@@MWAWoodworksas I mentioned in detail in a main comment out in the comment section, it did a very good job. You made some good points but as a whole, I agree with the chatbot more than I agree with you about the combo square and the hammer. And I don’t typically toot my own horn but I am a professional in this area at least as much as you are. My point is, every professional will have their own opinions and in this case I disagree with two of yours.

I was intrigued by this video, so I did a similar search and asked for a $1000 limit, which is quite common for beginner woodworkers. The main difference was the recommendation for a jobsite table saw, miter saw, a router and a coreless drill. I wasn't recommended a circular saw, which I think is almost a must in my small shop. Chatbot went with a Dewalt random orbital sander, which I would be ok with. I also received recommendations for clamps, safety gear, and some additional hand tools, which I really appreciated. What I found interesting is that the mallet recommendation I received was for a 3lb sledgehammer, which tells me that chatbots are not good at knowing the difference between a mallet and a hammer. I feel like every woodworker should have at least a $10 hammer in their shop, but I honest can't think of a good use for a sledgehammer. If you have to use one, you are probably not a good woodworker.

The AI bot thinks DIY=carpentry=woodworking. 30 minutes of surfing KZbin would have provided a better list than the bot. My advice for first tools for newbies is to go table saw and router...you can do a boatload of work with those two items. Buy the best you can afford. After that, I would add in clamps, sander and chisels. Also...most critical before spending a dollar on tools is actually having a place you can do work and set up a bench or work table of some kind.

Thank you for making all your videos. We are currently starting to sell off our trucking company and plan to retire. Along with friends and family, we have built houses in the past. But never any fine wood work. So I'll be starting out utilizing my 10" Dewalt rack and pinion contractors saw along with a track saw to make cabinets for our garage/wood shop. So far, you have the most instructive videos I've found. As a thank you and as of today, we purchased about twelve items from your Amazon linked store. We hope this helps. Though the flat measuring tape had changed. We elected to pick up the Hart flat tape. Thank you for your help. We appreciate it. Hopefully we will start on our cabinets in about 45 days.

Ok I’ve already commented but I’m going to put my professional opinion in here because … I am what you might call a professional (a few red blooded Americans might get that reference). All 5 of the chatbot’s recommendations were good. The circular saw is solid. I agree with your comments about battery saws but a beginning woodworker might not want to spend the money on batteries etc. yet, and choosing a brand can be daunting for a beginner. The combination square is fine. I have had to true up various squares over the years, including some of my more expensive ones. I wouldn’t trust any square to be true from the shop and surprisingly, in my experience, some of the most accurate squares from the shop were actually cheaper ones. Buy a square, check it and adjust it if needed. Combination squares are easy to adjust and get precisely accurate. The hammer is a solid recommendation for a beginner. Yes, it’s more for construction work but it’s only a tiny little 16 ounce hammer that’ll be fine for a beginner to use in the workshop as they start learning the basics. I still use my steel hammers far more than any mallets, just because that’s what I do. I agree with you regarding the chisels although for a beginner woodworker, a much cheaper set of Stanley or Bahco chisels will absolutely get the job done - and well. They’re made of perfectly decent steel and even if they do need slightly more regular sharpening, the practice at the whetstone won’t be wasted on a beginner. And finally, the sander. I can’t argue with that either. Any of the bigger brands would suffice: Makita, Dewalt, Bosch etc., a 5 inch random orbital sander from any of them will last the test of time and do a good job in a comfortable manner. As for your comments about dust collection … yeah you’re right. That’s one thing that I’m aware of and after I don’t know how many years of woodworking, my shop vac still sits in the corner covered in dust and virtually unused. My bad.

Interesting exercise. The AI did a lot better than I thought it would. Especially considering for someone "brand new" to woodworking, picking only 5 tools as the "best" to get started with is an extremely challenging exercise. Hard to imagine any functioning person interested in woodworking doesn't already own a common hammer, and I'd argue a speed square would be more useful with circular saw use. That said, I have a set of Narex chisels, the same DeWalt corded circular saw, and the same Bosch sander ... all purchased years ago. Which begs the question - is AI really necessary? lol

First of all love the video. Secondly, its interesting that you dont like the hammer recommendation because you dont use one and use a nail gun instead but the beginner woodworker might not have the money to get an air compressor and nail gun. It was only recently that I was able to get my hands on a compressor from a friend for a decent price and all he had were framing guns. So I still need to buy nail guns. Just thinking it wasnt as bad a recommendation as you made it sound. But thats just me

Block Plane: Stanley 12-139 Bailey No.60-1/2: This block plane is a solid choice, known for its durability and precision. It has an adjustable mouth and performs well for various woodworking tasks. The assumption is that a complete beginner would not be capable of making that decision. They simply don't know what to buy. They can use Google to find sites/videos that provide recommendations and then spend a couple of hours trying to work out which recommendations are best for them, or they can spend 2 minutes getting AI to do it for them. In this case, the AI has done a passable job, but probably not good enough.

I’m giving the Bot a pass on everything but the hammer and the chisels. Woodworkers glue and screw, so unless you are breaking down pallets for wood, a claw hammer is unnecessary. A beginner woodworker does not have an absolute NEED for chisels. Instead, I would go for a drill driver (glue and SCREW) and a 12’ or 16’ tape measure. Then again, I can’t believe clamps didn’t make the list either. 😮😊 Great video!

Ahh, if it's your first 5 tools, I don't think you have either a nail gun or a wooden mallet. Having built several homes and going to a teck school in the 60's you can build a he'll of a lot of wood working projects with the suggested items. But for me no 5 would have been a tape measure. Taking my boots off to measure 5 feet doesn't work with metric. Also being your first 5 tools implies low skill measure, thus cheap multi angle square is good. Particularly as there was no budget. Seems you needed to make up reasons to call the choices 'whiffs'. It recommended a combination square and you were unhappy with the brand selected. You admit that it picked a hammer (which is required for the chisels) but you didn't like *that* hammer. Did you give it a budget? Did you specify that you were exclusively doing woodworking and define what that term means to you? The LLMs are only as good as the context with which they are presented.

Yep in the very beginning of the video I told it I was a NEW woodworker and told it to give me specific tool recommendations. Well, this story is arbitrary and the result totally non-conclusive: what would YOU recommend as my FIRST 5 tools for a new woodworking shop? At least the bot recommended a hammer for the chisels but that went uncommented, but then this may be a coincidence …

I actually agreed that the circ saw, sander, and combo square were all good first tools to be on the list. Maybe that wasn't clear. Also you'd never use a hammer like that one on a chisel. That's why I explained the use of mallets in a workshop! Thanks for watching!

@OliverReinhard Жыл бұрын
Thanks for getting back on my points! I fully agree on the hammer and you also made this very clear in your video. What I meant to say is that the bot was "smart" enough to include something WITH the chisels to apply more force. This is most likely due to the fact that texts used to train the bot use chisel and hammer together in the same contexts. Knowing only text, current chat bots have no notion of what a chisel and a hammer even is. 😮

Every square should be checked for accuracy before use and if it isn’t square, it needs to be trued up. I’ve trued several combo squares over the years, it’s easy and quick. You just need a flat needle file and 5 minutes of patience. Most types of squares can be trued up using a variety of techniques, check out how to true your particular square by searching on KZbin.
