My 1st Impressions of the Final Shape after 24 Hours... Early signs are VERY promising.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape has just released and after 24 hours my 1st impression of this campaign is actually pretty good. It is too early to judge the expansion and its narrative and lore in its entirety, but the expansion clearly has a lot of heart and the Final Shape's story through the campaign has been a good one. However, we need to be able to hold off and wait to judge until the Raid is complete and the post campaign questing has been resolved.

Bungie went and accidentally created the most complex, intriguing, and well written character they've ever created, on par with master chief imo. I really like the idea that our early encounters with the Witness like being given Stasis might have been the dissenters whispering in the Witness's ear to try and help us destroy them. Its really interesting how it recontexualizes all those previous interactions.

Part of me really wants Bungie to do something lore/campaign-wise with The Nine, but also, i think a big part of the appeal towards the Nine is their mystery and I'm afraid of that wonder being stripped away, if we did get definitive answers. But a lil cameo or special interaction between the Nine and the Gardener would be pretty awesome

I feel that a good compromise for that plot line would be exploring their creations and actions, ultimately leading up to a reveal, not of them proper, but their motivation or objective. That way they remain mysterious while still giving us some information on them.

One thing that needs to be said is how having Cayde back really breathed light and realness to the tone. It's similar to Drifter, but even better. They used Nathan perfectly, hitting the exact need for a one liner or bit of encouragement. His interaction with Crow, especially in the Wild Card mission, was really good, it made Crow feel more real. I hope they use him in Echoes

But one has to admit, you can't have the final fight with the witness be second fiddle to Oryx crawling on the outside of the Dreadnought or even Riven... not getting to fight the witness in raid form would be a major missed opportunity. By all means let non raiders finish it off, after most of the work gets done in the raid. But especially after that final cutscene... gotta get myself into that raid ASAP😝

Idk why Cayde and Crow are keeping the Wish a secret from the rest of the vanguard Fireteam. Zavala is hurting, and losing his faith; In the back of his mind He's thinking about how He Begged! the Traveler to bring his son back and was ignored, yet he accepted Cayde's death years ago, Moved on even. In his Eyes the Traveler is toying with him, playing a game of lives and deaths. I think it would do wonders for his mental state to Know that the Traveler didn't have 100% control over the situation, and it was only though Wish magic that any of this happened.

Well, as far I understood Final Shape (and remember Naruto) yes and no. Infinite Tsukuyomi traps people in an illusion of their perfect life. The Witness doesn't want to create an Illusion, instead he wants to manifest peoples perfect life into reality by using the light. Not that big of a difference, as both are essentially fake, but a difference it is. Also, the Final Shape would give the Witness ultimate paracausal control over the Universe. I'd guess that means that the Final Shape would truly be Final. Infinite Tsukuyomi isn't. It can be broken from outside and inside, though breaking out of it would require a Rinnegan iirc.

A certain popular KZbinr got to play the first 30 minutes of the Elden Ring dlc and put out a video about it. I clicked it, hoping to hear some vague first impressions of the game, thinking, 'Surely it would start with a spoiler warning,' but he immediately jumped into spoiler territory. About a month ago, a Destiny KZbinr was discussing a leaked image of the Cayde/Crow cutscene. He had a spoiler warning, BUT the thumbnail showed the leaked image. I took for granted how careful you are about preserving for your viewers the experience of seeing content for the first time in-game. I thought this was the norm, but I see now how awesome you are ❤

I think they actually did name drop the winnower in the campaign but I know the statues specifically said the gardener had been imprisoned and that we were setting the gardener free. On the other hand, we saw the Witness desperately claw at us with all kinds of bargains. It switched from belittling our love of loot as part of the infinite loop to straight-up offering loot as the primary reason to join. It's obviously quite happy to just say whatever it needs to manipulate someone into becoming a disciple.

Hey Byf! One thing i thought was interesting that you didn't mention is that the Gardener WAS mentioned in the campaign which I was stunned by. One of the Dissenter statutes we break during the Witness fight calls the Traveler "our Gardener" (or the Gardener? I can't remember which article they used). Either way, when i saw that I was like "oh man, THAT'S huge.

The campaign actually finishes after the raid, the raid just unlocks the final story mission then the rest is probably Xivu amd vex stuff via episodes but the witness will not be defeated in the raid but in Mission 8. The raid is probably going to be another disciple or another assault on the witness without killing him

Reminder btw that the Witness will 99% not die in the raid since we got one mission after it. My guess is that the Raid teams will cut its connection to the Traveler enough for us to bring in everyone and finish the fight in one last charge.

Spoiler Free Opinion: I beat the campaign on Legendary and it really REALLY puts respect on all the characters included, showing growth, compassion, and a sense of vulnerability amongst everyone that was never put on display until now. The traveller is rhe garderner, the veil is the winnower, as its shown to be the source of darkness as its what the witness used to become a collaboration of being, the witness isnt a god its just a huge culmination of life force and intelligence focused to a single point. Why does everyone always assume that the winnower would be no where near the traveller? They are both playing a game but it doesnt state they have to be apart

I posted this comment at Paul Tassi's reaction to TFS, but I thought it might be nice to share here: Bungie's meta-narrative in The Final Shape is impressive. The allusions to religion, philosophy, and Death (what is--and what lies beyond--the Veil/Vale) are so deftly woven into the storytelling without being didactic, but rather more like meditations on the subjects. I especially appreciated how our own experiences and memories of Destiny became both meaningful and useful in terms of our gameplay interactions and mechanics in the campaign. The idea of memories and memory being tied to the Darkness in Season of the Haunted, and in the Vow of the Disciple raid was a theme I was glad to see explored again in the companions' stories.

The Hive lucent wizard has a lot of lore behind her when she’s talking to crow about being the first drop of change. She also calls the traveler “ The Gardener.” So I do think the Winnower is the Witness.

the post campaign missions have direct name drops of the gardener and do give some good story details too, so make sure everyone that you do them.

Theres a very real chance of the Winnower actually being real and separate from the Witness. The new lore excerpt from The First Knife exotic ship found If you go to the Pale Heart Pathfinder badges tab basically confirms that the Witness regards itself as the first knife. Mara Sov says that "A knife is a tool, wielded by another's hand." The Winnower has a personality as seem by the "my man Oryx" comments and the "Majestic" statements that were in the Book of Sorrrows as well as Unveiling. In The Wager chapter of Unveiling lore book, the Winnower says this: "I am, by the only standard that matters or will ever matter, the winning team. Existence is a test that most will fail. Would you not count yourself among the victorious few? Don't hurry to deliver your answer. I'll come over and hear it myself." This leads me to believe that the Winnower will be a new entity that will be revealed to be the counterpart to the traveler who was referred to as the Gardener by one of the Dissenters in the final mission. The Winnower will not be the Veil (at least not completely) as the Veil stayed in the Sol system for the entire duration of Destiny's history after the Collapse. Also the Veil is supposedly a network similar to the Vex and is probably unlikely to use personal pronouns like "I"

Their cutscenes were 10/10 Forsaken is their best campaign til this day. The witness fight is also 10/10, hard af on legend, almost tore my hair out.

On a quick note in regards to characters that we did not know other than through lore tabs. Now some of these characters have gotten more of a spotlight in the campaign and after it which is pretty nice to see in regard to payoffs of knowing them prior.

The witness being referred to as “the first knife” put into perspective that the winower might actually be just the darkness, the dissenters are the ones who said that and called the traveler the gardener

I like how the story is meant to be played straight through with no activities being played in between, it adds a sense of urgency to stopping The Witness, like there’s no time for Crucible or going on strikes or anything else

Im pretty sure in the dissenter mission the first statue tells you that "the Gardener cannot help you and you must embrace the darkness". This is the closest i found in the campaign to mention of the Gardner/Winnower. I personally think the Winnower is a seperate entity that taught the Witnesses race how to perform the ritual and we will get it teased after the raid.

I honestly think the statues where extensions of the witness. Specifically the defiant pieces. It would explain why we always saw them and how we got stasis in beyond light under one. The defectors may have been helping us prepare since the beginning... cool if so.

One thing I wanted to mention is that throughout the campaign a recurring motif I kept hearing was Oneirophobia. Mostly the beginning corrupted pyramid ship horn, but also that taken ogre in the final mission had a weaker version of oneirophobia playing I swear

I do think that the sundance in caydes vision wasnt a dissenter, but the gardner. They mentioned us the guardians and the travler as someone they are all tied to.

In the cutscene when Cayde is talking with the entity showing themselves as his ghost Sundance, they speak of the traveler from an outside perspective. Not "I" or "me", but "your traveler". This leads me to think that whatever entity was behind this, may have been the theoretical Gardener. Or it could just be a choice of words and it is the traveler. Food for thought.
