Surly's are solid rides and I like the friendly 'secret hand-shake' amongst those of us who have one; always cool vibes. I have a '18 Karate Monkey running in single-speed mode and it's been a great 'one-bike'. Adding the Moloko bars made an already solid bike that much more comfortable and versitile.

I've toured for 4 years (with a six month break between each one year leg) and I'm amazed how similar our setups and gear is. Surly, Brooks, Ortlieb, platform pedals, Schwalbe... great minds think alike. :) I did start on a LHT but switched to a Troll with upright swept back bars, and with disc brakes. After a bad crash with wet and muddy rim brakes I'd never go back. I'm still on heavy duty 26" wheels. Work great for me and I've never had problems with them in the field... though I have replaced the whole set a couple of times. Pro-tip: cut the top few inches off a mid sized plastic coke bottle and slip it over the top of your water bottles like a protective sleeve. Really cuts down on stomach problems. Good luck.

I also ride (but on significantly shorter routes) an older bike (I think it was built in 1999 (Univega), basically the mtb, which I converted into a traveler, works great, similar equipment: 26 inch, Acera, Deore, Schwalbe Marathon (basic model)... I have a 2007 Surly Long Haul Trucker that I was gifted by my employer. I have ridden for 37 years, more or less, and have owned about 12 nice bicycles, and a few crappy ones. The LHT is my favorite, by far, and that includes my Titanium Litespeed Gravel. The Litespeed is a thing of beauty, but to be honest, I ride the LHT more. Bulletproof, reliable, stable, versatile, easy to work on, and all-day-comfortable, Surly LHT's are world-class expedition bicycles. The LHT has been discontinued by Surly in favor of the Disc Trucker, which is similar and a good touring bike, but just not quite in the same class.

Great video of your bike after so many KM's. Maybe good to give you frame a good clean and look for any cracks. Using sand paper get rid of all the rust and repaint those parts. I would then spray oil into all the small frame holes( for welding) on the seats stays and chains stays. The same with the forks. This should help it from rusting on the inside. Also remove the seatpost and spray oil down there and grease so the seatpost does not corrode and fuse into the frame.

We used and continue to use the 26” wheel because of strength, slightly lower center of gravity, better tire selection, and ease of finding a mountain bike wheel replacement. Yes, I understand with the changes in time, 26” wheels are becoming more difficult to find in some parts of the world. Nice review, Thank you.

This is so interesting, I love a much used touring bike. There is always something not quite right with a touring bike without a scratch. As for the drop bar, i looks to me that a shallower type drop bar, maybe one with a wider splay would work much better.

I use butterfly bars now and I actually think I prefer my old flat bars with extenders on the end. Butterflies flex too much for me and putting a handlebar bag on isn't always straightforward. The advantage of drops is that you can have friction change gear levers which I'm jealous of!

Hi Jin! Thank you for your video. You shared a lot of useful practical experience with us. 26" wheel size: In my region in Central Europe, the 26 wheel is available, but these days it is increasingly difficult to buy the desired part immediately in the premium segment. I am also a fan of steel frames and 26 wheels. And I tried several schwalbe tires. If you allow me a piece of advice, rust protection is important for steel frames. Outside, the powder-coated paint is durable. The inside of the pipes can be treated (in Europe, Motip hollow wax). Ciao

After living half of my life in Scandinavia I strongly recommend to plan your route through Norway. It's so magical here. Just not forget atleast 36 or even 40T cassette ;) Btw you don't need to change front chainrings, cassette and rear deraileur so often, if you check your chain for wear and change when it's worn out.

Sweet bike. I think you should upgrade your Rear derailleur and replace your rear cassette with an 11speed, then switch to a 2 chainring system. you will have only 22 gears but it should meet most of your needs and simplify your drivetrain.

Great content as always, Jin. Learning a lot. I agree with the comments, brands should sponsor you. :) It’s true for the 26”, in my local area I noticed that it’s easier to find compared to a 650b especially if the area is more remote. :)

@@universewithme I live in the Philippines and what I noticed in the rural areas the bike shops usually carries the 26” spares compared to 650b even those shops that are a bit outdated there’s a good chance that they have stocks. :)

I have flat bars with end extenders (antlers.) I prefer it to the butterfly and drop bars. It's really easy to install flat bar shifters might be worth it or go with a fancy type of flatbar like Jones or surly brand.

I find it so interesting that 26" wheels have become less common. I toured Europe in 1999 and I taco'd my wheel in a small town in Denmark. The local bike shop didn't have any compatible wheels or rims for my bike with 700C wheels. As a tall guy, I'm kind of glad 700C has become more common now since larger wheels suit my big body.

Normally the cassette and crankset will have a far longer life than the chain. but a worn down chain wears those components much quicker. it would be much better to change your chain more often (like 5000km or half a year), that way the other components would not wear neraly as much and you dont need to replace them every year. you can carry a "chain wear tool" to check how much the chain is worn and if it needs a replacements. cassettes normaly life past at least 2-3 chains and the cranksets much more.

damn when you think each mark on bike frame with it's own history ... thank you Jin for another video 👍 I've tried on one of my bike butterfly handlebars but with drop I found more options for body and they are narrower to pass traffic

yes I prefer vintage drop bars, they only 420mm wide, got 100mm stem up/down adjustment range , when you loading more lifting up when empty on lower position, also when cycling for steering using pedals and leaning your body weight from one to other side your bike , narrow bars is advantage in busy roads but not on gravel or sand

I still can't believe after 10 years you don't have sponsorship of any kind 😔 To get a decent 26inch rim brake in just 8 speed HUD is near impossible in my city, soon as 9 speed took over most are disk brake. Basically have to build your own.
