It’s interesting, being in HVAC there’s a lot of facets, you learn ALOT about low voltage controls and all of that, how to solder and braze, and a whole lot of other stuff. I’ve noticed a bunch of guys I come across in HVAC also were electricians and/or plumbers before, or HVAC techs making the jump to plumbing, being a sparky, building operating engineer, or actual building cuz there’s no on call in that lol. Learn about generic controls, (big one) transformers, and low voltage theory, 3 phase stuff and it’s theory, plumbing, soldering and brazing, welding, don’t forget playing with puzzles or things that really challenge your thinking capabilities. If I can go back, I would have kept up with my puzzles and quick reacting video games. One big tip: keep your financials in check!!! You will make good money, keep it in control so you can retire, forward thinking and all that.

Im in my 2nd year working as an electrical apprentice for General Motors. Troubleshooting is the name of the game here. I don't dig trenches, and I don't work out in the elements, but there are some days that I am filthy head to toe after hopping out of a CNC machine. We deal with PLCs, VFDs, robotics, ladder logic, communications, and much more. The list seems endless. When i started, I thought that it would be more so what you have been experiencing as far as the type of work. It seems similar and different it many ways. Hey man, Im a high school senior and want some advice. I am thinking about either being an electrician and eventually start my own business or go to college and major in computer science. Not sure which one I want to really do. College would put me in to debt but I have a big chance of getting a high paying job after it. Being an electrician apprentice would let me earn money while I learn and save up money living with my parents and eventually moving out. What do you think would be a better route?
@TheApprenticeToJourneyman5 ай бұрын
Thanks for reaching out! Sounds like you have some big decisions to make.. Honestly I don’t see a problem with either one, if you go the college route I would try to do community college the first 2 years and possibly apply for scholarships to finish your last 2 years at a university while getting your degree to have as little debt as possible. Or you can go the apprentice route and maybe take a few online classes while you’re in your apprenticeship to still get your degree. If you feel like your parents are willing to work with you & you’re focused on what your doing I don’t think either one is a bad choice.. You Got This Brother!👍🏽
