►It's called the R28 mod , very easy mod just cut off one side of the R28 feedback resistor and you're good to go! or you can install a switch to go back stock whenever you want.
This is how Eddie Van Halen "spiced up" his legendary Lead sound, especially on the early records. This can clearly be heard in his parade solo on "eruption".

I saw a video where someone said a Mxr Tech showed Mr. VH a prototype with a switch: He should test the phaser fx (Logo Scrpit/Modern) and keep only one, but He said: "Why you don't let the idea go into production ?. It's a great idea to keep both !". That is how the new MXR VH Phaser hit the market.

The center lug is always connected. In one position, the center lug (wire) is connected to the other wire, so the resistor is connected to the board and you get the block (modern) Phase sound. In the other position the center wire is connected to the empty lug, so the resistor is not connected to the board and you get the script (vintage) sound.

I'm trying to do this mod and am having a tough time getting it to work. One mode works (i think script) and the other doesn't. I bought the mod from Stewmac and got black and white push back wire and set it up exactly as they said. I'm lost now. Any help possibly?

I will be making a video showing this mod at some point. You need to desolder the resistor leg closest to the 1/4" jack. You're black wire (like his red wire) goes to the center lug of the switch to the desoldered resistor. Your white wire then goes from the end lug on your toggle to the board.

Just so I have this correct...I can just cut the connection on one side of the R28 resistor and leave it in the pedal hanging by one side? That’s simply the mod-minus the switch?

Hello, yes you can do that. Just clip one side without desolderig anything.. and you will have the pedal in script mode..

Usually 3 pin mean that the switch has 3 positions ON-OFF-ON (UP-CENTER-DOWN) which is not really useful for this mod.. you only need ON-OFF (UP-DOWN), subscribe if you find this content useful I really appreciate 😊

It's an SPDT (single pole-double throw) toggle switch. The mounting hole is either 6mm or 6.3mm, sometimes even 6.5mm depending on the manufacturer. Most manufacturers use 6mm, Carling uses 6.3mm. Use calipers to measure exactly if you can't find the specs.

I'm liking the stock sound better than the mod... Has the GRIT! Mod sounds like a blanket was thrown over everything. Dull and lifeless. Why not just buy an EVH Phase 90 and have the 2 choices of script or block letter tones? Or just buy a Scipt logo P90? But if you like tinkering...

Couldn't agree less... The stock block grit just sounds ugly and harsh... The mod makes everything sound clearer (the opposite of blanket)

Could not agree more... sounds to weak with mod, i can probably find better place in signal chain for 90 rather than mod it.
