My '01 Camry: A Love Story of 370K Miles and Counting

I bought this 01 Camry in late 2001 after the Dealership had used it all year and racked up 5000 miles on it. I sort of had to take whatever price/deal they offered me because my trade in was a Cadillac that I still owed 1000s of dollars on and IT had a head gasket issue. I don’t remember what I paid for it, $27,000, I think. A high price, but good deal because I thought she'd last as long as two cars, and I was right.
This trusty Camry has been my reliable companion on high-paying pipe fitting jobs all over the country. From the heat of San Antonio, TX to the chill of Upstate Maine, never once did she break down or leave me stranded.
She's old now, bears the scars of countless journeys, and smokes a bit, but I still love and drive her daily. Please follow the LINK below and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You!

When your car is that faithful, the least you can do is be faithful in return. I like how you've kept it looking good in spite of other careless drivers trying to take it out. Blessings to you and your family.

2003 Toyota tacoma....456,273.2 miles and still has no leaks. Standard transmission. Only maintenence so far is two clutches, two water pumps and a new radiator. AC has had zero work and still gets air temp out of the vents at 39 degrees. 4wd drive still works great. Needs a paint job though. Thanks for sharing David.

My 2005 Highlander runs well, but body is in similar condition. I'm planning to sand, primer (Canned primer) and do a roll-on paint job this summer. I did this on one of my other cars and it turned out surprisingly well...for $100 bucks. Got the idea from a few youtube videos !

I'm with ya on the toyotas with character dave, got a 02 tacoma that has a few chigger bites on it, along with 250k miles. Just think of the payments you dont make every month. I have had scheduled maintenance, and a clutch slave cylinder replaced. The biggest problem with the old tacomas is keeping good door handles on them and they are easy and cheap. Love payment freedom

Be on the lookout for back up motor and transmission, put a couple junkyard doors on right side, take it to your local sign shop and have them wrap it (I think a flame job would suit) then drive it for another 400,000 miles. It's a shame so many of these long lasting Camry's and Corolla's bit the dust during the Cash-For-Clunkers nonsense, no doubt they would still be many on the road to this day.

These Toyotas last forever. I have a '01 Toyota called a Conquest hatchback in our country. RIght hand drive, and manual. Its got 67 000 miles on it. I service it myself religiously every 10000 km. Perfect condition, even the upholstery is just fine. Everbody wants to buy this car when they see it, but I always have to decline. That engine is bulletproof and easy to work on when required.

The fact that it’s still in perfect condition after 67,000 miles is a testament to both Toyota’s build quality and your diligent maintenance.

Some years back, an Oil Rep of the Company ('Habot' Synthetic Oils and Lubricants) servicing the Mining Operation I was working on .. he had quite extensive links with the Auto Industry, his take on Toyota .. They design and build their vehicles, with regular servicing, to run for a MINIMUM of 5 years without any problems whatsoever .. NIL! Part of their rationale was that the average Toyota Owner would 'trade' his vehicle in, once it has been paid off, on a new model one. Result .. Toyota Owners extremely happy with their vehicles and with only good things to say about them. Those who chose to keep their vehicles, with judicious maintainence, also reaped the benefits of Toyota Engineering Quality .. not to mention the second-hand market / demand which was huge. 'Toyota Owners'. Toyota deliberately priced their vehicles higher than other brands in the same market segment. Why? They reasoned that those who were prepared / able to pay the premium, would also be prepared to carry the cost of the regular servicing and maintenance on the vehicle .. thus nary a Toyota standing at the roadside with the bonnet open. An interesting discussion from back in the early 90's and one that I have not forgotten.

I had a 92 Camry that I sold in 2001 with 450,000 miles on it. My brother saw it driving around 3 years later. I have a 2003 Camry now that the paint is doing the same thing. I don’t want the the new type of cars. I am going to look into a complete refurb with a new engine and full body work and I bet it costs less than a new car. I don’t want anything electronic or GPS or back up cameras or connectivity or any of that crap. That Camry can probably go another 200K

Many Toyotas can easily last 400k+ miles as long as you keep up with changing the fluids. Most peole know to change the engine oil, but many people tend to neglect the other fluids like transmission fluid, engine coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid. All of those should be replaced every 50k-60k miles. The dirty transmission fluid can cause it to wear out faster. The dirty power steering fluid can act as a cutting agent in the high pressure line. The engine coolant becomes more and more corrosive as it ages so even though it looks clean it's still eating away at the inside of the aluminum radiator and engine block. The brake fluid will absorb moisture over time and cause the steel brake lines to rust from the inside and that moisture in the fluid can start to boil inside the calipers and that creates air which then causes you to lose brake power. Moral of the story is ALL fluids should be changed once in a while. Don't believe a manufacturer when they say a fluid is a "lifetime fluid" because to them the "lifetime" is under 100k miles. To you the lifetime should be, with a Toyota, 300k to 500k miles.

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl my dad had a bit of a problem with another motorist (lol) and we had the doors ($650 plus fuel and overnight stay at a cheap motel on the other side of the state) and paid a local body shop to fix the b pillar, mount the doors, swap hardware, electronics, etc plus paint and install a mirror on the other side, which I’d had for a year or so, for about two thousand less than the insurance paid out for the total loss. Worked out pretty good for them. Also, I got to visit the most depressing city I’ve yet seen in my state (the hardware/ sporting goods store next to the cheap hotel was pretty epic though, so, not a total waste of time…) coffee wasteland, though.

Also, I had a 1989 Camry wagon for years that finally expired at 321k miles because, on the way home late at night from a fishing trip, I wasn’t paying attention enough to notice it overheating due to a blown out coolant hose, those 2.2l engines have SO MANY tiny, hidden coolant hoses) I had it towed home and the next morning came to the conclusion that the head gasket was blown and it might have slipped a tooth or two on the timing belt. I considered fixing it, but after I totaled up all the other repairs it needed (mostly missing interior trim and door gaskets and such) I ended up selling it to a guy whose sister needed a parts car (mostly for the interior parts that were, apparently, still good). I still kind of miss that car. Not the highest mileage car I owned though. I had a 1971 dodge dart with over 400k on it (can’t even remember why I let that one go, wasn’t all that much wrong with it) and I had a 1970 Mercedes 220d with over 600k on it. Everything was wrong with that car, but it still started and drove.
