If only there were a reason why the prices haven’t come down. Oh. There is. Low adoption rate. Folding phones only sell enough to justify a new model every year, but not in the quantity to bring costs down. Because the prices stay high, the average phone owner won’t justify the spend and because they won’t the prices don’t budge

(Plus the Open doesn't have that weird chunk of no-screen phone next to the hinge) And the better inner screen with the anti-reflective coating and *muuuch* flatter hinge crease, which is unchanged even after a year of use. Why do people keep mentioning the honor V3? the only reason that thing is so thin is cuz the processor is half as good and the phone itself can't do as much, as smoothly as the pixel, you also get stock Android actual infrastructure in Western countries like Canada where I live, meaning proper customer care and replacements /repairs readily available Also good luck getting a case for that thing in any storefronts in Canada or the US. This is a classic debate that we seem to have every year. Yes, the Chinese , Taiwanese and Korean manufacturers will often have insanely faster charging, sometimes better hardware and specific points, but will always lack in terms of customer service and infrastructure as well a clean optimized ecosystem which I will always opt for over super duper ultra mega supreme charging speeds and unnecessarily thin designs

The rest of the time you will inevitably end up using it folded. The nice thing about the Pixel Fold is that they thought about this when designing it and gave you an actually usable outside screen unlike the Z Folds of yester years. I spent a lot of time working with mine, editing spreadsheets and using applications where a larger than normal screen just makes the experience better. I currently work as a rideshare driver and the amount of screen real estate a folding device gives you is just fantastic. I used to hear about drivers running iPad Minis with LTE connections to accomplish the same thing and to not have to worry about bringing a second device along is a game changer.

I recently upgraded from a Fold 3 to a Fold 6, since T-Mobile was offering me $1,100 USD tradein on my 3 that I had paid off. I don't know what the 5 was like, but the 6 is a significantly better design than the 3 or 4 were. The thing just feels more solidly built, though some of that may be just because its new. It's a bit wider when closed, so you aren't occasionally handicapped with what you can do without unfolding it like the 3, but it's also significantly thinner overall and especially when closed, so it isn't any harder to hold. For me, the best benefit (among several) of the foldable is the big screen making a much better device for reading things (novels or comic books, for example. I will never go back to a non-foldable if I can avoid it. It's so much money, but I do get so much benefit out of it, so the math kinda balances out for me. It's the same when it comes to the other drawbacks of foldable devices.

Now days I'm a sucker for foldables too and starting with the Z Flip 3 in 2021 I broke my own rule and spent 650$ on it on release. After that I went to use a Duo 1 I bought for 400$ new. Now I wanted to get a Fold 6 but that price was just too much for me. Gladly I was able to get a new last gen Fold 5 for "just" 950$ 3 weeks ago just after the Fold 6 release and I absolutely love it. The price still hurts in my wallet.

Well, I have been working in T-Mobile in NYC, for the past 10 years, and I have seen all of the foldable devices starting with all the models of Samsung Z fold and Z flip, and ending with Google Fold. One thing i should say, that i like to point out to people all the time is that whenever something is UNIVERSAL, it ends up doing everything sure, but it doesn't really excell at anything at all. Sure the foldable phones are cool, but at 1900+ US dollars you are NOT getting the best camera, built in stylus, IP68 water and dust resistance, a durable screen that can actually survive 6 years of use, and many more features. So whenever people ask me what should they get a Z fold or a S24 Ultra, i always recommend them to get S24 Ultra, and, if they need to, a tablet like a Galaxy Tab S9 FE. You get THE BEST camera phone on the market with all the latest things, you also get a media BEAST in S9 FE as a tablet, videos aren't going to be cropped and you can multitask all day long with 10000 MAH battery, and you still have 50$ left to spare to buy a case.

The camera bump should count on phones thickness measurements. Makes no sense to ignore a part that is permanently attached to it.
