More protein! Thank you for these protein-enhanced videos. As a 68 year-old woman, I plan to incorporate more protein to see if it helps my energy level and my sleep. I’ve been plant-based for 9 years and kind of pooh-poohed keeping track of protein based on all the plant-based gurus I followed. I do believe protein needs change as you get older and I think there’s now more acknowledgment of this in the plant-based community. Thank you for your very helpful videos. 🌱

You are so welcome! And you are right, it's a challenge to find information for post menopausal women and protein. What I am finding is that it depends on your exercise and activity levels. Some studies say 1.2 to 2.g/kg of body weight. My doctor wants me to eat between 100 and 110 grams of protein a day. As a lose a bit of weight it will go down. I walk everyday and lift weights 3 times per week.

I'm glad that you're finding what makes you thrive and inspiring others! I was doing the 50 - 50 plate and experiencing getting hungry sooner. I had the opportunity to speak with a nutritionist who suggested a plate at every meal be ½ non-starchy veggies, ¼ whole food starchy veggies/grains, and ¼ of a higher protein source than what I had been, which was not paying attention to the amount of protein. I am eating more calories, but finally starting to drop some excess weight. The beauty is to find out what works best for our individual selves and remember that we are free to change and adopt what supports our well-being and wellness. All the best to you!

Great video and information Debi. I’ve read all the comments, there are so many of us looking to add more protein to our WFPB diet. According to the WFPB gurus, as long as you eat a varied diet, protein is not a problem. I don’t agree and have been questioning that in my mind for awhile. At 69, I find it hard to eat the volume of food that is needed to even get the minimum. I think many of us that have educated ourselves and adopted the WFPB principles/lifestyle, and even going further following SOS free, hesitate adding the minimally processed foods. Thank you for opening that dialogue and helping those of us that are looking for alternatives and healthy ways to add more protein. I applaud you. ❤️

Hi Debbie. Thanks for speaking about protein, especially for those of us who are now in our 60's (as you and I are) and perhaps may be experiencing osteoporosis (as I am). My doctor recommended me to boost my protein intake as well due to being plant based. I haven't started the protein powder yet...due to laziness! But I always include beans and/or lentils in all my meals, now. I struggle with cooking with Tempeh but cook with soy curls, TVP, and tofu often. I'll have to look back at your videos to see how you prepare Tempeh. Thanks for the insight, appreciate it!
@oafootnotes10 ай бұрын
Hi Barbara...I cut the tempeh into squares or strips and marinate them with some soy sauce, garlic powder, onion powder and a little cornstarch (for crispiness) and throw them in the air fyer...absolutley delicious! If you don't have an air fryer it's so worth it to get one for the plant-based protein. Air fried tofu and soy curls are a game changer too!
@ChewonVegan10 ай бұрын
I'll be doing a tempeh video soon. The key is to steam it first for a few minutes cut into cubes and then marinate in coconut aminos and spices. then I like to take it out of the marinade and toss it in some nutritional yeast for a bit of crispy. Air fry or bake @ 375 for 15 minutes or so.

I've never understood a 50/50 plate where half the plate was potatoes. It didn't make sense. It can't be enough protein. A quarter or more of the starch side should be beans, a starchy protein. So much more sensible. I'm glad to see that you're focusing on more beans and protein. And TOFU SHEETS?! Interesting!! Also, Butler Soy Curls are not really considered a processed food. Nothing good is removed, nothing bad added. They're simply extruded and dried. I love your content. Thank you!
@amandazplace566310 ай бұрын
What's interesting to me is that when I watch vegan videos, they always seem to estimate the protein in plant foods as being much higher than when I watch omnivore videos (or just google a food). This is very confusing to me. Are some vegans overestimating protein in plants or underestimating what we actually need?🤷 Without being intentional about tofu, lentils, beans, protein powder, etc, I would find it impossible to reach even, 50-60 grams a day. But, I'm also not one to eat enormous portions.🤷 To each their own, for sure, but, you have to listen to your own body. You are unique.♥️🇨🇦

You can also make a protein smoothie with Earth chimp protein powder and soy milk everyday. If you have no problem with wheat then you can use seitan to make lunch meat for sandwiches. I also love Kite hill vanilla Greek style yogurt, it has 17 grams of protein for serving. It gets easier the more you do it. Beans are good too but remember they are mostly carbs with some protein so they are higher on the calorie density scale. Beans are great for fiber. I hope that helps and gives you a few ideas.

Yes!!! especially after menopause we need to increase protein and decrease starch!!! I am finding it difficult to get my protein on plants..I cant use tempeh as it burns my throat..I seemed to do okay with marinated soy today so I am hopeful for using more of that. I don;t need to lose weight but just fat..I was looking very soft after menopause

Great! Yes your body composition does change after menopause. I love using lentil pasta and edamame pasta they are really high in protein and fiber. You might want to try steaming your tempeh for 5 minutes then marinate and air fry. It may help with the burning. Thank you so much for sharing💚

I think a lightbulb just went off for me. I definitely have been at a standstill with weight loss. I’m like you I have a good 10 pounds. I would love to lose and you really got me thinking that it could be my protein consumption. I am definitely going to Consciously up how much I get in a day and see where that takes me. Thank you so much for such an informative video. I can’t wait for the tofu sheet video.

You are so welcome. I do think tracking your protein and calories at least for awhile is a good strategy. You may be surprised how little protein you are getting. The tofu sheet video will be coming soon.

More protein. Looking at this as well. I’ve been WfPB for almost 20 years, and having a harder time with it lately. More and more plant based folks are talking about protein. I think I’ll take a look too.

Debbie, I loved your video! I, too, have added more protein to my diet recently. What I find difficult is keeping my carbs lower (I am a type 2 diabetic). Do you have any advice on balancing it all? Maybe the subject of an upcoming video??? Please!!!??? Lol Keep making these awesome videos!😊

Diabetes is not my area of expertise. I recommend you follow @masteringdiabetes. They are experts in the field. They are both diabetic and eat a low fat high carb diet with great success.

I like them on occasion. They are high on sodium and contain some oil. I use her soups when I don't feel like cooking. I think they are good transition foods until you can get more whole foods

Thank you for this great protein information, Debi. I've also started adding more protein into my daily diet as well - for a lot of the same reasons you have stated. I'm just starting on this journey of adding more protein and have started by making a breakfast smoothie using the Earth Chimp protein powder. I would love to see a "What I eat in a Day" to get in those 100g of protein. I also follow "Plant Based Dads" and they're doing the same - adding more protein and they use Chronometer. I'm going to set up an account there too. Thanks so much! Debbie in WA Ü

Thanks Debbie, I did a What I eat in a day in my last video. I follow plant based dads too and love them. We both have seemed to come to the same conclusion about protein about the same time. So weird. p.s. love Earth Chimp

More protein, I’m a 68 year old woman on a WFPB diet for about 10 years, and I can tell I’ve lost muscle tissue. I just saw those tofu skins at Trader Joe’s, I almost bought them but wasn’t sure what to do with them, then I thought of a pasta replacement, cut them in strips and add sauce like a pasta dish? Before I was plant based I’d make a big egg white omelet and cut it into strips for a low fat, high protein pasta replacement. I’m going to see if the tofu skins will be similar.
@ChewonVegan10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! You can cut the sheets into strips for a pasta replacement. You can also use them to make egg rolls which is what I am going to do. Video coming soon!
