Totally agreed with the phaser before dirt. When I put them after dirt they sound really over the top and domineering. Put them before and there's all the madness of a phaser with a lot of subtlety which I like. Also loved your playthrough of any colour you like. One of my fav songs from the band.

I’m a keyboard player, and I remember picking up my first electric guitar back in the 90’s. Just for fun and to expand my sound palate. I didn’t realize it at the time, but all the pedals and effects I was drawn to were the ones that gave me the most Gilmour-esque sound. Phaser has always been my favorite effect, and all my effects give me that PF tone. I even bought EMG SA’s for my Strat back in the 90’s before I knew that’s what David was using! It wasn’t until the last couple of years with everyone openly chasing after David’s tone that I realized that’s exactly what I was doing back then!

I love the phaser in the '75 live versions of the songs. When I first was getting into Floyd, I bought the Boston Garden concert on CD at my local music shop. I had only heard Dark Side of the Moon at that time, so my first ever introduction to Shine On, Dogs, Sheep, Cigar, etc. was from this concert. I loved that phaser tone, and I still do. My favorite is You Gotta Be Crazy. Beautiful sounds.

Blackout Effectors Whetstone and their Sibling as well. The Whetstone can get classic MXR tones, as well as Uni-Vibe, Rotary, Vibrato, and even some Chorus sounds. All analog, and it has four settings to also do Ring Mod effects. The Sibling I use as a tone sculptor, as it is an Optical Phaser, and has a great Volume boost, with ability to go below the 50/50 mix, so it just adds some flavor.

My favorite phaser is the Earthquarker Devices Grand Orbiter. I love how it has more control over the effect in comparison to something like the Phase 90. It has Depth, speed, resonance, and sweep knobs with a speed toggle that changes the speed knob from slow, stationary, and fast and a vibrato switch to kill your dry signal. I still love the iconic sound of the Phase 90 though and i completely understand how its simplicity is one of its strengths. Definitely a fantastic pedal to have in one's collection or on their board.

It depends on the tone that you are looking for, I usually put my phasers after drive, that way I get a grittier, more "nasty" sound out of it, that way it contrasts my friend's more soothing tone (my bandmate puts his phaser before the drives). What I also like to do is to use 2 phasers at the same time with different speeds, one is a phase 90 and the other one is a locally made phaser that has a depth control and a feedback control (how much of the signal feedbacks back to the phaser's circuit), very cool tones with it, combined with fast flanging gives a huge sound, good for 1 note leads (playing multiple notes with it is not recommended tho).

I agree with both, I run my pedal board with my mods running into my driver's and tube pre amps, but also I have a Boss BE-5 that runs it s compression and drives into delay and chorus but if you use the effects loop it isolates those from each other.

Script 90 with 82K resistors in it is my overall favorite. I love the Small Stone V3 too with the volume drop mod and mix mod. Phase 45 is also classic and hard to beat. Univibe is legendary who doesn't love that sound. The DOD FX20B is on that list too, terribly underrated and sounds great. DOD201 and 490 are also great, but very similar to the 45 and 90.

I recently picked up the wonderful Lost Highway dual phaser by Fender! Extremely versatile and sounds fantastic also has a +3dB boost switch on the back. I love that there are two phasers in one pedal. They can be fully independent, or you can ramp between the two with the sensitivity knob which controls the gate between them. I have the left side set for a slow Uni-Vibe like swirl and the other side is a nice Leslie rotary speaker sound. I've been looking around for a decent phaser for some time now but none of them seem to be SLOW enough for me. I almost got the MXR Phase 95 but even all the way down the speed was just too much. For me, this one is just right! I've found it useful for very subtle movement as well as Leslie like tones. I'm not a fan of the jet take off type phase and I rarely use phase and dirt at the same time. I mostly prefer just a nice clean subtle phase before my dirt pedals. But one of the coolest things is that with the sensitivity knob you can blend in each of the settings with each other. For example, with the settings I have above and increase the sensitivity when you dig in and play harder you get some of the Leslie tone and when you play softer it goes away. From the manual "Sensitivity Knob: When the Slow mode is engaged, the Sensitivity control adjusts the threshold for the Lost Highway’s dynamically controlled rate. As the Sensitivity is turned clockwise, the Lost Highway can automatically switch from Slow to Fast settings with the changes in your instrument’s volume-softer playing will keep the Lost Highway set to your Slow settings; louder playing will send the Lost Highway ramping up to your Fast settings. Turn the Sensitivity control fully counter-clockwise to disable this feature."

Hi Love your videos and wondered if you might have a look at this lap steel slide guitar. The price is certainly good and any reports I have seen so far. But your expert eye and ear would be appreciated. As you must have guessed I am after that classic David Gilmour slide like the intro to Breath. So taken up by Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) riffs and sounds I wanted to try his iconic slide guitar sounds. After much research I happened upon what most Floyd tribute bands are using over here, Surprisingly low priced £99 GBP from Thomann. In Germany: The Harley Benton Slider 11 lap Steel W/ Stand. Those of you in the States will find this under the Rogue name who I am told is the actual manufacturer in the east. I intend to tune it for open, E with lots of reverb, as that suits my type of music and fret board knowledge. Your time appreciated Mike

Great video, Bjorn. Every time you upload, my GAS for a Lionheart20 increases! So good. I agree, you can use any Phaser (I'm currently using an EHX Bad Stone instead of my Phase 90 script & block logo pedals, just for a change - it's starting to become one of my favourites, tied in first place with the classic script Phase90) but I'm wondering if there is a Phaser that can get you closer to Univibe sounds as well as classic Phaser. I've been told that a Phase45 can function as a "faux-Univibe". You mentioned that it's similar to a Univibe, so that has piqued my interest. I guess it's similar to the Chorus as "faux-Rotary" notion.
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! The Phase 45 is much more subtle compared to a UniVibe but it sounds very similar. The MXR Phase 95 has both the Phase 90 and 45. As does the Svi Sound Techno Phaser that I mentioned in the review. The Dunlop RotoVibe is perhaps the one pedal that I've found that can cover both phasing and UniVibe in one pedal with one effect.

I notice the knob pretty much stays at around 11:30 o'clock for most of the video on most of the songs until you get to the rotary part. That seems to be the sweet spot of this pedal, especially for those Gilmour tones and songs. Although this pedal sounds great no matter where the rate is set, but the lower speeds really nail that univibe vibe. Would love to hear Have A Cigar!!! Can't believe you left that one out Bjorn! Is this leading up to a Phase 90 pt.2 video perhaps? Hmm.... 😜
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 5 жыл бұрын
I've done tons of clips with Have a Cigar so I thought I'd left that one out this time. The Phase 90 can do lots of different tones. Setting it at 8:30 nails those Van Halen tones. Cheers!

@@gilmourishofficial oh no worries jk, I've seen several vids where you play that riff and you do it well! I always wanted to learn that one, i think it's one of his most funkiest moments that's what I love about it. He really uses that effect to it's full potential all over that album in particular. A very prominent early 70s sound indeed. I always wondered if the sounds on "Time" and "Breathe" were created with a phaser or a univibe, or maybe both? I know there was also a strong Leslie influence as well... which adds a strong chorusing and rotary effect into the mix. I'll definitely have to keep that in mind for the EVH tones, the "brown sound"! I recently required an all original vintage Phase 90 from 1974 in great condition! It sounds amazing! So mellow and warm and groovy and organic sounding, and the effect is alot more subtle and less dramatic/overbearing than the modern recreations and incarnations.

I've always loved my MXR Phase 90, it just has such an iconic sound to it and I always use it whenever I want to add a bit of a David Gilmour or Eddie Van Halen vibe to it (my two reasons/influences for buying the pedal)

id just like to say something interesting with what ive found with shine on you crazy diamond and david gilmour it seems that almost all of his "clean" tones either aren't actually clean and have a slight drive to them or they are completely clean and straight into the mixing desk another brick in the wall pt1 is mixing desk and delay the first 2 solos of shine on you crazy diamond are straight into the mixing desk, but when he plays the 4 notes, it has the master volume up so that it drives the output tubes, warming up the phaser and making it a little more subtle and giving a more ethereal tone so if you want to get a good shine on you crazy diamond tone, you will want to add some kind of overdrive after the phase 90, because otherwise the phaser is just too prominant in the 4 notes bit and the third solo of the song, you need to also place a coloursound powerboost before the phaser for the 3rd solo, but you still keep the amp at a high volume to drive it a bit there are very few instances i can think of where in the studio he is using a hiwatt completely clean with no drive, i think pigs might be the only time during the rotating speakers riff that he plays, but who knows, maybe that was straight in the yamaha and mixing desk my point is, if you want to get good david gilmour tones, either turn your amp up or add more gain to your amp with the gain knob or an overdrive pedal as some sort of boost i suspect that live he does the same but has his volume knob rolled down to make it clean and then he might roll the volume back up when he needs to, that or he just has it set clean so he has that versatility, though i suspect he had it rolled down during live in pompei. in echoes, the cleans are really clean, but there are some parts that seem slightly boosted and he didn't have the powerbooster then, so thats what makes me think that. just try it, ive been doing it for a while and it seems to work for me

Great observations. This is covered in detail on my site www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=5682. David has recorded his guitars straight into the mixing console more times that one should think. Shine On intro, Another Brick 1 the solo on 2, Coming Back to Life etc... Tube compression and EQ in those old desks makes all the difference from lining the guitar into a modern sound interface.

Sounds good with phaser but for the ones that don't know, Shine On You intro is actually a Yamaha RA200 rotary speaker.

No, that’s not correct. David didn’t start using the Yamaha until early 1976 and the recording of Animals. The very first solo on the studio version of Shine On was most likely recorded with the Black Strat straight into the mixing console, with pre-amp compression added in the input stage. The four note so-called Syd’s Theme was recorded with the Black Strat into a split between a Fender Showman and a Leslie 760, with an MXR Phase 90 and Binson Echorec II for effects.

I use a modded block phase 90, bought around '08 or '09. A friend of mine who worked for Caroline took out a resistor and it sounded warmer.

Thank you. As always very good video. Liked how you did dogs, in standard tuning, which I’ve read maybe Dave was tuned down on the studio ver to some D9 type chord. Okay so my question is about your 74 reissue P90, mine seems faster at 11 o clock than yours did.... because mine is not a reissue? Bought mine new in like 2005.

Thanks! Yes, David tuned down his guitar in D but, which makes a considerable difference to the tone but no reason why it can’t be played in standard tuning for a quick jam :) I’m sure there are small variations as to how the pots are aligned on these pedals.

gilmourish RIIS thanks, yeah I’d like to slow mine down a bit, i rarely take it higher than 9 o clock ... Dogs, one of the best PF songs - need a tab for that in standard. Did you get a chance to see Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets? I find myself enjoying that early floyd more and more. Saw last week in St Louis. Was great.

You could say that, yes. The mix of the effect is unchangeable. You can only change the Rate of the effect.

That Pedal Show did a good comparison video recently which included a Binson, the Boonar and the Strymon Volante. The Volante hit me as being likely the most versatile of this style of delay pedal, and on the strength of that, I bought the Strymon. I am very, very pleased with it. It would be wonderful to see Bjorn demoing the Boonar vs the Volante. I suspect the Boonar is perhaps a little closer to the original Binson, but the Volante is also amazing, and again, likely more versatile.

Nice, very interesting!!!Thank you. Now I am pretty sure that David Gilmour used Univibe on Dark Side Of The Moon and Phaser on Wish You Were Here! Breathe and Any Color sound better with Univibe. I am lucky to own one but I do not own a Phase 90!!! Going to afford me one 😂 Thank you 🎉

Absolutely. It's documented on my site www.gilmourish.com 😉 The idea here was to show that you can use the Phase 90 for different tones and, in fact, Dvaid did use the Phase 90 for Breathe dunring the 1974-75 leg of the Dark Side tour. The UniVibe was eventually taken off the board.

Hey Bjorn, I have a EHX Deluxe Mistress reissue (I know your feelings of them lol) and a Boss CE-5 for modulation. I have them in the FX loop with a hint if dirt on a power booster clone. With some added delay, I cant seem to get the sound if those four notes just right. Do you think I need to fiddle with the eq on both of my modulation pedals, or just Eff it, and get a Phase 90? Like are either of those pedals capable of getting phaser tones? Thanks in advance.
@gilmourishofficial
@gilmourishofficial 2 жыл бұрын
No not really. Chorus and flanger are delay effect, while the Phase 90 and UniVibe are phase shifters. The technology and tone is very different. A Phase 90 script model will give you the WYWH tone 👍

Do you have a tone control on the bridge pickup? I’m using the echoes bridge pickup still but it’s VERY bright and spiky compared to the sound you’re getting here. I know you’re using SSL5. Btw your phase tones sound INCREDIBLE

@gilmourishofficial 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The Echoes has a push/pull bridge. The low output is similar to a stock CS69, which can be very bright. The hotter mode is very similar to a SSL5. I don't find that bright at all... What amp and amp settings do you use?
@MrSpock
@MrSpock 5 жыл бұрын
gilmourish riis why did you switch it back to SSL5 then? I use various Two Rock amps usually. I typically use the neck and middle (position 4) most. What capacitor is your bridge pickup connected to and do you have a different capacitor for the neck and for the bridge tone control circuits?

Hello , I recently started learning the electric guitar, and David Gilmour is one of my idols to emulate. I just have one question how do you arrange all the pedals and how do you use them?? I have been playing only acoustic guitar for 4 years now and I have little to no knowledge on how to set up a and use the pedalboard like David Gilmour. I have written down all the pedals I will need from your website as well have locked down on a Strat with Gilmour mods but I really need help with the setup on the pedalboard. Any help would be really appreciated as I would like to play a lot of Floyd songs(the reason I am starting to learn the electric guitar).

I'm guessing that Gilmourish does not publish tabs due to copy write issues? Looking for some reliable tabs for One of These Days. Can anyone point me in the right direction? On a more relevant note, I have recently purchased the Keeley Dark Side pedal which I am quite happy with. This purchase was largely inspired by a review that you published on KZbin.

Love ur work so much, big BIG respect for all videos and web site man, u are the most pedantic tone finder and David fan👍 I have a few questions: 1) Few weeks ago i was bought Seymour Duncan SSL-5, and in near future i'll setup it in the bridge of Rosewood fretboard/Alder body Strat. What do u think about that pickup against David's analog from Dimarzio? Do u planning to make pickups comparing videos in future? 2) Is there any method to reach the "seagull effect" without vintage wah wah pedal? I've just has a Bias Fx and Big Muff Green Russian😅? Is that possible through the bias and without real wah pedal?
