As someone who is just getting back into Lego after 30+ years (because 'girls' aren't suppose to play with boyish things), and only recently learning the past few years that I'm technically "high functioning autistic" (not official diagnosed but some doctors suggested it). I'm an artist with a semi-eidetic memory (I don't think or remember in sound, but anything visually sticks for long periods of time, and I can replicate it pretty well before the muscle spasms started to cause issues). I also grew up learning several languages (mostly teaching myself) by the age of 11, the only one in my family who graduated high school, went on to college (with no help, because my family did everything to either disown me, OWN me to gain benefits or found other ways to just use me for their own selfish greed), paying out of pocket and refused to take out any loans, I'm also the only one in my family with 0 debt, had a 4.0 GPA in accounting, business, Japanese, computers, math, art, and so many other interests before my health plummeted. I did everything in my power to get out of that abusive family years ago, I even realized by the age of 7, I couldn't trust any of them to ever be there for me... I'm always looking for new ways to learn new things even when going into my 40's, even after not using a majority of my knowledge in 20+ years, I still remember much of my Japanese, and art skills and anything I invested interest in. I'm looking forward to any tutorials you have for these great maps, I would love to put into perspective my ideas back into Lego, I would love to use everything I worked so hard for that kept being taken from me time and time again. Real torture is having knowledge to fix things or help people, but not allowed to have any real power to be heard/believed or appreciated. I know that feeling of just wanting someone to see the creation you made and be inspired or feel any ounce of joy in what they would see, and just... nothing... or worse, disgust, disdain, like you're a stain on society... It's absolutely cruel what society dictates what is and isn't acceptable. In your own way, you are an artist, a person can not like the art, but they should never transfer that feeling onto the person. I'm lucky to have found and asked out my fiancé almost 6 years ago. But it took years of knowing what I didn't want to finally find what I did want and fight for it (with an understanding of them having the choice to say no of coarse, but again I was lucky they said yes, and we've been together since). Sorry I'm probably over sharing, but Life is one decision/choice and circumstance that leads to others, everything is connected in some way, and seeing them and knowing them and feeling them all have different aspects, but they all matter to make a person, the person they are. You aren't your autism, You are a creative person who thinks differently, you are still human and deserved to be loved and treated with respect and understanding. I don't know if society will ever learn to treat people with dignity and integrity... it probably won't, but don't let that dissuade you from being the change you want to see in the world and taking that step of helping and believing and supporting others when you were not. this video was a random algorithm pick by KZbin, and I'm glad it showed up, it gave me a spark of faith back into humanity seeing all the people here supporting you and your passion, some days we just need that, and I hope that even my little part also adds onto that encouragement for others. (please ignore any typos and improper grammar, my English was always the hardest language to learn even as an American since it borrows from so many other languages it's literally impossible to master, and Microsoft spellcheck loves to randomly change the words I type to something completely incoherent, yes I proof read as I type, yes it changes as soon as I hit send... yes it's absolutely frustrating that I keep turning it off and Microsoft just turns it back on again without my consent... every... chance... it ... gets... ).

I'm 70 with Asperger's, never diagnosed as nobody knew about it in the 50s, 60s, 70s, or 80s even. So I never got any help from anyone and was bullied constantly, even by some of the teachers. I didn't have any money or even a lot of paper, but I wanted to draw maps too. Whenever I rode with my parents on a drive through the country, I would take notes on state road numbers and mark on the paper how the intersections were laid out. I had a lot of notes by the time I was able to buy county maps and see how I did. In the 70s, I was already into genealogy and local history. I found from local history that there had been a plan of the town done in the early 1700s and that it was required to be on display at the courthouse. If you went to see it, and they didn't show it to you, they had to pay you. I also found that the map no longer exists. So I decided to go through all the deed books in the courthouse and reconstruct the map, including all the lot numbers. I still have that map, and no one yet has done one like it. Later, while looking through deeds, I found a property description for a plantation in the 1800s that seemed to include the land where I lived. So I drew an outline of the tract from the description. Some bounds followed creeks and rivers, so I had to get a forestry service map that covered the area and redraw it and my outline to the same scale. So I now have the only map that exists showing the bounds and location of Austin Plantation in Craven County, NC. I have been collecting maps for many years. But that was just one of my interests. I started researching my genealogy in 1966 and starting writing a book in 1970. I finally self-published the book in 1989. My other big interest is music. I have thousands of records, tapes, and CDs, as well as hundreds of thousands of MP3 files on the computer. I really want to have all popular recordings in the US for all time and in all genres (pop, country, dance/disco, etc.). So I can understand your mapping desire. Luckily, my parents didn't stop me from doing anything, possibly because the map notes were small, and the other mapping happened after I left home. I am now a professional genealogist, and in my small area of the field, I am the world go to person. I get emails and letters from around the world. So everyone who is different needs to keep at their interests, as they may turn into a career that they love.

Thank you for the very uplifting comment, all the best.

Amen!!! Encourage this lad!!! I'm a Civil Engineer & I had the opportunity to work in Bayonne, New Jersey as an Engineering intern! I had the unique privilege of HAND DRAFTING with a K & E INK PEN SET on VELLUM! I worked on an honest-to-goodness drafting board with a T-square & triangles! 😊 OH, and LEROY!!!! 😁👍 Someone will know what Leroy is - you just might! (To others: Google it if you aren't familiar...) Leroy is a FONT or type of lettering. We used an ink pen (not a ballpoint, but actual ink...) that had a fixed diameter tube at the top which produced a very consistent width line of ink. We used a lettering set which consisted of a small lettering tool (a small pantograph) which had a pin & a clamp for the pen. In order to produce consistent lettering we would place the pin into a template which looked like a ruler with the letters a to z and 0 through 9 engraved into it. We then traced the pin through the engraved letter. The pen would follow along and ink out a perfect, consistent letter on the sheet. We would lift the lettering tool, slide the lettering template to the next letter and repeat. You could become quite proficient after a while! The ink was actually erasable on the vellum once it dried. So if it smudged or you made a mistake you could actually erase the line fairly easily. You could also use a template with the eraser to tidy things up. When working with pencils you would use different hardnesses of lead to produce different types of lines. The ink was much less susceptible to smearing and fading over time and retained a crisp knee appearance that was easy to read. Vellum is an opaque material that is slightly transparent. It could be used to trace out portions of existing maps from underneath. A typical sheet would be 24 inches tall by 36 inches wide. Since the sheets were so large you could not use a typical photocopy machine to make reproductions of the drawings. So once the drawing was completed, you would take the semi-opaque / semi-transparent sheet of vellum with the ink drawing and place it on top of a large (24"x36") green chemically treated sheet. Both sheets would be lined up and fed into a ~40" wide machine with rollers. It was similar to a very very large laminating machine. The machine would shine ultraviolet light onto the vellum. The light would bleach out light green and produce a bluish/purple color where the ink blocked the light. And THAT is how we made BLUEPRINTS! 😁👍 The machine gave off a strong bleach smell! They had maps from that time as well and extensive mapping of all the sewer lines. I was like a little school child looking through all those planning maps and tax maps!!! Drawers and drawers of ancient maps! Many of the sewer lines were still brick lined. I don't know if they were still in place but some of the cross sections that you've been showed wooden pipes!! To some people's horror, they still emptied directly into the bay when there was intense rainfall. The rainwater wood overwhelm the sewage treatment plants and the water would flow through a combined sewer of rainwater and sewage. The overflows would empty directly into the Newark bay & Kill Van Kul (off Staten Island) as late as 2000. I believe the city was asked to try to rectify that issue at some point. That would have taken a bit of engineering and a lot of construction. However, there were major changes around that time. The water department was privatized and I heard that things fell into disrepair for several years. I understand that action was eventually ruled to be invalid legally and reversed. What was just as amazing as all of those old tax maps and sewer drawings was the men who worked in the water and sewer department and knew every single pipe and every single water shut off in the city. It's near impossible to transfer that amount of knowledge. I sure hope those drawings weren't lost and got digitized and saved!!!

The issue is if such a skill is useful, can be monetized, and can lead to independence and a good quality of adult life. Otherwise, it's a useless obsession that drains time from learning skills that CAN lead to monetization and leading an independent and good quality adult life. That's a loving parent's biggest concern. They will not always be around nor capable for caring for their child if the child has no skills to be an independent adult. They don't want to have to worry about them for the rest of their lives. So many other adults prey on others and don't care of the other person has autism, downs, or any type of categorized "disability"! They see someone they can dupe and trick and they take advantage. It's a parent's worst nightmare. So the parents relentlessly worry over their child. So, yes it's weird and worrisome for them. But this video creator is striving to build a career out of it and that's wonderful. I hope that they are successful and happy! Very few people get to make careers out of something that they are so truly talented at. This is one way autism can be a gift. It just has to be guided and more opportunities need to open up for autistic people to use their gifts in productive ways so they can make careers out of these talents!

But we weren’t allowed to and got scolded and punished if we did. According to them it was a waste of time and we drew weird stuff too so it wasn’t valid “art”. We had to hide our drawings: under table covers, the bed, pillows, stuffed animals… it took years to unlearn the anxiety of drawing in the open. My two younger sisters took up graphic design , but i’m the only one who stopped actively drawing. I’m glad OP never gave up. I agree, it must be due to a seriously considerable amount of ignorance. It's common knowledge that it's amazing for positive brain development and even looking at it from a parents self centered perspective wouldn't they want their children to have a hobby that is quiet and often low maintenance? It's a pity that you stopped drawing, perhaps you might re-kindle your interest in it in the future as a hobby?

@@Samqdf it’s very common within immigrant families to deem creative work as useless, that can’t be taken as a serious career pursuit. It comes from a place of care and love, where parents want to have a better life for their children and don’t want them to struggle as much as they themselves did. Although well intentioned, that can be harmful as well… Funnily enough, my whole family is artistically gifted. Both my mother and grandmother were very creative when they were children but neither were able to pursuit a creative job due to either financial or political constraints. So I guess there is some inter generational trauma passed down as well haha I am currently in the process of breaking down what’s holding me back and trying to find the joy in drawing again. I love this. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with encyclopedias. I started writing out the encyclopedia in a notebook, though never got far with it. I was obsessed with countries and maps especially. I'd draw maps, look at maps, and these days, I get around by using the map in my mind. I'm not autistic, but I did draw an entire planet's map. Still have it. I started when I was 22 years old with the intent to write a sci-fi novel series on that planet. Maybe I'll get back to it someday. These days, I make maps in Cities Skylines and Minecraft. Your maps are amazing. Keep doing what you love.

Her reaction wasn't exactly positive after, but sounds like she accepted his activity for what it was. I'd guess that that wasn't the first time they'd argued over this, and her negative reaction to it/attempt to suppress the behavior had a lot to do with those previous arguments.

I relate to you quite a lot. I was never formally diagnosed with autism, but I felt more and more strongly that I had it with each passing year, to the point that in my Junior year of college I felt not a single ounce of doubt. Earlier this year, during my senior year of college, my older sister got diagnosed with autism, and knowing that close siblings often share it, I'd take that as a confirmation for me as well. She also thinks my dad has autism. That is probably the case for you as well. As a kid, I didn't have an outlet as functional as drawing maps. Instead, I bounced between a lot of fixations. In high school, I got interested in cars and that's been my fixation since. For a while, I became more social than is stereotypically characteristic of autism, but I felt like expanding my social circle did me more harm than good, so a few years back, I became more fixated than ever. I was an engineering student at this point. I read a new textbook each day for about a month, and then wrote "courses" as if I were teaching the subjects to learn it myself. I then compiled all of the information I thought would be relevant into a collection of notebooks.

I was thinking about it, and I think the fear of having a child who is abnormal poisons the art for the mother. Where any normal person sees the maps and says "Oh my god, that's amazing", what the mother sees is the thing that makes her child strange. You can imagine a foolish thought that if she could just get them to stop drawing the maps then they would not be so strange anymore. Of course, that's not how autism works, but people don't think particularly rationally sometimes.

Do you keep a tradition/consistency among designs that honors past styles which made the brand famous that are updated for each era in much the same way the Mustang, Corvette and other famous cars do across decades? By owning ither companies, is that like General Motors owning Chrysler and Chevrolet? Did they buy the competition? As previously asked, can you see the influence of ownership upon the owned companies, even in terms of business decisions, such as cutting branches and refocusing/rebranding? I could keep going.

I think it's because of the over competitive world we live in, where everything we learn need to serve our cause. People, and especialy parents, want the others to do useful things... But usefulness is subjective. For example, a kid can play a lot to video-games and parents will think it's useless, but then he become pro-player and it suddenly became acceptable. I like to do open-source plugins or small projects, and most people do not understand the concept. "But why you do not sell it ? You lose your time". I think it's very similar here. If he were working as a cartograph, nobody would criticize it, but here it's seen as a lost of time. We live in a pretty sad world IMO, people do not know how to live anymore, only how to survive and be socially accepted... An alienating concept in itself, that is even worst for an autist.

This is a good question. We own everything we have to people like op. All of technology and industry. We have civilization because there were people in history capable of things others could only dream of. People like OP have mental capacity to shape world around them and others fear them for that. "Why don't you got drink beer with friends like a NORMAL person?". We have everything we have today thanks to Asperger's syndrome. Nearly every parent in the world dreams of his kid becoming a professional football player. It's a completely unproductive profession, a total waste of time, but it pays good. It does not pay good because it's something needed, but because people are ready to pay 5 times the cost of merchandize for a name on a product. It's literary because people are stupid. "What? You work in construction? you are so stuuupid!". "You designed the building I live in? But can you kick a ball like the guys on posters? Pfff, looser!" Creativity is rare and more important than any talent.

The current attitudes and trends deter a lot of artists. Why share and collaborate art when some multi-billion dollar AI will take it and grind it up to sell? A lot of creative industries are seeing record layoffs as well and there’s a lot of dismissal leveled at the arts in general. We need creativity, but right now those in business only see short term money gains and not the long term impact of driving away artists.

I’ve been doing something eerily similar to you all my life. I have over 300 A4 detailed hand-drawn maps with numbered POIs and businesses etc, and an extremely extensive key on Microsoft Excel for each grid reference labelling these numbers. I absolutely love seeing what other people have done, your maps look incredible. Very sorry about your situation my man

This hurts to watch tbh. Seeing spending time on something you are passionate about not affecting others, and then the distrust it creates. It makes no sense. I hope you can still love your family but be your own person. What you made is awesome. If I worked at a print shop and saw this, I would be told off by the manager for not getting my work done because I'm studying your map.

As someone who has both ADHD and autism, the key is to find something interesting with a relatively low commitment/labor demand, maybe something that ties into a different hobby. I keep a sewing journal that's similar to this one and use strict stylistic rules to make it look nice (page titles in Chancery Italic Hand done with my calligraphy pen, titles underlined with a colored highlighter, text done in black pen with two letters per grid box), which gives me both the creative flow state and the pretty end result. Since the journal is essentially a self-made reference book, I keep a table of contents in the front along with ideas for new pages, and everything in it is relevant to me. It's something I can pick up or put down without guilt, and I regularly look to it as an actual reference book. (One of my first pages was a key for different laundry care symbols, and I go back to it whenever I forget what a symbol on my clothing tag means)

Think about it this way, we have a need for very detailed things like this but not always. If 100 people live in a small village we don't need 100 detailed recordings of the terrain or 100 people working long hours to discover new elements or classify evey unique plant. From a co-operative, survival standpoint we need every type of person. In modern society, we expect people to fall somewhere in the middle and be perfect workers, but people like the poster who can focus on one thing in incredible detail for hours and people like you can fill a niche. Unfortunately, we can't pick our inclinations but even if society sometimes doesn't value people like you, we couldn't have gotten this far as a species without the natural variety.

Wait who would take maps away lol. Like it’s a detailed, high effort map. It’s the same thing as someone taking away a custom Lego set because “it’s not how it’s meant to be” or putting paint back in a can from a canvas because “it’s cluttered” People don’t have to understand why other people do what they do, they just have to accept art as what it is and appreciate effort. Keep drawing!

I have a spreadsheet with 45 tabs that I created over years, that lets me go through all the steps of designing a rocket engine. Creating a run deck for CEA, parsing that output, importing it, performance prediction, injector and chamber design, heat load prediction, coolant passage design, wall temps and heat fluxes, turbopump cycle balances, thermal cyclic fatigue analysis, dozens more. I used it to design almost 30 engines over two decades including the engines for two manned rocket planes and I was the right-seat flight test engineer for six flights on our second plane. The right level of OCD can lead to a lucrative and satisfying career. Roll with it!

This is your art, this is your expression, if anyone questions just say "these are my brush strokes" & maybe it will help mum understand a lil too. The beauty of a defined special interest like this is that you can make your special interest your lifes work and never work a day in your life.
