My tip for new apprentices. If they are explaining directions to you, and you are not 100% certain what to do. ask them to show you visually. it helps so much the first year

Just completed my first week as an apprentice. Gotta say I embarrassed myself a lot. But I persisted and held my head up. A lot of time I was standing there watching, or handing tools and fetching materials. But overall a good week. I have all my hand tool I just need my drills. Which I will get at the end of this week. So being without a drill is well frustrating and degrading. But sometimes you just gotta tell yourself, my career is just starting, I can’t expect my start to be perfect. You can be prepared but not perfectly ready at times. Starting my second week at a new site. So now I have to start all over again making a fool of myself hahaha just taking it week by week though. WE GOT THIS APPRENTICES!!!

More so when your nearly 40 and nobody every taught you a darn thing all your life. How I was, everyone in my dysfunctional family growing up were doctors, lawyers, businessmen, professors, scientists. I'd only used a hammer a few times ever in my life, let alone pliers of any kind. I had forgotten nearly all of mathematics from my last year in college 15+years prior. I at least remembered ohms law, and some basic mental, plus fractions though. Never too old to become an apprentice or change career paths.

I'm in the IBEW as a groundman truck driver on the outdoor power line side. My first day literally consisted of picking up trash in the yard all day lmao. Which slowly progressed to me being placed on one of the line crews until I found the right fit with the right crew. It's all about who you work with and how well you fit in, I learned a lot in that first job.

My first day wasn't bad, thankfully its a jobsite that is only 12 minutes away so it made me feel a little less anxious knowing home was so close. My first day me and another first day apprentice just spent organizing the game box and the storage container we had outside. Got to familiarize our selves with tools and equipment. Did that for 2 weeks straight so do expect more grunt work than actual "electrician" work. That was back in April, I still work there met a lot of great people, and honestly no one I would say I dislike. Something I do dislike about the company itself is that you wont always be with a journeyman, in fact I am only with a journeyman 30% of the time. Every other job I've done its been by my self or another apprentice or CW. Outside of that im loving this career.

My first day was mercy, second day was hell. I come from a background of mostly learned, and I didn't like school yet I have no experience or skill at all. Barely able to clean with the broom. First day was the digging of ditches and break the walls, then the second day was the montage of copex and cables walking up and down the stairs on a multiple floor house even though I had fear of stairs. It was horrifying. Got used to it in these last few weeks.

Hey, I put your comment into AI. This was the advice it gave lol. Living off of an apprenticeship pay in a city can be challenging, but it is certainly possible with some careful planning. Here are some tips to help you manage your finances: Budgeting: Create a detailed budget that outlines all of your expenses including rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, and any other necessary costs. Be sure to also allocate funds for savings and emergencies. Roommates: Consider finding a roommate to share living expenses such as rent and utilities. This can significantly reduce the financial burden on you while providing companionship. Part-time job: If feasible with your schedule as an apprentice, consider taking up a part-time weekend job to supplement your income. Public Transportation or Cycling: Utilize public transportation or cycling instead of owning and maintaining a car if possible; this could save significant money on gas and parking fees. 5.Cook at Home : Preparing meals at home rather than eating out will help cut down food costs considerably 6.Seek Financial Assistance Programs : Look into government assistance programs available for individuals pursuing apprenticeships which may provide additional support during this time. By carefully managing your expenses through budgeting effectively , seeking cost-saving opportunities like having roommates cooking more often at home etc.,you should be able live comfortably within the means provided by an apprenticeship salary in the city.
