HG makes decent stuff..they have come a long way..pretty nice to get parts from them. I'm deffently getting one of these for my hermes 2. I have some HG 2879c's in a amp and they run good. I like this has swr protection at 2.5 and not lower like other amps.

Interesting harmonic suppression scheme used here. Just use choose a device and operate it at it's limits of bandwidth😜 I would not consider the lack of auto band switching a minor inconvenience. Far too many Amps have been damaged for want of correct band selection or protection. Band selection using Yaesu BCD is a no brainer to implement, add a $10 microcontroller would easily perform Icom 8V analogue to Yaesu BCD band selection as well as providing SWR and over volt/current protection and you have a solution for 75% of the radios market.

My 100W Dummy Load will take 200W for @10~15 secs, (on label) Pretty sure yours will, easily long enough to test with up to 10W Drive.

Seven minutes before you took it apart Matt. We want to see inside first :) Transistors don't really matter as long as rated for the job. From the hefty biasing, they may be Bipolar, 2SC2290 or similar.

I have a somewhat irrelevant question for you. Have you had your hands on the Wolf RS-998 transceiver? 0-750 MHz rx, 0-200 MHz + UHF by frequency conversion tx (locked to HAM bands), 100W output. I'd say it's a base station that can be used as a mobile radio but not really as a portable due to the weight (5.55 kg). It would be nice to see a thorough test of the Wolf.

Wow, for not much more, you can get a VK3AMP that has 1000w output with a 5w drive. Built in Australia, not china.

It depends if you need an ATU. The MX-P150 is a great amp, and so is the 125b, but the 125b costs more and has an internal ATU. The 125b can also be controlled remotely to change bands (not tune though). Again, the 125b costs more those reasons I believe. Both great amps and I have both.

For the price they should have included a stand-by switch, BPF for the WARC bands and automatic band switching. I'll pass on this one.

I agree on the auto-band, considering the LPF is relay controlled it would only require minor reworking to add it. WARC bands usually just use the next band anyway unless it's a real BPF, which this is not, so I find that to be less of an issue considering on an amp having harmonics suppressed is the important part.

The cheapest 400W 12V HF amp is the Ameritron ALS-500 which sells for $1200.

No you don’t. There are many 400W amplifier designs using two matched pairs of 12V transistors in push-pull configuration. Ameritron, SGC, Harris, RM Italy, Tokyo Hy-Power, have all made these.
