they introduce us to some of the 32 dependent orphans at Ithumba, as well as Mutara, a now wild-living orphan who's popped back to visit with her herd. It's a wonderful insight into what mornings look like in Ithumba, we hope you enjoy it.
You can read more about all of the Ithumba orphans at sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/it...
------------------------------
Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Sheldrick Trust - PLEASE have more of these longer length vids of Ithumba, Voi and Umani Springs units showing daily life and activities of dependent orphans, semi-dependent, wild living ex-orphans & wild elephants. It's wonderful to see the elles growing up, interacting with their wild friends / kins, and eventually living wild again. It's lovely to see their deep & caring relationship with Benjamin and the other keepers, coming back to see them as well as the younger dependent orphans. It's family at its best!

Second that. Our nursery babies grow up and move up, so we don't get to see them much any more. Thanks much for this segment, and please do more from all your facilities. In your spare time! LOL

Absolutely. It's great to be able to see the everyday routines, the facilities, how it all works. It encourages us to donate when you can see the scale of the place and how many mouths you have to feed. Thanks again for doing this amazing work.

@@Gooberwalla I agree. Also to add my 2 cents even though no one asked for it but possibly some subtitles. The accents are all quite lovely but I have trouble understanding what is said especially if they don’t speak loudly . I know that’s a lot to ask. Sorry. Just trying to help y’all promote yourself as the very best and encourage more donations. Love to all the 🐘🐘🐘 and the humans that care for them.

Excellent video. Question: When and how do the orphans integrate and interact with the wild adult elephants? Also I would love to see some videos on herd dynamics. There is a channel that follows rhesus macaque troops in Hong Kong. It was fascinating to learn how the monkey troops work and how certain individual macaques would join and leave various troops. Would love to know how elephant herds work internally and with each other.

Thx World Girl. We actually filmed this both portrait and landscape, however, the quality of the landscape footage was less impactful. It's also something of a catch 22, as for our Instagram and Facebook accounts, portrait videos can and do perform very well, as for those on mobile devices the footage fills the screen.

It seems sad and painful, but I am glad they are still here and thriving beautifully. EXCELLENT ORG. GREAT WORK!!

It's also easier for us to make out Benjamin's answers when the questions/commentary don't overlap Benjamin's quiet answers, answers we so appreciate hearing. When 2 people are speaking at the same time, it makes it so tough to hear, also when Benjamin is turned away from the mic. Please, thank you for keeping these realities in mind. Splendid video. Thank you. Question. Is 12 a young age for pregnancy?
@cacatr4495
@cacatr4495 2 жыл бұрын
12 is not young for pregnancy under thriving conditions, as their physical development and sexual maturation completely depends on the conditions of their environment. An excellent in-depth biological study was done at an elephant orphanage in Sri Lanka, where they found that under thriving conditions, good, ongoing access to food, with peace and without undue stress, some female elephants began their cycle as young as 3 years old. I answered this question in greater depth in a comment-thread here begun by commenter "Lineage First." (See a lot more detail there.)
