Hey man, thanks for sharing this story. Everyone makes mistakes and I'm sure I'll make my own share of them once I finally become an RN. Like you said, what's important is that we learn from those mistakes. That's what makes a person good at what they do. Keep up the good work.

That’s why experienced nurses always suggest new grads start working from Med-surge unit first, then move to emergency or ICU. Experience in med-surge gives nurses a big relief when transferring to ER and ICU to work. Some new grads think working in ER is really cool and can build up your skills, maintaining knowledge…. So true, but the reality is that your skills are not there yet and you can achieve the same goal in any other units. It turns out that some new grads cannot wait to start working in ER or ICU right away. And ER is very famous for turnover and quitting because many nurses are not suitable for ER work but the job “being cool” attracts them at the first place. From med-surge units, you can practice so many things you don’t even know from ER, and they are very basic as every nurse should take on through the career. We can make many mistakes or near-misses. The most important thing to know is where you should start as a nurse. Just don’t rush and don’t listen to some nurses’ myths about ER and ICU. Start from basic and normal work flow.

Great story! That was very humbling and a good example of taking care of the priority. I’m sure this has happened to all nurses at some point. Thank you for sharing.

Omg Im so glad you spoke on this Kaynen, I think this is what's going to worry me the most, I'm almost finished with LPN school, and I find the priorities more stressful. I try to think about what would be first like of course airway and what I would deal with throughout which would be anything least important. But it's difficult to establish because Everything about the patient is important. Hate it's going to be another version of priorities once I'm on my own. Very helpful video!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm a nursing student right now and my greatest fear is making a mistake. The example of prioritizing your pt's colostomy bag over vitals and labs would make a great NCLEX question! Stool leaking out of a colostomy bag would be a hard one to put on the back burner if you don't have the experience to know better. Also, I'd like to point out that yelling is never best practice, even when someone makes a serious mistake - it does nothing to improve the situation, and it often makes things worse.

It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it. Thank you for sharing. You have become someone I look up to. I hope I can be as good as you when I start practicing.

yeah just grab some towels from the linen cart to put under the colostomy bag and keep it moving. comfort is not a priority in the ER. you can always clean up the patient after you get your assessments and labs done IF there's time but you want to ensure that you've done everything you can to give the patient the best chance of even making it to that point. however, i can understand why leaking stool would be hard to ignore

Mistakes happen! Not sure what the staffing was like at your facility but a tech should of noticed that pt wasn’t hooked up to the monitor and addressed it.

Thank you for sharing this, it isn't always easy to share mistakes, even with family and close friends, let alone complete strangers. :-) On the up side, you learned from it! Bet you've not done anything like that ever again! Personally I find myself falling back on my EMT training for triage and determining order of events.

This is a tough error and I understand your logic because it feels like a pressing issue if a person is dripping feces. You would have felt silly if you started labs and just ignored the leaking colostomy.
